I got an eleaf istick about 2 months ago from the best shop ,just noticed this morning that it wont switch on ,seems excessively hot,and has a weird smell ,like nailpolish remover ,coming from it :confused::confused:.
Has anyone else experienced this with an Istick ?

Nope, haven't heard of that. That sounds like a possible leak or vent of the internal battery (the smell and over-heating would be indicative of that). Don't use it and store it outside the house.

Get in touch with the best shop too

    Which istick was it, 20w, 30w, 50w or 100w?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,154 ✭✭✭arrowloopboy

20w I think,i presume it should last longer than a couple of months,i've had ego twists last over a year:mad::mad::mad:.

Absolutely. Have my istick 30w since January and still going strong. Get in touch with bestshop, found them great to deal with.

Do not try and use the iStick anymore. Don't charge it and don't try to power it up. Batteries can and do smell of acetone when they start to leak, as Penny Tration suggested. Using it could cause it to leak fully or possibly go on fire.

Definitely get back on to the shop and try and get a replacement unit.

I've put it in a zip lock bag outside, and have emailed the best shop ,so i'll expect a reply tomorrow.
It was simply overheating too much to keep in my house ,I was afraid it may go on fire ,I wouldn't even attempt posting it back to the seller,so we'll see what they say.

Good stuff. Well done on thinking to not post it. Didn't even cross my mind. That could prove to be pretty nasty. Hopefully the shop are decent and sort something amicable out pretty quickly for you.

My iStick 50W is playing up too - seems to be a common problem. Shame, as it and the Nautilus mini tank have been the best setup I've had up until now.

If it is from one of the early batches that there was problems with then the vendor you bought it from should be able to get a replacement for you from eleaf
I have had 2 of them ( still have 1 ) and never a problem with them

I know this may sound obvious but is it anything to do with the tank or flooding ... I found not cleaning the tank often enough caused me a few problems with the Istick I was using the aspire nautilus when I started out

iSticks 50w devices have been exploding left right and center recently. This problem may also affect the 30w. I would keep it outside the house.

Also, have a google of "autofire istick" or "exploding istick".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

Yikes! Any recommendations for a decent replacement?

That was ages ago, with the first batch. 30w devices were never affected. Your post seems like scare-mongering.

Eoin, if you don't need such a long lasting battery, the Coolfire 4 is a nice wee mod. 2000mAh.

The evic vt is decent too, cant remember the battery capacity but it's similar to the 50w istick (which is 4400mAh) iirc.

Have an istick 30w myself since January and it is faultless.

Looking at getting this, reviews seem positive:

eVic VT 60w TC is 5000mAh according to the specs. :)

Well,i posted it back yesterday lads, which I wasn't overly happy about, but unless they got it back, faulty or not, their would be no replacement !

Sorry for hi-jacking your thread, arrowloopboy.

Went with an iStick 30W in the end, as I don't really need a big box to lug around. Hoping it lasts a bit longer anyway - as I said earlier, aside from the battery issues, it's the best set-up I've had in 4 years of vaping; the nautilus mini tank is just great.

Ill agree,i'm vaping 4 years ,and the istick/mini nautilis are a cracking combo.

You should be fine with the 30w. The 20 and 50 had lots of issues, but no batch of the 30w did, thankfully :)

    .

Plus it occasionally turns out to be some gobsh1te who plugged it into a charger that was unsuitable, and delivered far too much current to the battery. Or did some other silly thing you shouldn't do with a battery, like charging it on a bed or something.

Edit: not saying you did any of that OP, sometimes it's just a faulty unit :)

OT maybe but how often do you clean the tank? I'm using the I stick 30 and naughty mini, been maybe two months now (Love. It :))and I haven't really "cleaned" the tank as such. I do notice the tank gets hotter when it's time to replace the coil, and whenever I refill it I give everything a wipe with tissue...how often would you advise me to actually take everything apart and wash it?

When I first bought one, I was told not to wash it too often, because it weakens it or something. I take it all apart and scrub it with tissue and cotton buds every day, wash it in warm water about once a month, if even that

    EVERY DAY ,that seems a tad ocd:P.

