In fairness it happens on trucks on a daily basis .Are you suggestingw e close off our boarders to all traffic or should we just learn from this and change our processes.

The reason for the mod intervention was to keep the topic on track concerning the new route. It was being derailed by negative comments about possible aslyum seekers.
Some commentators were expecting a flow of illegals. This is very unfortunate but still its 7 people out of approx 200 onboard.

Well done, you were right. Now we need the GNIB to put proper procedures in place to prevent future occurrences. Carrier liability, passport checks on the aircraft, documents faxed in advance, there are lots of ways to prevent this is the powers that be act promptly.

It's not xenophobic to call a spade a spade.
The inaugural flight resulted in 7 asylum seekers who somehow had zero ID or documents on presentation to GNIB

Now, kindly retract your pithy attempt to paint those with a logical and realistic understanding of reality as xenophobic
Did you really just argue with a mod in thread?

    I don't understand.
Are mods not allowed to participate in a discussion?

No probs with mods being part of a discussion. However the bold font indicates a "Mod post" rather than "a post from someone who happens to be a mod."

There is a charter that all members agree to regarding Mod instructions.

Well there have been two flights since - no mention of them in that article.

    Fair enough,
Although, I may be looking in the wrong place - but I can't see anything about posts in bold.

The bold font is the way a lot of mods indicate that it is a mod post. Some just put "Mod*" at either end of their post.

Just as a matter of interest how much would the airport make on a flight with 200 people on board

Well, I think we all agree that logical foresight is not xenophobia.

People were let off the plane to celebrate the inaugural flight
An investigation is now taking place after it emerged that a group of passengers on Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET50 didn’t head for the party at the gate that was planned to celebrate the new route last Saturday – instead going straight to immigration to claim refugee status.

I usually have no problem with your modding in A&A, but really, that kind of statement just comes across as a childish power trip.
Being a mod doesn't make you some kind of axe wielding dragon slayer.

And I'm not arguing with a Mod, just making a statement of fact.

We landed in Paris a few days ago, French immigration were at the end of the jetway checking passports, from what i understand, if they find someone without a visa before they get off the jetway then they cant claim asylum. If there is going to be an ongoing problem with the Ethiopian flights, then INIS must start to do the same thing, stop them before entry.

Couldn't do that here, the government wouldn't want to be seen as baddies, and the PC brigade will be giving out.

PC brigade will be giving out.
Are they going to pay the expenses for the asylum seekers?

Then its time to delay the flight and flush the toilets :):)

Right this is a mod post.
After my post night shift nap I have had a look over the whole thread.

I was the person who used the term "stereotypical xenophobia" in an instruction to keep the thread about the new route rather than the "logical foresight" of my friend.
I did not indeed to call you a xenophobe, calling a statement xeophobia was not meant to insult you. Therefore you have my apologies if you felt slighted. It was in hindsight too strong of a statement to make.

As for power trip. The fact that I didn't infract him/her for breach of charter shows that I am not on a power trip. I was slightly shocked that a poster would demand an apology over a mod instruction (I hadn't re-read the whole thread till this evening so didn't realise their side of it) I would have expected and responded to a PM about the insult.
If I really wanted to "wield my axe" I could edit my posts to cover my tracks, but that is not my style.

On a personal note, I too think it is disgraceful that this had happen on the inaugural flight. Embarrassing for ET, farcial for the GNIB.
Especially as comments about asylum seeking were all over any online articles about this route launch. The example of the French authorities about is a good set-up in my view.

What my friend took as me calling them a xenophobe was my attempt to prevent this boards.ie thread descending into the flamewar that happened elsewhere.

So again, apologies for any perceived insult to Ard Macha and my friend, the original mod instruction was meant as a guiding hand rather than an iron rod.

It is unfortunate that the initial negative thoughts have indeed come true. The route however is still a feather in the hat for DUB and that is the angle that the A&A forum mostly look from. Lets hope that this incident was not a percusor for the future

You're a big person. I apologise too for perhaps not taking the time to phrase my concerns over operations in a clear manner.

    Thanks

The fact that they didn't get the flight number right makes me wonder what else they didn't get right :pac: . Every morning 2 - 3 flights with ET 50_ come in. While they were definitely pushing it by letting the pax out, I definitely feel that the reaction has been over the top. Seven people claimed asylum, let's have those who are paid to investigate investigate, if there's reason for them to stay, let them. Don't just comment "SEND THEM ON THE NEXT PLANE BACK" (I'm looking at you, Irish Independent commenters). While this isn't the most on topic post, we've heard nothing about any flights since - that it was a one time event.

tl;dr - Build a bridge and get over it. 7 people claimed asylum, it wasn't a full blown invasion.

I would imagine those seeking asylum are more likely to come from connecting via AMS for instance.

    How does this work?
Where is the line drawn as to where Irish soil begins and ends, door of aircraft/end of jetway/other side of customs?

UKBF did this to a flight I was on - didn't see anyone stopped, although they did seem confused with a driving licence...
