Seen this doing the round on a few gaming sites....bit scummy and makes ye kind of infuriated. Guy did the maths on For Honor unlocks etc

    https://www.reddit.com/r/forhonor/comments/5zuqis/logical_look_at_steel/

Ubisoft is notorious for their deceptively expensive multiplayer games as anyone who has played any of their recent Tom Clancy games could tell you. I personally have just suppressed the Completionist within me and stopped bothering to grind for unlocks. Once you do the math, you'll agree.

    The Facts
The average hero requires around 91500 steel to unlock all base games (no DLC/Update content) unlocks. This includes Emotes, Executions, Effects, Outfits, and Ornaments. From there, you multiply by 12 (for each hero) and get 1,098,000. That is approximately 7.32 of the $100 steel packs. So Ubisoft has valued their in-game unlocks within the base game at a $732 over-charge of the original $60-100 spent on the game.

    The Grind
If you're a casual player with hope of unlocking everything in-game then just stop now. I'm serious, stop. Casual players who play 1-2 hours 5-7 days a week will never reach this goal. Completing Orders/half-Contracts will get you roughly 1000 Steel, another roughly 200 for the matches you played. So 1200 a day is a good estimated gain for casual players. That's 915 days. Roughly 2.51 years. So, I guess you could get all unlocks. Long after Ubisoft's popped out For Honor 2.
And for those who grind, the system doesn't repay effort. Because the game is designed to maximize Steel returns for play-time up too only the first 1-2 hours. The illusion of rapid gain. You see, because Orders/Contracts are dailies. Contracts in fact are only available every other day. So once you hit 1200 from 1-2 hours of casual, steel gain rates drop drastically. The other half of the contracts will net you 400 or so. So 1600, and the extra Steel from matches, so roughly 200 more. So a good 2-3 hours grind will get you 1800 steel. From there on out, let's assume you just play Duels, and gain around 20 Steel every 8 minutes. That's roughly 150 Steel an hour. Just straight grinding Duel matches with room for error (Long matches, short matches, loading screens, new lobbies). So, since it took, optimistically, 3 hours to grind the dailies, that puts you at 13 hours left in the day to grind (assuming you sleep at least 8 hours a night). So that's 1950 for the Duel grinding. That's 3750 a day if you just play back-to-back matches. Not bad right? Yes. It is. Because contracts aren't daily. They're only every other daily. So on the next day of play you'd get only 600 for Orders in about 30 minutes to and hour. Lets say an hour. And then 15 hours of steel grind. So 2250 from that. 2850 total. That's 3 days a week of 2850, and 4 days a week of 3750. So lets do this one weekly, and say you get 23550 a week from this intense grinding. That's still 46.62 weeks. Or more accurately 326.37 days. Just for all of the unlocks available upon the release of the game.

    Summary
Casual players would spend nearly 2.51 years trying to get all unlocks. And hardcore grind player's would need to spend close to 326.37 days. This equation ignores disconnects, down servers, and all DLC/Update content. So the new emotes, effects, ornaments, and future hero costs are not factored in. Meaning the grind for additional (non-base game content) would require far more time.

    Its hilariously ridiculous.

Firstly no one unlocks everything for every player in this game. People play with 1-2 characters max. I play with just one character because obviously the more you play as one character the more skilled you become as a fighter.

You can spend 1-2 weeks (Not even in game time) to have everything you need for your character. Roughly Prestige/Rep 3 is where its at. The vast majority of what they mention are cosmetic items.

There is 5 of us who play regularly who haven't spent a penny extra on the game and we are all max level gear score 108. Some of the guys have already maxed out their 2nd characters.

I am suprised how many people are getting upset by it. It makes no difference to me what fancy gear a guy is wearing as I slice their head off with an execution :D

That's fair enough not to expect to unlock everything....IF it was Free...like a MOBA game.
But this is a full price AAA title, it's also not like their forking out for servers or anything.
    It could have been F2P

    I don't get the point.

People seem to want to heap negativity on the game, even if that means working out the total time needed to complete something that holds no value or need to be completed. The game is completely playable without anywhere near (not even remotely close) that kind of time investment. It's also not a F2P game, why should it be? The items listed, in normal play (1-3 character mains) are well reachable without any extra spending.

Of course the game is playable without such an investment of time.

The point is I guess is that it's a full AAA title...how much was ultimate edition or collector's on release ? 80 or something ?
And it's made so that it's near IMPOSSIBLE to get 100% of the games items without spending a fortune.
I can't think of many if any other AAA titles that lock you out of in-game content or from the possibility of getting 100% of everything possible in the game. People are completionists these days and getting Platinum or unlocking everything is a big thing for many people.

