Diesel as he'll be doing a lot of mileage, he doesn't like the Kia or Hyundai's or Focus, I told him the best thing to do is test drive as many as you can and see which one you love to drive, just kinda looking for other models

What about going upto something bigger in size like a mondeo, passat, insignia if he doesn't like any of the mid size stuff. Does he not like golds either or are they out of budget ?

A work colleague is changing his car, anyone recommend cars like golf etc, looking from 08-10, he's a young guy but no boy racer.

Here's my recommendation, Toyota Auris 1.4 D4D Sport. Very very nice car IMO. Spacious inside, even if you are sitting in the back. And I'd be recommending th Sports version too.

That is so far from sport-y it's not even funny

I had one as a company car with 18 inch alloys, lowered and with full TRD/Toyota Motorsport kit and twin exhaust. It was still an unpleasant car, and totally at odds with the €5k of shiney stuff stuck onto it

He does like the mid size just not the few I mentioned as he's friends drive them and he doesn't want the same car as them. I did actually recommend the Auris and was told by a few females that I was mad, I kinda like the look of the Nissan Pulzar and the Dacia is growing on me :D He had never heard of them  thanks for your replies guys :)

Very nice to drive, nice spec and not bad looking. Different from the likes of a Golf as they are very common nowadays.

Golf is one of the cars he likes but thinks is too common, something between 1.5 to 2l and diesel, you would think it would be easy :D

Make sure those females dont think you are saying Yaris instead of Auris.. I was mentioning the Auris to my sister and she thought I was saying Yaris and thought I was absolutely crazy :pac: (she too is looking for a car like your friend (hatchback, 2008+, diesel etc.))

Im no massive golf fan, but a mk6 golf is far superior car in almost every department. The original Auris was a relatively terrible car. The midlife facelift, like the car linked addressed a good few of the flaws in the interior and the poor, outdated initial choice of engines - the current model is quite decent, but I can think of no reason why anybody would buy an Auris over most other cars in that class.

We'll see how he gets on with the test drives, and who has the best scrappage deals.

Scrappage deals on used cars are nonsense. The only way you can give big money for something worthless is if you've built big discount into the asking price.

Christ that's gorgeous..... I really have this urge to polish it though? Hahaha

That leather is the only interior to have,Want edgeiful caramel colour.

Good price on the tyres too, I do hope it serves you well! What made you decide to have one anyway? I'm just curious!

The interior is spotless too! Fair play.

Could do with a buff alright. I wouldnt have a clue where to start though. Only know how to make them dirty! Was thinking of doing it bit by bit by hand. Probably need a machine polish? I going to clean and polish bits of the engine bay as its stripped out to do the belts and sort that leak.

Ive wanted a 156 for years now. Drove a 156 there 4/5 years ago and enjoyed myself. Wasnt even a great example. Looked into them back then but they were too pricey at the time. Bought the primera last summrr to drive into the ground and save money for something decent. Wanted to get a sw then too but the only decent one going was 2.5 k. It was mint but. Primera(the tank I called it) refused to break something that cost more than a tenner so spent 8 months driving a 4 pot diesel car. Got stick all winter off the lads as its something i swore id never do. Id always tell people thinking of buying oil burners that diesel's for vans! ... I was looking at some e36 tourings too. Drove a few. Lovely mechanical feel to driving them but the ones I looked all had bad noises. Starters, diff and like moaning. Gear box was really sloppy on them. Drove that 156 my mates boss had around the same time and thought thats so much nicer. Clicks into each gear like no car ive driven. Much quicker than the 318i too so went off the bimmers.
    Tldr
Basically, long story short, wanted a nice 1.6 - 2.0 petrol estate for 1k tops that wasn't going to **** metal onto the road somewhere down the country. Honda aerodecks, legacys and audi 80/A4 were in the running too.

One thing I remember about ex rental cars coming back after the season was the amount of roof damage on a lot of the cars.
Not just scratches. Dents, scrapes, gouges of paint missing.

Nissan, makers of cars mainly for rental companies and the clergy have come up with a novel solution - the factory-dented roof.

I usually try not to look directly at a current model micra, but saw one in a car park today

So a cousin is looking for a 1.5 Diesel saxo/106. He would be doing the mileage for a diesel...

Anything to look out for? Are they any good?

Jaysis. Looks like they put a crumple zone in the roof so the rear axle hits you in the back of the head.

He should make sure he can live with the pedal layout

pedals offset to one side - and I think they were close together.

Pretty irksome on what was imo - quite a nice car to drive otherwise

Nice steering though - probably the nicest ive ever experienced tbh

In saying that - the issue was probably exaggerated by coming to the Saxo from a Nissan Sunny with particularly good driving position and ergonomics

That is a very real possibility with alot of others cars too.

Gotta love some of the ads that appear on those buy and sell Facebook pages. Cheap but there's a catch

Not nearly as much. Car safety has moved on a lot since 1991 (when that car was first produced). If you have a head on collision in a modern car, you have a good chance of walking out. In older cars where the floor and roof deform, and the front wheel is driven into the footwell, there's a much greater chance of fatality or permanent injury.

For someone doing high mileage, it makes no sense to buy something like a saxo.

I'm not saying newer cars are impenetrable and that nobody ever dies in crashes by the way.

I was chatting to a retired fireman/truck mech. a while ago. He said people used to fear the jap cars when they first arrived because they crumpled up easily and people were getting pulled from cars with awful injuries. He said though what they didnt realise and took a while to sink in with people was the same crash in a rock solid british car would kill you instantly.

Just saw this on a detailing group on Facebook, yes, that is rust on what looks like an 08/09- Mercedes.

How exactly do insurance brokers make their money? It's renewal time, went to the broker, he gave me my quote, which was cheaper than last year despite insurance generally going up. I'm with Aviva, but through said broker. I said I'd ring Aviva direct and see if they could match/beat the brokers quote. I'd prefer going direct tbh, because you can log on online and fiddle with the policy, add drivers, cars etc at any time, whereas the broker is 9-5 Mon to Fri. It's nearly always during the weekend when you need to transfer insurance, typical! Anyway, Aviva themselves couldn't match the broker, no where near infact, a good few hundred more is the best they could do!?? You'd think that cutting out the middle man, you would get it cheaper, no? I suppose the brokers have some clause in it, they wouldn't be in the game otherwise!

I think brokers get special deals not available to the public.

    How much is your renewal?

How do you actually add drivers/ change cars online? I don't have the option to. I just have a change password and view policy documents option.

It's not with all companies, just aviva let you transfer insurance, and add drivers, just seen it on their website before, never had the opportunity to try it out myself. You enter your policy no. and password and away you go I think.

I might go through a broker myself next time. Was yours a small local one or a well known one?

Yeah I'm with them, when I log in, I have no options to do any of that.
