Yeah that's true there are plenty of HM specific plans it would probably be just easier to go with one of them :p I enjoyed the meno plan so much I thought if I just sort of halved it and changed the MP runs to HMP runs it might work :)

I'll have a look at the one's suggested and maybe come up with a mish mash of stuff I enjoy and that suits me.

    Thanks folks!

I think sticking to a specific HM plan would be best, unless you intend on continuing onto to do a Marathon. I know we can/usually do HM as part of training for a marathon but it wouldn't have specific HM sessions that would benefit HM training & racing.

Early part of Meno plan has lots of progression runs and running 15-20 sec
slower faster than MP, you just don't need to get up beyond 13-14 miles and
if it's a plan you enjoyed why not just jump in, MP pace may suit a little better
    anyway while getting back fitness.

    22nd October
Run: Cabinteely parkrun @ easy pace - 3.1 miles @ 10:43 avh HR 149 (started way too fast + hills)

    23rd October
Longwood 10K in 58:43. Splits were 9:47, 9:52, 9:45, 9:35, 8:49, 8:54 and 8.30 for the .2 avg HR 169 (max 185 which is my max) Massive thanks to younganne who hauled me around this course in the cold, wind and rain and wouldn’t let me quit. I’m pretty disappointed to be so far back from where I was this time last year not to mention where I was earlier this year but as Anne said don’t look back at where you were, move on to where you want to be (very apt and relevant for life as well as running….). Glad to catch up with Tang and crew too.

Well done AM don't be so hard on yourself +1 to what Anne said. Keep looking forward.

To echo what A said don't be to hard on yourself. Illness/injury is ****ty and hard to take, but it's what makes us stronger runners I think. It's easy to throw the towel in and say shag this running lark it's not worth it. But you have the dedication and determination to get back out there and get back to where you once were. It's not easy, but it is worth it.

I'm not sure 'warmed up' is the right phrase, more gasped my way through! It's incredible to think Anne is going to do 26.2 miles at a pace I couldn't hold for 2 miles today

Funny you should say that....I've been considering throwing in the towel a lot recently but today and yesterday reminded me that even though it's hard, I love racing so I"m going to give it one last shot. Great to catch up today, thanks as always and roll on Barcelona!!!

P.S. on the photo comment, you're just jealous :D

Well done AM, don't be hard on yourself at all as you've had a tough year. I like the motto there too. You're only going to get faster again now with a training cycle under your belt. Good strong finish and if a 10K doesn't feel terrible in the second half you've not done it right!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭Younganne

    Yes forward facing!!
Great run and you did it yourself, I was just along to chat and annoy those around us!! you will get back to where you were and move past it and onwards in no time at all! Patience and all good things come to those who wait train patiently and at the correct paces;). There wasn't a bother on you within 2mins of finishing so that says a lot

Great stuff today, stuck to plan and nice strong finish, onwards and upwards.

Don't get too despondent FD. Tough coming back from a significant layoff, especially when you have to be extra careful about how quick you can jump back in. I found it frustrating too when I was struggling to hit times or miles that only a few months previous had been doable. All you can do now is know that each time you race and train it brings you a bit closer to where you were and before you know it you'll be there. Even if it feels it takes a while!

You were pushing yourself on as the race progressed, don't forget - focus on the positives that are there! Good to get that familiarity again of dealing with thst hurting feeling, takes a while to get used to I think, certainly was for me!

Onwards and upwards again, no bother to you.

Thanks Laura, I'm reading your progress with much envy :D actually, I'm reading your progress with hope, you're right I know, everyone else too. Some structured training and a bit of hard work and I can get back to where I was plus make some improvements. That starts this week with a return to club training.

There were plenty of positives from yesterdays race. We chatted for the first 3 miles, from mile 3 onwards we were passing people, when the going got tough Anne wouldn't let me quit or slow down - proof that I can hold pace when I'm pushing hard without actually dying on the spot :D

The new plan starts today, it's a bit of a mish mash of base building and racing but the races are short (apart from RTL) and I'm using them to re-introduce speed, none of them are targets in themselves.

Imagine it's Christmas 2017 (it'll be here before you know it). You'll have more than a year of training behind you and probably be fitter and faster than you ever were. 2016 will be an unfortunate, unavoidable blip in your running career. If you're defeated, and give up, then you'll just be sitting there with a frown on your face, staring at a Christmas pudding thinking "I can't eat that, it'll go straight to my hips. Woe is me, if only I hadn't given up running last year!"

You spend so much time encouraging everyone else, if you go down what does that mean for the rest of us? :D

The best of Luck with the new plan AM, the doubts etc are all part of the journey , you'll be back where you want to be in no time for sure.

Max would lose the run of himself all together if he hadn't got you to keep him in check.

Well done on getting this far AM. It's understandable you're disappointed but realistically, it's not just a question of fitness lost. Your body has been through the mill for the last 12 months. Your body this year went down to levels not many of us here experience. Don't expect too much of yourself too soon.

I had a quick look at your plan. Some thoughts:

    - Why mish mash? 'Mish mash' and 'structure' are not usually compatible....A 'mish-mashed structure' will be a mishy-mashy structure.....

    - for a base building plan, it seems kinda complicated. I heard a great piece of advice years ago. You have to say it in the American accent it was given to me in: "keep it simple, stoopid"....
You could base build quite effectively by a mixture of short, medium and long runs, a stride/short hills session and a race at the end of every fourth or fifth week, i.e., step-back week.....talking of which, where is your step back week?!

    - be very clear about the real purpose of racing in this phase. Is it going to be a session? In that case, you will be having at least two sessions a week....

    - where are your strides? They will provide an effective speed stimulus in the base phase, you don't *have* to race

    - do the Sli Cualann one :D

    - is a hilly run ever really easy? What sort of hills are planned? If it's an easy long run, can you omit the hills? If not, it's probably verging on a session. I know you're preparing for connemara but maybe consider the hilly lsr every second week. (You could also do some 8-10 sec hill reps instead of strides every second week to prep for your hill sessions in the second phase, see above)

    - be cautious about building to 120 mins. Listen to your body.

    SECOND PHASE
    - For the second phase, your weekends look really heavy. A tempo run followed by a 1:45 min run sounds like a helluva stimulus. It's too easy to overload these back-to-back sessions. You have three pretty hardcore stimuli per week in this plan.....
Would a tempo Sat/90 min max lsr on the Sunday accomplish the same goal every second weekend with the other alternating weekend comprising of 60 mins with strides and over-distance lsr on the Sunday work?

    - Where's your step-back week? You could lash out a park run or something at the end of the step back week. Would the races of the first phase serve a more useful function in the second phase?

Good luck with it all anyway and I am surprised you ever thought we'd let you throw in the towel ;)