You bring up the argument of maining only 2-3 characters, although that may be the case for a lot of people there are still others who like to chop and change and play all the characters available.

Also, the money that they are charging to unlock this content isn't being spent on improving the game or maintaining servers.

This isn't a Tomb raider game. It's not a completionist game. Its a fighting game where the more skilled you are with one fighter the better you will do. Also you can see all the items you are buying so you just pick the item you want and buy it using in-game earned currency. For example I just looked for the helmet ornament I wanted and bought it. I didn't have to unlock 20 ornaments before being able to do this. I can't wear 19 other ones on my head so you just buy the one you want to wear :D

People do not switch through a whole range of characters unless they have a death wish. Their rage would be hilarious.

They don't. This isn't street fighter. If they do they'll get destroyed. I've tried it a few times and instantly regretted my decision :D

You'd need to play the game to understand what a non issue this whole cosmetic item rubbish is. Its a shame because the devs will be delighted to see that people are whining about cosmetic items instead of connection quality.

We don't know where it goes. The game has a lot of content to come. It follows Rainbow 6 Siege content update structure.

It's a little like someone complaining about the time it takes to unlock every camouflage for every weapon in a COD game.....

    Like... Wut.

Anybody still playing this ? Is it worth it for a newbie to start now ? Or would I constantly get destoyed ?

You would get destroyed as the game is notorious for having no/broken matchmaking, so you would get matched versus players with hundreds of hours of experience. Not to mention the meta gameplay is very defense orientated so you wouldn't get a chance to actually "play" the game as all your attacks would be parried be the hardcore players that are still playing.

Its a shame as i really enjoyed my honeymoon period with the game but the balance changes just didn't come through and the game focused on being defensive if you wanted to win

Have you gone back? I love this game. Have been hooked since day 1 but the player base could always use a boost so any looking to come back should know a few things:

-Dedicated servers are live on all platforms
-Kensei, Conquer and Berserker all got re-worked, which is amazing
    -Shaman is still a cnut
-Parry changes happened. they no longer guarantee a guard break but a light parry will give a free heavy. This has made the combat more fluid and overall has been a great change.
-The original roster are all getting a rework in the coming months.

I really enjoy this game and I am hoping by reviving this thread more people come back.

Whoa, this is a great change. The main reason i quit the game was because the parry system was so overpowered and the defensive gameplay made the game boring and slow. But what took them so long to implement these changes? Seems like they put a skeleton crew on the game post release to take care of minor issue's and to roll out the DLC

Anyway. Might have to install it again and have another look

Ubisoft always seem to release their multiplayer games in an awful state, and very slowly improve them massively. The Division and Rainbow Six: Siege had this happen, so it wouldn't surprise me if it happens again.

So what's the story with this? It's part of PS plus in February so player base should jump next week. Is there a single player or just multiplayer? Worth giving a go?

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,407 ✭✭✭✭gimli2112

I'm sure there is a campaign. I'm not sure about it but you can be a Viking, samurai or knight so it's worth a download o check it out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,932 ✭✭✭YouSavedMyLife

The campaign is really really bad. Its a multiplayer game through and through with a tacked on singleplayer

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,190 ✭✭✭Rory28

I have been hooked on this since launch day and can't recommend it enough. It isn't a singleplayer game. It is at its best when playing against other people.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,893 ✭✭✭Canis Lupus

Can't say it hooked me personally. Looks pretty and is an interesting take on a fighting game but not my thing.

I bought this in a sale a few months back and think I played it for a couple of days before deleting. It's an interesting take on a fighting game (would liken it to a game of rock paper scissors really in that you need to block or attack in a direction opposite to your opponent, so lot's of stance watching and anticipating their next move), but I found it got boring very very quickly. Not to mention that some online players are so ridiculously good at the mechanics of the game now that it becomes an exercise in frustration.

It's worth a look on the PS Plus anyway if you haven't played it, just keep your expectations in check :D

This is what worries me about it. Nothing turns me off a game quicker than a steep learning curve and being decimated by those who have it since day 1. This game will have both. Downloading now, but really worried this will turn me off it.

Oh no. I suspect you are gonna have a bad time. I have been playing since day one and while I still get my ass handed to me I know what im doing. It is a great game and I can only hope you stick with it until you get the hang of the parrys/feints mindgames.

Its like a chess match at higher levels. Just waiting for that whiff or mistimed attack and then the sweet sweet payoff of winning a very close fight.
