A landing and a takeoff. Whatever it is, it’s nice to see them in Cork again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 Irishavgeek202

Apologies, yes exactly. Its take off and landing slots.
For Example Ryanair and Aer Lingus 4563 slots and 2626 slots respectively. Thats to cover the Winter season. Thats all the take off and landing slots they have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 215 ✭✭TheBrownBird32

Looking closer at the slot report, it seems EI were supposed to launch flights to CDG. There are 132 movements so that looks like it could have been 3 - 4 weekly flights.

EDIT: would have been on Thursday, Friday and Sundays this winter. I guess they saw AF start flying year round and changed their minds

Salzburg will be operated on the Neo for the first time this winter

I don't think there has been nearly enough route additions to expect 4 million in 2 years. There wasn't a significant increase in the number of seats between 24 and 25 but passenger growth will push 8% or 9% for the year. The current schedule must be close to being maxed out and there has been no significant addition for 26.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 215 ✭✭TheBrownBird32

Ryanair schedules so far make it seem there will be a 5th aircraft for S26, but we shall see

Casual browser of this thread, some great information. Thank you!

Just saw that the Derry to Dublin flight is being reinstated, I think this is government subsidized but it just got me thinking of the Cork to Belfast flight. I would love to see it come back, I wonder if this is something we might see in the near future?

I'm surprised the Cork-Belfast flight was never revived. They're a far enough distance away to justify it I think. I've never been, and I'd like to make the trip up some time.

I'm not sure that there's that much of a business case for that. The last time the route was operated, it was with a very sketchy setup, using chartered-in aircraft from an airline of dubious quality, and operating a Swearingen Metroliner, which wasn't the most comfortable of aircraft. It's been nicknamed the San Antonio Sewer Pipe for a reason…

I suppose it should be possible with something like either a small turboprop like the ATR 42 or an equally small regional jet like the ERJ 135/145, but once again, the question is economy. Passengers flying from Derry to Dublin can make use of Dublin as a transfer airport in addition to just going to Dublin, at least if Aer Lingus is to operate the flight. However, neither Cork nor Belfast are major transfer airports, so any airline operating the route will have to rely exclusively on people wanting to travel beyond the two cities.

Speaking of airlines, which airline would operate the route? I highly doubt that there's enough traffic volume to fill a 737 or A320, which means that any low-cost airlines are out of the picture. Aer Lingus doesn't give a toss about any Irish airport not called Dublin, so the likelihood of them committing one of Emerald Air's ATRs is close to zero. Loganair operates a couple of flights into Belfast City Airport, and they do operate aircraft in the size range that might just be enough to make a Cork-Belfast flight viable, but the question is whether they're willing to commit to that. Somehow, I doubt that, though I could be wrong.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

i drove to and from belfast a few times in the last few weeks and my god we need a flight. It’s an awfully long trip, its badly badly needed

    There's a handy Kerry - Dublin route, can't see why a Cork - Belfast route wouldn't work.

Given the distance and the need to transfer from Dublin Hueston to Dublin Connolly, I'd prefer a flight

Hi there, just curious what you mean here?

do you mean there will be a direct flight from Cork to Salzburg in Austria?

When will this be announced and how frequent do you think the flights will be?

    Thanks!

It's a winter ski charter. Runs every year. I don't think it's actually bookable for individuals, it's run purely for groups who booked through a travel agency as far as I can tell.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

It's OK outside of the Heuston-Connolly connection. That piece in the middle is the horrors.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,780 ✭✭✭hans aus dtschl

The agencies take up all the seats between them I believe yes. You can book yourself through them, but the costs are generally outrageous. I've been quoted stupid numbers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 215 ✭✭TheBrownBird32

They’re ski charters that could be booked on TopFlight. This is the first year that the 320neo will be put on the route

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,025 ✭✭✭revelman

I travelled to Salzburg on a number of occasions for very reasonable flight only prices eg 200 return. I used to be able to book the flights on the TUI website. But this no longer seems to be possible. Last time I went was 2 years ago.

I agree with this. I do that trip once or twice a year, usually by train. I would travel more often if there was a flight, or even a direct train service.

The Aer Arann Cork-Belfast service around 20 years ago was brilliant and I think that was a 42-seater.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,925 ✭✭✭lisasimpson

YEs I'm remember that aer arran service was v handy. Belfast has a lot more to offer for a short break now too since. It's a service I'd love to see back too. Be handy for concerts etc too as often irish concert dates are Dublin and Belfast. Not to mention the amount of people who come to live and work in Cork and want to explore the country while here

Yeah I was being quoted 1000 by Topflight this year. Might just have been the particular ones I was looking at. It looks from my casual outsider observations that there's a demand there.

Used it myself in about 2005 to play a rugby match for UCC against Queens. There's large employers here (Musgrave, Stryker...) that have decent staff numbers in or near Belfast as well and having them travel by car is punishing. The train unfortunately is an awful option given lack of infrastructure.

Does anyone know is the interim lounge now in use at Cork Airport. When i was there last month it was still the lounge in normal location

United airlines just announced Newark-Glasgow for summer 2026 to be operated by the 737-8 MAX…. I wonder if Cork may be considered by them in future years. I think the 737 aircraft could have a possible niche in regards to Cork- NY or BOS

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,583 ✭✭✭kub

That's the aircraft Norwegian used on their transatlantic service a few years ago.

I would like to think that those at the airport are chasing US carriers as it would seem, with the Aer Lingus fleet, they cannot operate that kind of route.

Im sure discussions have happened behind closed doors. Its probably not too difficult to get access to management of these large airlines being part of the larger DAA group.

United adding Newark to Glasgow is fascinating.

United seem to be really thinking outside the box in terms of more niche long haul routes. They recently added San Francisco-Adelaide for this summer (a smaller city with no direct US service with ever growing US links; sound familiar?) which came completely out of the blue.

    Something not to rule out.
