Any thunder forecast for this evening ? Clouds out there around Athlone are looking really convective-y.

    -edit-

Just started to lash....you could kinda tell it had been building for about an hour or so....

Torrents of rain in Naas with Lightning

Looks like that shower is intensifying as it heads towards Dublin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,203 ✭✭✭PukkaStukka

Drove back from Skerries to Donabate in torrential rain with about 8 flashes from a truly apocalyptic looking sky. But the storm has now moved out over the sea and the lightning seems to have died with it. :(

Met ie didn't forecast that, it;s since updated (19:37) with a risk of Thunder, obvious when it's on top of you!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,695 ✭✭✭Darwin

We had that front over us (Laois) about an hour ago, just heavy showers, nothing torrential. It has intensified quite a bit since then!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,248 ✭✭✭pad199207

Close to30mm has fallen from that now my back garden is flooded and the street outside has water coming up from the manholes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,419 ✭✭✭Trebor176

My sister in Naas described the thunder and lightning as mental. It's lashing now in Clondalkin, but I reckon that's about all we'll get.

28 miles south of Naas, not fair !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 246 ✭✭notuslimited

Here in Naas. That was the heaviest rain I can recall in my lifetime. Absolutely chucking it down and fork lighting to boot. Was collecting my son and 2 friends from K Leisure. All three were in awe. The words apocalypse, end of the world, Noah"s Ark, Cats and Dogs all got a mention.

People do have short memories when it comes to the weather though. I can remember some super thunderstorms in the 1980's we've never experienced anything like it since.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,419 ✭✭✭Trebor176

I think I heard a distant rumble in Clondalkin.

I remember the one we had one night in the 80's. Some light show at night but with explosions not rumbles lol, wonder why we only get them the odd time

Was in Naas from 7:45pm yesterday. Was busy unfortunately otherwise would have taken a video because the rain and lightning was fierce. I'm just back from Thailand And what I seen in Naas was on a par at times with some monsoon weather I experienced whilst there.
Anyone got a radar screen shot from the time at happened?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,248 ✭✭✭pad199207

Certainly was. 31mm in 30 mins is nothing to be sniffed at! Hence the flooding.
Lightning was very impressive. Damaging the Harbour Plaza Downtown.

Just saw the damage the lightening did to the harbour in naas. Can't post photo but it's very impressive but scary also. Luckily it did not happen earlier in the day as it's quite a busy area for pedestrians

Got caught on the M7 during that last night. Wipers on full speed didn't help so pulled off at Newbridge exit to wait it out. Waited about 5 minutes after it stopped to get back on motorway, but ended up catching up with the rain again at Naas. Must have been a fairly slow moving system. Do a lot of driving and have drove in some awful conditions, but last night was definately the worst in terms of rainfall. Have to say though, bad as it was the fork lightning was amazing. Almost worth the hassle just for that.

Some photos of yesterday's drama in Naas. The last picture is where the lightning hit the harbour plaza.

Excellent stuff and all just 28 miles away, bloody typical !!!

It's really amazing how these tiny storms can be so localised !

The series of low pressure systems stalling just West of us next week could bring some fireworks to coastal areas, still quite far away for any specifics and might not happen but the GFS has been fairly consistent with the risk over the last few runs. Obviously the charts for later on in the week are much less likely to come off, but would be somewhat confident about Wednesday's potential for some heavy showers and thunderstorms. With the way the winds are off the low, Southern and Eastern coasts could be in the firing line.

A nice squall line from mayo to waterford now appearing on nw radar. It's going in a NE direction. I wonder if anything convective will materialize from it.
