Temperature is what matters when we are defining seasons.

    Says who?

Who cares what the rest of the world thinks? And what difference does it make when one season starts and another ends?

The seasons makes a great difference to the growers of food around the world.

    That's what we're discussing.

In Northern European countries and North America they have Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.

In tropical countries they don't have the four seasons. They may have a rainy season and a dry season or some other categorization.

In Ireland we really need our own system. We don't really have a summer with a reliable extended period of hot weather or a winter with snow. What we have is as sort of Autumn which extends to early March followed by a sort of Spring which extends to late September.

Maybe call these seasons Autumnish and Springlike.

I don't think so. But hopefully everyone will have a lovely summer anyway. :-)

Seriously, you think that seasons are not based on weather? So do we get snow in August which is Autumn according to you or heatwaves in February which is Spring , of course we don't.
Irish seasons are not based on weather. That doesn't mean the weather doesn't vary with season.

Basing it on the "stretch of the evening" is looking at the system the wrong way.
Not when the amount of work you could get done was dependent on the length of the day, it's not. Perfectly logical way of looking at it.

I also find it amazing that only people in Ireland think this way and apparently all other countries are wrong on this.
Who said all other countries are wrong?

Ireland can do things one way and other countries can do it another way. If everyone did things the same way, the world would be very dull.

Worth noting as well that the four major historic Irish festivals - Imbolc, Bealtaine, Lúghnasa and Samhain - all marked the start of the seasons. A theory as to why Christmas Day is the 25th December is because it took its date from an old pagan festival marking the passing of the half-way point of winter - from then on, the day would start to lengthen and the worst of the winter was over.

Yes it was the solstice when the calendar was out a few days.

I prefer to map weather to seasons. The nights may be drawing in in August but it's the warmest month. February is getting brighter but it's cold and bitter.

That's Metreological. Your arguments are astronomical but in science astronomical seasons start and end at the solstice.

    "Summer is a-coming in,
    Loud sing cuckoo.."

Still at it today and then they say.

"In June the cuckoo change his tune.."

Who really cares? It is all about the long days and late sunsets.

We had snow in March. Bloody awful in Spring!

The unpredictable weather here is a cause of much angst including me. We never know from day to day what our weather will be like.

The beauty of places like Southern Spain and France is, that no matter what it will always be fabulous weather in Summer every day. No wonder so many of us try to escape there!
