It's a Mario Paint reference. The game is full of them.

Watched a few minutes of that video. I knew that some elements of Super Mario Maker, like the fly-swatting mini-game, were call-backs to Mario Paint, but I had no idea of the extent of the influence of the earlier game on the new one! (I'd never had a chance to play Mario Paint myself.)

What I'd thought of as a "Wario Ware/Rhythm Heaven" sensibility has obviously been a part of Nintendo since long before the development of either of those games.

...Only thing I'm wondering now is why Mario Paint used a dog for the undo button :P

The face sound effect is another Mario Paint reference, it was one of the notes.

Far as I can remember his official name is Undo Dog and it's a pun on Underdog. Something like that.

Over a million levels created all ready according to Nintendo life. About 900000 of them have the words 'don't' 'anything' and 'press' in the title.

Haven't been too won over by what I've read or seen about this game yet. That might be a good thing considering my finances and time at the moment though!

How does the standard Nintendo built levels compare to say Rayman or Super Mario 3D World? I really don't fancy playing some custom built levels by randomers. Any ones I've seen just seem annoying and frustrating to play.

The built-by-Nintendo levels are, perversely, exactly the kind of thing you might expect us members of the public to be creating: recreations/remixes of classic Mario levels, courses designed around some gimmicky concept, short joke levels. Basically, nothing like you'd find in an official Rayman or Mario game. The Nintendo content is a bit more polished, thoughtful, and user-friendly than the stuff "randomers" are making, but I think your princess might be in another castle, johnpatrick81.

(I should say, though, that I'm having lots of fun with Super Mario Maker. The level creator, the sample courses, the user-created stuff — it's all great crack, and if you get a chance to mess about with the game, do! — you might be surprised how quickly you find yourself enjoying it.)

Out of interest do the rest of you find yourself playing the levels using the stick or the d.pad? I would love to play using the snes pad tbh though I find myself playing with the stick on the wifi u controller.

Havn't really played about much with the level creator though my wee girl seems to like it and her levels are impossible already.

She actually had to explain to me why or where so many spikes were raining down from. It seems that a lot of online creators are using the same template. I don't really appreciate this.

D-pad personally, I'm old school. Been playing Mario side-scrollers for 23 years! :D

Another vote for d pads I finds its more responsive, it's probably the only game I use it in and again I'm a 33 year old who grew up with a nes/snes etc.

D pad for me too, been playing Mario (via friends NES, Arcade Mario and our family SNES) for 28/29 years!!! :o

I nearly always prefer the d-pad no matter what the game. It feels more comfortable for me.

D pad for me also, i find it easier to control mario with it, rather than the stick.

So is this game actually worth the price? I get the feeling that you wade through some mediocre levels in hope of finding a decent one. Essentially are we relying on our non-developer brains to create levels as enjoyable as Nintendo's own?

100% d-pad for 2D Mario. I have one of these too which Mario Maker is perfect for!

I've put 35 hours into it in five days. And I've barely even touched 100 Mario Challenge.

Either I'm making much harder levels than I think I am or some people are really bad at Mario.

I'll have a crack at a few now!

One down! And yes it was pretty tough, although not ridiculously tough.

It still kind of blows my mind that I can lie here in bed creating my own Mario level and it's so simple and easy and fun to do. Not to mention how quick it all is. There's pretty much no load times during creation at all - dipping in and out of create mode and dragging and dropping stuff is just so fluid. From a design standpoint the UI in this game is just mindbogglingly good.

Yep, totally agree. It's fantastic. There's so much room for expansion, have found myself wanting a few different things on occasion. I really hope Nintendo release more DLC and that was there plan all along. That maybe they wanted not to swamp beginners too much and give it some more publicity in the run-up to Christmas.

    Completely agree on that also.

I've unlocked every element in Super Mario Maker and there are still a load of things missing!

The giant mushroom which allows Mario to be a giant for a short while like the Star
(New Super Mario Bros DS) World 2-3 background style
No slopes if ya know what I mean

This is all I can think of right now

I reckon (hope) that like with Splatoon we will get new stuff via DLC and hopefully free

How do you make the giant enemies?

    Stick a mushroom on them.

You can stick a mushroom on nearly anything. Even Bowser.

No but if you put a Cheep-Cheep in lava it sets it on fire and becomes infinitely more terrifying.

A snes type controller that works on the wii u????

What witchcraft is this? Where can I get one of these bad boys and how many gold coins would such a thing cost. I loved the snes controller. Best ever imo. A thing of timeless beauty and sophistication. No one puts a snes controller in the corner. (Thanks dirty dancing) Lol.

Also is it wireless??? Or how does it work?????

Another thing they could add is a Desert setting. Anymore you could think of?

Yeah, with Mario Maker now becoming Nintendo's tentpole Christmas release, I'd be surprised if we got nothing between now and the end of the year. They've already announced a new costume for Japan (the Famitsu mascot which probably won't make it over here) so they clearly are open to post release content (not to mention pretty much all of their recent major releases had DLC of some sort).
