In 1945 Ethiopia was one of just four independent African countries. Name the other three.

H.G. Wells, because he only has initials. :D

Graham Greene was the only one that didn't write scifi type books. (I have no idea, guessing)

No. Nothing to do with names nor genre.

I was going to say that one of them didn't use a pseudonym, but I can't think which one it'd be. EDIT: I just read what you said about names, so, never mind.

Arthur Conan Doyle was knighted and he believed in ghosts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 30,287 ✭✭✭✭looksee

Was the belief in ghosts as a result of being knighted?

I think believing in ghosts was a prerequisite to knighthood in those days, but it's not that either.

3 of the 4 authors were scientists, an astronomer, a biologist and a botanist.
    Mr. Greene wasn't.

No. Time has run it's course.

I suspected everybody would overthink it. It's HG Wells, as he was born in Scotland while the others were English.

    Wildcard: Anybody post a Q.

    Wildcard: Anybody post a Q.

Quick one. What is the standard tuning of a six string guitar?

To what note, played upon what instrument, does a symphony orchestra normally tune?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 32,688 ✭✭✭✭ytpe2r5bxkn0c1

A on Oboe - at least they did in the orchestras my daughters played with.

It is indeed A4 (the A above middle C) on the oboe.

This is a bit of an odd one:

    What's peculiar about a blackbird's tongue?

It's something I've observed myself and when I realised it it surprised me. It's probably something well known, but in fairness I didn't know it was possible. Also, it could be common to other birds.

Hope you've managed to make some sense of that. :o

zoology is my field and I'm not sure what the question is really. :)

Birds have bones in their tongues but it's not unique to blackbirds, nor indeed just birds. No taste buds either.

I didn't know they had bones in their tongues! :) The taste buds one is interesting, too, I'll have to ask you a question about it after the question has been answered.

Neither of them is what I was looking for, though.
