Was on facebook today and one of my friends posted this beauty.

"a child that has gay parents will more than likely turn out to be gay and if that keeps happening many years down the line there won't be one straight person around"

Needless to say I tried to 'debate' this point with him but he deleted the post and thread. He's 19.

obviously with much to learn. like some basic biology.

Thanks. I guess that's the thing with referenda, it has to be Yes or No, and not a box for "Something different - please provide suggestions" !
Perhaps it's a case of the Yes campaign not wanting to muddy the waters and let this slip, or perhaps a sense of their own situation being more legitimate than others.

Indeed, that's what I meant on the second point.
We can't say as a rule that kids are better off in any particular type of arrangement anymore, it's more a case by case basis, rule nothing out. If it works, it works.

this referendum has nothing to do with kids. in any way.

The trolling aspect I considered, but unfortunately he was being quite serious.

    Saw some NO posters today.

If anyone is offended by the posters just vote yes in the referendum instead of complaining.

I think the offence stems from the fact that they're spouting lies. But yes, definitely the best way to counteract it is to make sure to get out and vote.

I thought this was a great response. Apologies if it's been posted already.

We had some up right outside the school, was going to say it to the principal but he was already in touch with the campaigners "mothers and fathers matter" and had them taken down as it was inappropriate for them to be placed outside a school where many of the students may find them distressing. If you see them in areas like that, ring and ask for them to be removed. They'll ask that you mind them so they can be erected elsewhere but better than children who have lost a parent having to stare at the, all day.

I'm not religious and I didn't have a religious marriage ceremony, I had a civil ceremony. I'm cool and rebellious that way. I am a breeder though. Maybe that's why I'm not cool.

The aesthetics of a church are so nice though. I think if I was straight and had to go down that route I'd console myself with a nice church in Italy of France. Do they do weddings at the Vatican?

It really is a ridiculous campaign they are trying to spin. Barely anyone has fallen for their lies, if anything it's just outraged more people (particularly single parents) and will benefit us yes voters. How they can't see that is beyond me!

Then don't get married? Why vote against everyone else being able to?

Too be honest I think the whole thing has descended into a joke by the Yes side. You have the likes of James Reilly out canvassing. All sorts of austerity figures are allowed to join the 'progressive' bandwagon. This is the straight community's 'Selma' moment.

The yes side are imposing their conformity onto me. Its bad enough being asked questions abut being gay. Now I'll have to answer questions as to why I'm not married.

I think you'll find Messer Mills and Manning are rather conservative in their approach. I don't believe in antiqued religious institutions such as marriage. If the breeders want it, let them have it, but its not for me thanks.

Why not just be honest and say it does. If you want gay families to be fully equal why hide behind this. Are gay families not equal now too.

I'm not complaining because I'm offended, I'm complaining because I'm worried some people might actually pay attention to them

    As a random question -
Is the issue of extending marriage to other non-traditional beliefs, i.e. those who believe in multiple spouses, co-dependent family members, culture where people get married at younger ages etc. on the table?
The right to marriage already exists under law, unlike all of the things you mention in your post above. Men, women, heterosexuals and homosexuals, can already marry each other; same sex marriage will simply allow the discriminatory nature of the right to marry to end by allowing two men or two women to marry each other. That's all.

Same sex marriage benefits straight people as much as it does gay people, as it ends the discrimination in the right to marriage, thus bringing about equality. That's why I'm voting Yes, not particularly for gay people, but to be able to end the discriminatory nature of marriage as a right.

Certain yes campaigners still taking vote no posters, the message this sends out is our side of the argument is 100% right , the no side argument is wrong so we will silence no campaigners by taking down their posters so the electorate can only view and see yes campaign posters, I feel this will backfire on them come polling day.

I was going to vote Yes but the Childish nature of this whole thing has me deciding to stay away on polling day.

I see more maturity in Junior infants.

I fear the Yes side is losing the run of themselves slightly.

Stuff like tearing down posters (even if I detest said posters and all they stand for) and even the giant mural. The mural didn't have planning permission so is classed as graffiti. If the No side had put it up in the dead of night (like it was) and without the planning permissions, the Yes side would be screaming bloody murder until it was taken down.

Yes had the moral highground until this stuff started happening.

On polling day these yes bullies taking down posters won,t be able to bully or harass anyone in the privacy of the polling booth.

You seem to generalise when it suits you, getting any friends to throw stones through windows today?

The yes equality people in Cork said that people shouldnt be taking them down.

You do realise you're not voting for the YES or NO side in this referendum? You're voting on whether to end the discriminatory nature of the right to marry. The fact that lots of children know this is perhaps a case for the voting age to be lowered so that the kids can compensate for the likes of yourself.

I know that there have been a load of these posts about changing away from a Yes vote because of how the campaign is being conducted. And I know that most of them never really intended to vote Yes anyway. But for god sake you are voting on an amendment to the constitution - that's it. Voting based on any other criteria is stupid. Either you think the constitution should be amended or not.

It's actually really immature to decide to change your vote based on how people talk about it or conduct the campaign or to "get back" at the government or any other reason these supposed yes-voters give.

I doubt most of those people will actually vote anyway. They come across as the kind of people who are the first to complain, last to do anything about it.

Could you imagine 50 years ago a black person saying they shouldn't be allowed to vote, because it's a "white institution", or 100 years ago, a woman saying the same because voting is a "male institution"?

You don't have to imagine it:

‘Antis’ tended to see women’s role as concentrating on womanly duty, a maternal role and the exercise influence and reform through other means – through the example of her behaviour, service and gentle influence on men for the good. Prominent anti-suffragist writers included the novelists Mary Ward and Ouida and the traveller and diplomatist Gertrude Bell and even women committed to the extension of women’s rights in other areas like Elizabeth Wordsworth, Principal of Lady Margaret Hall, the Oxford women’s college or Florence Bell, playwright and friend and collaborator with suffragist and social campaigner Elizabeth Robins. Often anti-suffrage campaigners combined an involvement in social action with their anti-suffrage views, their actions based on a belief in women’s distinctive role in doing good works and helping the disadvantaged.

The actions of the YES side bear no correlation to a YES vote.

The YES side can strap c4 to their bodies and blow up O'Connell Bridge, and a YES vote would still be a vote for equality.

Those stating faux concern at the behaviour of the YES side as reason for not voting YES really have no clue what they are voting YES for in the first place, or simply do not care, which is a shame. And while the YES side should share some of the blame for that, some people will never overcome their own ignorance.

You might be surprised, there is prob a % of people out there at two minds about which way to vote, and then see the anti democratic nature of some yes campaigners taking down vote no posters, and might feel and think if they vote yes that they,re being bullied and pressured into it, and might likely vote no in the privacy of the polling booth, remember the Martina Genockey video from last summer the way campaigners were very up in her face, that backfired and got her a lot more votes, same can happen with this current referendum campaign due to the actions of some ( not all ) yes campaigners.

And some of them will be shocked about the tactics the No side are using due to a lack of an argument and vote Yes based on that. There's bad campaigning on both sides.
