Thanks to the advice received, I've now booked a competency course, so first step is taken!

Just wanted to give an update on all the advice I was given here. Did competency course, fired lots of different guns, liked a few, didn't like others, put a deposit on one that hit my sweet spot of fitting me well, looking like it hadn't much done, and being cheap! Applied for licence (and have gotten LOADS of land permissions), and finally got a phone call today to say licence has been granted and letter will be in post today. Looking forward to picking up my gun and breaking some more clays. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice, especially Cass who all but filled out the application form for me!

Yes. Target shooting outside an authorised range is illegal under the firearms act.

Any idea what section that is Under? I'd like to read more about it.
