Ireland can do things one way and other countries can do it another way. If everyone did things the same way, the world would be very dull. Worth noting as well that the four major historic Irish festivals - Imbolc, Bealtaine, Lúghnasa and Samhain - all marked the start of the seasons. A theory as to why Christmas Day is the 25th December is because it took its date from an old pagan festival marking the passing of the half-way point of winter - from then on, the day would start to lengthen and the worst of the winter was over.
