It is a matter of risk. If anything happen to the Fresian Bull its a 100 euro down the drain, fresians are fairly robust animals so risk is low. IF anything happens to the ChX bull its 520 euro down the drain and in my experience the risk is slightly higher. The better the animal the higher the risk somthing will go wrong. If he coughs or a bit of snot is on his nose you are running to the vet as you have more invested.

    Define proper.

Some friesians I saw selling yesterday.
Spring 2015, 600kg - €980 nice types, good hair, came off limestone land Id say.
    Spring 2014, 646kg - €1070

proves how important it is to get cattle finished early.

On those figures both left the same margin between in and out
    720-120=600 euro
    1120-520 =600 euro.

Now why would you invest 520 euro when you would get exactly the same return for 120 euro. However you will be selling a dairy cross CH I would doubt if as a 450kg bull he would hit 2.45/kg more than likly back at the 2-2.2/kg. The Friesian would surprise you they have great weight gain it the f@@kin K/O and grading that kills you.

If you carry this to its logical conclusion you would sell every continental sired calf born to a sucker cow and replace with a friesian bull calf. I'll have lots of fr bull calves for sale next spring.:D

Yeah, sounds great in theory. What do you do when you sell the continental calf, put the Friesian bull calf in with the cow and she kills the friesian as soon as he tries to suck her?:pac:

GC, fine cattle and a good price. We've had the discussion about brigedeer before. Can't understand his stars though.

    Is he hard calved?
Lots of other Bulls with his pedigree would have better ratings

    Ampertaine Brigadeer figures in both Ireland and England;

    https://webapp.icbf.com/bull-search/view/564808786

    http://www.basco.org/beef/animalmanager/animaldetails/id/5006011#ebvs

He's only one star in Ireland, yet he is plus for both Maternal Production and Maternal production Value in the UK. You have to wonder.

Don't know but if the same bull is a bad maternal bull in Ireland, how can he be a good maternal bull in England. production systems are not that different. Maybe ICBF will change the goalposts in the future and change 5 star bulls to 1 star and vice versa.

Conspiracy theorists at work. Eurogene wouldn't be inside that inner circle. ;)

Goodman. Great to hear abit of good news. Some lad's hear would have you believe that you'd be better off going down to the shed and shooting the cows, Actually scratch that, save yourself some money on bullets and strangle them by hand 1 at a time.

Was it the same story with heifers???

Jaysus great prices. Anyone any idea on how steers are doing? Is it just small weanlings that are heavy? Thinking buying a few heavy ones to try and clean up some WBC so I can just power harrow it. From a great crop it turned into awful sh*te. Not sure they will eat it.
