4 weeks away on Friday, so time for a dedicated thread. :)

New trailer today. A lot of recycled content from previous trailers, but the one new tidbit is that content is unlocked daily for the first few weeks (so as to not overwhelm when you're starting off).

Custom sound effects too (which have the potential to be awful).

The sound effects equally have potential to create something really cool with people who know what they are doing. The more I see of the game the more I want it! Also they've confirmed Sonic, Mega Man and Pac Man are compatible with it which is cool!

    Course Worlds, excellentttt

I don't think I've been quite as excited for a game in a long while. Bring it on!

So anyone got any ideas for this yet? I have at least one idea to annoy people.

How can levels be shared? Like are there codes that can be posted here so we can torture each other?

    Fun times ahead!

All the costumes have their own sound effects including death and victory jingles from their respective games. Kirby's victory theme for example:

    He couldn't inhale anyone!
    He didn't inflate and fly!
He didn't do a liddle dance at the end of the level!!!!

    I feel so cheated!

Don't forget. No matter how much it looks like Kirby, no matter how much it sounds like Kirby - it will always just be Mario in disguise trying to fool us all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,548 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Or maybe Kirby just has Mario's powers and limitations

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,677 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

No, MF is right, the red suited git is trying to fool us.
Kirby would never submit to such powerlessness, no way.

This is really cool, this guy more or less made a metroid level! Pity about the timer though.

I think this has sold me on mario maker now, I'd be useless at designing levels but when there're loads of people out there coming up with this sort of stuff it'll be class.

That's great level design. Very clever. Shame about the timer. :)

On the latest Wired podcast, they pretty much confirmed there will be a more robust music/sound editor added at a later date as DLC.

Don't know how reliable these guys are in terms of rumours like that though!

Good video, courtesy of Polygon, showing a 4 stage level design philosophy around a core concept. Even though it's based on 3D World, it's still a good design strategy for budding level creators. :)

Have just put in a pre-order with Amazon for the Amiibo bundle. Not too concerned about waiting a few days extra for the game.

But after awarding Devil's Third 8/9/8/8 can they be trusted to be impartial?

    More reviews!
    GoNintendo - No Score

Super Mario Maker will have you looking at the Mario universe in ways you never expected to. Whether you're looking to create or play, be prepared to lose a ton of free time to this experience. Super Mario Maker shows us that making Mario levels is just as fun as playing them...if not more!

    IGN - 9/10
Super Mario Maker is a great way to mark Mario’s 30th birthday, but it’s not concerned with being an overwrought history lesson. Instead, it’s a celebration that folds three decades of Mario into one accessible, powerful creation suite. The perpetual joke at the end of every 10 Mario Challenge run informing you that the Princess is in yet another castle hints at Super Mario Maker’s bigger promise: There will always be more levels to play thanks to the online creation community, and a virtually endless pool of challenges to overcome.
    Nintendo Life - 10/10

If you've ever enjoyed a 2D Mario game and have a creative, playful spirit, then you should have already decided to buy this. It has plenty of tough competition, but this is the definitive Wii U game.

    NintendoWorldReport - 8/10

Playing levels in Super Mario Maker definitely depends on the talents of the players making them, but creating and toying with levels is way more compelling than I could have ever expected. The limitations might be bothersome, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter because crafting your very own Mario levels makes for an incredible feeling, especially with how easy-to-use the interface is. Super Mario Maker is a supreme early leap into the world of game-making software for Nintendo, and I want to see them make more fascinating games like this, even if I can’t place a Charging Chuck on screen.

The reviews that are giving out that there's not enough things in there lose me instantly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

There is stuff missing, to be fair. I've heard it mentioned in a few podcasts.

Stuff like banzai bills, charging chucks, thwimps, slopes, triangle blocks and checkpoints.

A Super Mario 2 tile set would be cool too (turnips, vases, bombs, birdo!)

