I think we're all, "I'll believe it when I see it" at this point.

Maq won't be back until the forum works again for them.
I assume it's possibly similar for the other two too.

Iancar is still here, he's just busy getting his snow gear ready for the weekend! :D

Possibly because there wont be any snow anywhere except on top of mountains where nobody lives.

Any time there seems to be any sign of hope it flattens just as we get our hopes up.

    This
There won't be any snow where it hasnt snowed to date
The latest bbc forecast restricts the snow graphics to central wicklow (ie the mtns) and mid Wales
I wouldn't rule out a slightly better outcome than that though but nothing exciting
The following on -7 850 air means cold rain showers in the north easterly too in populated areas of the east

Is the lack of a separate thread for the weekend due to the fact that no one wants to curse it?? ;)

    Or lack of confidence?

Ah, I remember the old days, and any sniff of the white stuff, 90% of boards users were on the weather forum at any one time*

    *may be a slight exaggeration

because each week nothing happens but various weather reports claim snow could be a distinct possibility next week and next week happens and nothing Then another weather report claims snow and by then we are in june

Take note of where the possibility is :P
Most of the possibilities have been Ulster, almost nothing for Dublin.

This morning was beautiful yesterday was beautiful I love this cold snappy weather. It's so much nicer than the balmy monsoon winter we had on and off.

    Yayyy tomorrow will be cold.

That's it I'm happy, simple soul me.

Glad it's still winter and hopeful for the next few weeks.

Ireland is mostly known for its non-extreme weather but the months since November have been very remarkable.

    November:
    - 3 named storms
    - Unseasonably warm days 1st & 2nd. Unseasonably warm night 9th / 10th
    - One of the wettest on record

December - well there is no argument in saying that it is one of the most remarkable months ever, weather wise:
    - 3 named storms
    - Unseasonably warm days AND nights 16th-19th
    - Warmest on record
    - Wettest on record (wettest month in parts also with Cork Airport in particular)
    - One of the dullest on record

    January:
    - 1 named storm & 1 nor'easter
    - Unseasonably warm days AND nights 24th-25th
    - One of the wettest on record

I guess this is what we get for the unremarkable poor Spring, Summer and early Autumn.

A quick look at upper temps for the weekend gives me no optimism at all. Its not unheard of to have frontal snow with -3s or -4s but i'd be a lot more confident if they were closer to -8. Still all is not lost with a few weeks to go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,203 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

Yes, so far this coming weekend is a waste of good potential, with a frontal slider you could get snow with -4 or -5 uppers (850 temps) but at the critical time it looks closer to -3. With an over-running south coast situation -6 might be adequate but there it's about -2 late Friday and now the moisture is taking a more southerly track too. With onshore streamer setups there you do need -8 to -10 uppers to overcome the surface warming effects of the Irish Sea, and we won't quite have that at any point either.

I would say that there could be some heavy snow on higher portions of the Wicklow and Dublin mountains and in one or two other elevated locations. We might get the odd report from people at higher elevations than most about snow mixing in at times. Or perhaps the setup will improve just before the fact and we will get a nice surprise. If the uppers were generally 2-3 deg cooler it might tip the balance.

But right now it just looks like cold sleety rain at times Friday to Sunday followed by a sharp frost for Monday morning then back to milder rain for a day (Tuesday) then more marginal mixups for another week after that.

I had to read this a few times to really take it in - it's been some dying scrag end of an autumn and a 4 season record breaking winter so far.

    Thks Sy.

We can stay optimistic, at least there is some chance of snow here, it's not like those days in December where it stayed above 10 degrees all night.

I'd a plan to head for Ticknock and Glencullen this Saturday and possibly forget about the rugby match. That plan looks set in stone now! :pac:

I'd go higher if I were you, head to Glenmalure lodge(via the M11),put the chains on your tyres there in the rain, then take the road to Aughavanagh, youll be glad of the chains 10 mins or so into that journey?

reading ur post sy its like wev broken all the records for miserableness.

    most dull december
    wettest yukiest month.
    windiest

unsleepable nights so mild you can listen to the rain batter off the windows in case you even wanted any sleep

wind bruises. whats a wind bruise?

a wind bruise is when you open your car door and while your getting in the wind slams it shut on your arm causing a wind bruise

    puddle floods
puddle floods are what used to be a puddle is always there now as a permanent feature as it never is dry enough for 2 days... until the 40th day of 2016 of course.

    finallly watery pockets

you may think these are pockets of rain falling in isolated spots from day to day ...but theyr not. they are EVERY day putting on your coat only to find there is water in the pockets as you walk to work in the warmest wettest windest winter

This dul wet winter isn't great for people prone to depression.
The lack of sunshine is cracking some people up.

Well I'm hoping the cooley mountains will get a good plastering of snow as I'm heading that way on Saturday morning. Pics to follow ;)

Likewise I also find the dull wet winter is preferable among some people prone to depression, and then they absolutely hate the sunny summer days.

    Personally, I like both :P

    BBC say:

Friday - mostly dry and cold
Saturday - moderately wet in the south and cold again
Sunday - showers in places and very cold
Monday - cold, sunny and dry
    Tuesday - cloudy and cold
Wednesday - wet for a time then cloudy and cold

The rest of the period then is calling for cold and chilly weather with blustery showers and breezy conditions. There has been an exceptionally high absence of calm days this Winter...