I change the flavour I use every day, usually more than once a day, that's why I clean it out frequently :)

The only thing I wash at every fill is the base, unscrew coil, leave air flow open & put it under a fast running tap to clear out the juice in the air holes,a quick wipe & it's ready to go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 792 ✭✭✭Didihno

Once a week I'll scald out my tanks (well, hot running tap water, as hot as I can manage to hold), usually once a week anyway.
Drip tips you should really clean more often, germs and lip gunk, especially on the steel ones.
I also have a jewelery cleaner, which I take out when tanks need a really deep clean.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,154 ✭✭✭arrowloopboy

Well lads,a brand new shiny istick arrived today from the best shop ,they said one of the chips was melted in the one I returned.
That's what I call service, well done the best shop ,you will continue to get all my vaping business ,they even wanted to refund me the price of the postage I spent on sending it up to them :):):),top class service !

Latest story of an exploded istick. From reddit today:

"So I woke up to what sounded like a gunshot and a small fire in my living room. My eleaf 50w exploded. Not sure of the cause but I've never tampered with anything on it. I'm not experienced enough to do any modding or whatever so its pretty much stock. Anyway I'm kinda freaked out about ecigs now. Idk whether to get a different brand and keep trying or just try to quit altogether. I don't really have a lot to spend but I was happy with it til it went nuclear. Any advice?"

Is it a natural instinct to remove the tank before charging? Were you born with this knowledge?

I charge mine with the tank attached all the time...but I'm using it, not asleep
    Also it's a 30w.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

The place I bought mine from was even saying how convenient it was to charge it while using it. I hardly think removing the tank seems like an obvious thing to do.

    Facepalm

Liquid containing device that's know to leak unexpectedly left connected to a mains charger unattended. Yeah sounds like a good idea alright, my bad.

Guy even had it lying on his carpet while charging. Sad :(

Charging it on a carpet is more obviously dangerous, as is heading off to bed and leaving it charging.

The tank/liquid didn't cause the problem.

I always only charge with tank off and the thing switched off if left unattended, it's common sense

I have a 20w eleaf and its about 6 months old.
Its getting pretty hot whilst charging and not holding its charge very well(having to charge it fully every day and I dont vape much at all).
    Is it humped?

Well it's normal for it to feel a bit warm while charging, which is one reason why you're supposed to leave it on a suitable surface and not on the bed or the carpet like the fella in the above link. Question is, is yours "warm" or "hot;" would you say it was too hot to hold in your hand for any length of time? It's hard to say about the holding its charge part; I have to charge my 30w once every 24 hours and I wouldn't say I was a heavy user, but it's subjective...

The main thing is, do you find that the battery is losing its charge more quickly than it used to? Assuming you haven't changed your Vaping habits or started Vaping more or less, did you always have to charge it once a day or did you use to get longer out of it?

are you using the original charger and cable that came with it or have you started using a phone charger.

There is a difference between them

My istick didn't come with a charger, just a cable, I thought that was standard?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,881 ✭✭✭dball

I think the standard phone charger plugs send out 1amp and a ecig charger send out .5 amps.
if you are using a laptop there should be no concern when charging but if you are using an electrical socket through a phone charger it might be over heating.

    open to correction

Anything 1A or under is fine to charge an istick with

I have been using my Samsung phone chargers for my istick 50 and ijust2 with no problems, doesn't get hot or anything

When it comes to chargers all you need to make sure of is that the voltage is correct and that the charger current is equal to or GREATER than that of which the device needs. The device will only draw what it needs.

    eg: Device is a 5v 500ma device.
You could safely use a 5v 2A charger on it.

Only time it gets dangerous is if the charger can't supply the correct current as this will greatly overheat the charger and the device.

eg: Device is a 5v 500ma device. Do not use, for argument sake, a 5v 300ma charger as this will overheat.

Its hotter than it used to be when charging that's for sure(I charge it on the kitchen worktop and never leave it charging when I'm not about).
I used to get about 3 days from a full charge without having to recharge. Now I'm charging it daily.
It has definitely affected my vaping as well(not getting the same "oomph" from it :))

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,580 ✭✭✭moleyv

Isticks are like any rechargeable battery, they can only take so many recharges before performance tails off. Maybe that has something to do with it.

That is the benefit of devices with removable batteries.

Personally I don't think a performance drop like that when it's only 6 months old is normal, I'd get in touch with the vendor if I were you.

Possible stupid suggestion, but there isn't any juice in the 510 connector on top is there? Might be causing it to act the maggot.