There is a lot of scope for add-on DLC at a later date. I guess they'll wait and see how the main game sells first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭Machismo Fan

I just think it's silly that there's 60 items to work with (more with the way the shaking mechanic works) that work across four art styles and some people aren't satisfied. Yeah it'd be cool if everything ever in a 2D Mario game were available here but if that were to be the case we wouldn't be getting this game next week with the amount of time that'd take.

It leaves plenty of scope for DLC and sequels, building on what looks like an absolutely superb base - but I really don't think that diminishes what is in this game whatsoever considering the number of options and combinations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Oh no argument here. I can't wait to get my hands on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭Machismo Fan

My favourite part of any review so far is this spot on line from Verge's review:
Building stages in Mario Maker is like learning a language when you already know most of the words.

I think there'll definitely be DLC and I'd say it'll be free. This game will have legs. And they'll tweak and change things as they gather feedback from the public.

I need to find a place to buy it. Missed out on a deal last week for €42 delivered because I farted about and it expired quicker than I expected.

That shmup Mario level was great, as was that Donkey Kong one.

Is anyone going to try there hand at stage creation? I've a few ideas floating around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,431 ✭✭✭MilesMorales1

I will, long as its easy and not faffing around stage creation. One of the reasons I ended up disliking little big planet is that the stage creation is an absolute hassle to use/

I just want talented people to make levels for me.
And I felt the same about LBP, every iteration felt like having to learn Photoshop CS6 in order to even appear competent as a level builder.
The actual platforming felt a little random as well, like Havok had a party and just filled in the physics model into a game as a joke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,548 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

I'd say the Super Mario 2 levels would be harder to do because it was so different to the other Marios. Be great to see though

    Doki Doki Panic Maker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭Machismo Fan

You can play Captain Toad for your turnip throwing Mario 2 fix!

Don't forget to share the code to your level here when you make it too so we can play each other's stuff. Also give people stars, because that's just a nice thing to do.

With the book but without the amiibo is £31.99 from Base. Seems like a good price.

It's cheaper to buy from Gameseek. It's just under €44 including delivery.

    It's €6.50+ cheaper.

A level design primer from Playtonic (ex. RARE) and Nintendo UK. Some inspiring ideas here, this is a really good video to watch.

    http://www.twitch.tv/nintendouk/v/14237264

Starts about the 9 minute mark.

Watch out for the DKC-inspired level (complete with DK Amiibo) :)

Very. Never had trouble with them.

For anyone who was planning on getting in Smyths with the Amiibo and waiting to see Argos, I saw one of their promotions catalogues today and it was listed as €62.99. Not on the argos site though. Strange thing was they had the game and book edition for €69.99

I think the non Amibo version will be enough for me, unless that €62.99 with it is correct, in which case I'll pick it up.
Not really in a preorder frame of mind, so I'll take my chances.
It's the art book that I'd like to have tbh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,431 ✭✭✭MilesMorales1

I'm hoping argos will have the standard version for 50 or below.

I'm hoping argos will have the standard version for 50 or below.

While it's not on their site, Argos have a videogame specific brochure out and Super Mario Maker is in there.
The Amiibo version is €69.99 and the art book only edition is a maddening €62.99, but they are giving away an exclusive poster with that, for some reason.
No sign of a version without either artbook or Amiibo, so good luck hunting.

They have also got Animal Crossing, without the adapter, for the N3DS for €55.99 and with the adapter, for the regular 3DS models, for €62.99, it might be worth the extra just to have a Nintendo stamped doodad.
The cards are confirmed at €5.49 per pack.

The 2 big things missing for me are the slopes and checkpoints. The suits and some of the abilities not there are strange too, especially the Tanooki suit. I didn't know it was missing, it's iconic. And the giant Mushroom would be cool. Finally, removing the clock should be an option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

    Love it!

Also missing are Larry, Morton, Wendy, Iggy, Roy, Lemmy and Ludwig von Koopa.

    SMB2 too... :)

I can't wait for smyths to take my money on Thursday night! This is goin to be epic!

If I could add anything to this game it would be the ability to play the created levels on 3ds. I'd say if they added that feature before release they would sell double the numbers at least.
