We owe €60k a head, they owe €40k a head, we are borrowing more than we take in and the future looks like this will continue for decades, that would be a worse position in my view.

That's not how you judge an economy.

I could take out a loan on a 5 series for over a 100k, Mick next door gets a loan on a 20 year old Micra for €1000.

Who's in a better situation ? Me if I earn a couple of hundred thousand a year and can pay my loan off in 2 years while Mick is on the dole and is paying interest over 10 years.

This is great - two/three callers from foreign parts and Joe acting as some sort of co-ordinator in Dublin.
When he was a lad, playing with tin can and string telephones, he dreamed of this moment.
    Ain't technology wonderful?

Not good enough, people like Cowen, Bertie and Noonan are required now to run Greece.

That's cruel. Surely you would not inflict that on them. Haven't they got enough problems. Knowing Bertie he'll stand up and say "It's all Greek to me."

Hold on a minute - nobody held a gun to my head and forced me to take cheap loans. I was tempted, sure, but limited it to a van purchase, even though I was told I could have as much as I liked. I'm just so glad I resisted, as commonsense took hold of me (it had to happen, sooner or later). The point is, everybody who got themselves up to the chin - including countries - had the same ability to say no.
