I've found the age of the car to be massive. Much more than the power, engine size etc. Just out of curiosity, I did an online change of car quote on my Aviva policy for a 2015 Golf R. €550 for the year. I couldn't believe it.

I've given up trying to understand them. They're just a pain in the hole. Every year my policy goes up so I have to spend a half day on the phone to get one going the right direction. I think they just put it up because most people wont bother changing companies. It's like they have a new customer discount for the first year so when its gone at the renewal your policy stays the same or goes up.

As far I know, the NC MX-5 has ESP, TC and ABS?

Couldn't tell you man. Very surprised if it didn't have at least the TC and ABS. I pay no notice to anything made in the last ten years :).

One insurance company wouldn't quote me on the megane as they said it would be too powerful and new :pac: some of them must classify a normal car as about 60 bhp and everything else is performance car. My dad gets cheap insurance but you don't seem to get it till your well into your mid 30's. I suppose once you get to 25 onwards it gets a little bit less painful. My mother had a claim 6 years ago and she is only starting to get decent prices now she had some hardship for the first 3 years and the claim was only 10k euro or something like that no third party involved either as it happened in our driveway :pac:

Sure I had a claim over 3 years ago and it hasn't bothered me at all, the likes of Liberty/Aviva don't care about them after 3 years.

Yeah the new R / GTI has a low insurance group rating. Down to all the extra safety gizmos. A MK7 GTI / R is significantly cheaper to insure than a MK5 / 6.

Lads assuming you had tyres that had really bad road noise wouldn't you just get a flat humming noise that gets worse as you speed up. Like you wouldn't get a woosh woosh woosh noise. I'm just checking as I can't say ive every had tyres that gave bad road noise.

It could be a tyre wear indicator or a wheel bearing. As your tyres are new it may well be a bearing. Swap the tyres front to back and see if the noise moves to another area. If it doesn't go back to them.

Ah I rang this morning and they said bring it straight in so they are taking it in this afternoon to look at it and see. So I'll let them see what they think. I've been in a drove cars with sh!ty tyres and they've never made noise like this would seem too extreme for road noise of the tyres. Car probably won't make the noise when I get there it seems to be always the way.

If you had a jack, and axle stand you could lift the car and spin the wheel and see if the noise is still there. It's a tough one to diagnose really, it could be a wheel bearing, but there's lots of other things it could be too.

Hopefully it's nothing too major Id imagine the mechanics in renault that are sick of looking at meganes will be able to tell quickly enough whether or not a bearing is going or if the discs are warped.

In other news seen this article 27% of people don't know how much interest they pay on their car loans not really that suprising. The way the article is going on we will be back to full Celtic tiger in months. Won't be long before the pre approved credit cards start coming through the letter box again :pac:

It doesn't end there BP. There's the interest on the car loan to save on the cheap tax and so you have the disposable income from the cheap diesel to pay the insurance in installments.

They were sending them to everyone at one stage. Now if you go into a bank looking for one they make a huge deal out of it and even if the give it to you it might only be for 1k or 2k euro whereas as before it would have been 5-10k euro.

I was very tempted by the paying insurance in installments I think it would have been 90 euro in interest which is not rediculous I suppose but I opted just to pay it in one go might as well be proper broke sure :pac:

Any idea what happens if you pay in one go but would like to put a hold on it for a few months? I pay in installments and last year for one month and the year before for 3 months, I was travelling so it was easy as ringing the insurance company and informing them I wouldn't be driving. They took the difference from my remaining monthlies then. As long as my insurance is around €1k, I'll be doing monthly payments.

    1994

    fierce late for an Orion

I bought it off a man who bought it new from Ford it was a sale because they replaced the Orion the previous year. I don't see what my car has to do with anything.

I joined this board for the politics section its interesting to find what else there is. Am I allowed to sell cars here I wouldnt mind changing the Orion to something cheaper to tax. Maybe a van like a volkswagen they are fierce reliable and cheap. Van for commercial tax I think - if I have a herd number I can get van tax?

I didn't even realise you could do that I though they would make you cancel the policy and make you take out another one.

That's what DoneDeal is for. You can try adverts.ie as well but...

I suppose you can stick the link to your ad in Bangernomics thread as well.

It was very handy for that. Didn't end up paying for the months I was away and since I still had the policy active, it's not seen as a gap between policies :)

    Anyhoooo...

Hardly worth a thread - but does anyone know of a source for, or alternative to Texaco MTF-94 (Rover / Land Rover gearbox oil)?
Looks like it's 75w80 GL4. I know nothing about gearbox oils. Should one quality 75W80 GL4 be able to substitute for another without issues?

I can't post links though, it blocks me as a new user. I tried in the political board yesterday and it blocked me.

I thought 50 was the threshold for posting links.
Head over to politics there and have a bash.
You can see if anyone rises to the "Maybe a van like a volkswagen they are fierce reliable and cheap. Van for commercial tax I think - if I have a herd number I can get van tax?" line again later if you can't stir anything over there?

Ah yes I remember you posting a picture of the 5 y spoke before, did you get new alloys on your Mondeo after?

Ya I did indeed. Changed from the 16's to a very similar looking 17". They are the ones found on the zetec sport and some of the titaniums.

Back from the garage took them a while to diagnose it but front passenger wheel bearing is on the way out Thats what's causing the noise so. So they have it ordered and between me having to work so much over the next few weeks and them waiting for the part im not getting it done till Friday 2 weeks. At least I know what's wrong now.

They are covering it under warranty too :)
