I am not entitled to a question, but when did that ever put me off, so

what was the origin of the phrase 'a wild-goose chase' ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 250 ✭✭ironwalk

    Shakespeare?

In Romeo and Juliet... Can't remember to be clearer than that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,741 ✭✭✭✭looksee

Yes Shakespeare used the phrase, possibly in print for the first time, I am not sure, but it was a phrase that had a specific origin, any ideas?

Ooh thought he had come up with it.
Not a clue so...presume it has nothing to do with wild geese and how far away they travel? :D

A 'wild goose chase' was a race in which horses followed a lead horse at a set distance, mimicking wild geese flying in formation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,741 ✭✭✭✭looksee

You have it Rube! I had not known the origins of that phrase until I came on it accidentally while looking for something else!

Name the only country whose president was an Olympic gold medallist.

You seem to have given up on this one. The answer is Hungary. Pál Schmitt, president 2010-2012, won the team épée gold medal at the 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics.

Wow! So they were actual, genuine, deserved medals, as opposed to "dictatorial" ones! Excellent!
