Nice article in the Irish Independent on Shairoze Akram.

Not the first Roscommon man to play football for Mayo & 3 or 4 of Mayo's hurling panel are Rossies.

Never understood why Ballaghadereen play in Mayo (btw I'm not a Rossie myself)

If they're wearing Mayo jerseys then they can't be Rossies. Administrative and sporting boundaries don't always match. A quick Internet search will explain the reasons but, in short, Ballaghadereen was part of Mayo long before it ever had any connection to Roscommon.

Yes there's a very simple explanation,Ballaghadereen was historically part of Mayo and I will continue to welcome my Ballaghadereen brethren with open arms.

Report on the challenge match from CT:

Who do people think will end up in goals for the championship?

I'd go with Clarke but I'd say Rochford will pick Hennelly, as he's been first choice during the league.

32 is a smaller squad size than last year. Nobody has retired and there are a load of under 21s to fit in so there are going to be some disappointed players this week. To be honest there are at least four or five in there who have been making up the numbers without any sign of them breaking through over the last few years. Now that there's a load of quality younger players to be fitted in they are likely to be squeezed out. Given the age profile of a couple of them, it might be the last time we see some of them at county level.

You know what would be great? In a couple of years, Mayo & Roscommon meeting in a couple of All Ireland finals. Let's make a deal now. We have the first one, you can have the second. ....:)

I think any sane person in either county would bite your hand off if that was offered!

Interesting that Mickey Conroy got a run, thought his days were over, maybe not, could be a decent impact sub if required.

I'm telling you, he's worth a couple of points off the bench . Well he was two years ago

I'd say the Rossies will win one before Mayo😆

Would love to see him get more of a run out, and agree he's a great impact sub.

Tough call but I understand the reasoning behind the cuts. Conroy has put in some good performances in the past but the injuries have made him unreliable. The Mitchels lads were always going to be fighting for places after being away for the majority of the league campaign only for their club championship to culminate in disaster. They might be able to fight their way back in in the future though, you never know.

You would imagine it's probably the end of Conroy's intercounty career.

I'd say so alright. I'd say he gave these guys a year.
Not surprised with the likes of Kirby, they probably need a decent break, might be exactly what they needed

Ronaldson and Sweeney might not agree I would think.

Have they less to offer than Dillon or dare I say Andy?

Tbh, given Alan Dillon and Andy Moran's status within Mayo football, they were never going to be pushed out. They'll be allowed to walk away themselves. I highly doubt they'll play on after this year anyway.

Never pleasant but I think Stephen Rochford has got all the calls correct here.

Yes they've less to offer imo. None of the 4 will be getting lots of game time but Dillon and especially Andy will offer a lot more to the squad in general. If he's bringing in 6 of the u21's, then those two are good senior players to have there and leaves a nice blend.

Can't argue with any of the calls. It'll be interesting to see if any of the u21's push on.

Well that ain't going to happen.
He had a bit of a revival under Horan in 2012 but injury set him back again after that.

What do lads think of what Moran and Dillon will add to the team this year? Personally they hold a lot of experience and maturity BUT I do think they are past it, harsh as it might sound after all they've given us, but neither will get a starting berth so "could" be taking the place of younger players who could gain so much from been involved.

Just curious as to what other lads think.

Had this discussion in ennis actually with my friend
I'd keep just one not both
And it would prob be Andy .Think he can Make more of an impact off the bench than Dillon now and is obviously bigger/more physical . I think he could have a role to play this summer off the bench. Don't think Dillon has to be honest BUT maybe management and himself are happy to keep him training away with panel but not make match day panel ?
As for Conroy I don't think he has made much of a positive impact off the bench over the last few years bar one game .
He put up a nice tweet earlier saying it was the end of an era and he has met some great people etc
So I'd say that's that for him .

I think Conroy should have been given one last chance, when he was on his game he was a handful for any defender. He done well against Kerry, in Limerick, when coming off the bench. He could have been a very decent option against tired backs. I don't have any complaints with the Castlebar lads, if they had won the All-Ireland and a few players had turned in big performances on the day, then things could have been very different. You could definitely argue cases for Ronaldson and Mikey Sweeney, both talented footballers. I think what it came down to was their size and the fact that the likes of Regan and Loftus have come through. It will be very interesting to see what line up Rochford goes with when it comes down to business.
Alan Dillion is fair comment, but he won't be starting, he could easily give a good last quarter and think of the experience he brings to the rest of the panel. I also think it is mad that posters are questioning Andy Moran's place in the panel. Think back to the impact he made coming off the bench against Roscommon in '14 when we were on the ropes, he turned it around for us. He kicked the equalising point against Dublin in last year's semi-final to force a replay. He made Cillian O'Connors goal in that replay and offered us something different, he couldn't have done much more. Andy still has a part to play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,155 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Ya, I agree, Andy is still well worth his place. It's hard to know with Alan - we haven't seen enough of him recently to judge. However, it would have been a massive story if he had been cut and not what we needed heading into championship.

What you're really looking for is players who can come on with 15 or 20 minutes left and make a big impact. Conroy and Sweeney have both been given this chance in the past in big games and didn't take it. Andy has come off the bench a few times in recent years and almost always makes a big impact. Sometimes it comes down to small margins in big games - if Sweeney had dummied his man and kicked the winning point against Dublin in the drawn game last year the story could have been very different for him.

It's a squad that they're picking. I wouldn't be concerned with the minutes they'll play on the pitch but rather the input they'll have over the next few months on the rest of the squad.
Alan and Andy will have a big role to play off the pitch. 6 new young faces will benefit from having the two of them around.

I still think both could do a decent job as subs but I think the real value is having them around outside of that.

Mayo GAA can confirm that Ballintubber GAA's Cillian O'Connor will be the Mayo Senior Football team captain for 2016. Mayo open their Connacht GAA campaign away to London on May 29th.

    Delighted for Cillian.
