Saw a lovely 747 take off from Dublin Airport this morning. Was raging I didn't get my camera out on time but was too busy looking at it to try make out what it was.

Seems it was a DUB - BAH flight. Obviously not a regular thing?

It was about 24kts going westerly, so a complete crosswind.

Id say it was wind, unless the runway was too wet or had something on it which meant the aircraft werent cleared to land.

Fair enough so but on what runway? aren't the stobarts clear to land on the small runway too?

Wind was veering all morning. Favoured rwy 17 and cloud base was at Cat 1 minima but on the verge of Cat 2. As the wind turned more westerly it went out of limits. Rwy 25 couldn't be used as the cloudbase was too low for a VOR appr. Frontal activity passed through in about 20 mins and wind speed reduced.

1st Stobart landed on rwy 17 after a brief hold followed by 2nd stobart. Shamrock landed on rwy 35.

Majority of N-reg bizjets are corporate-operated, so C-level officers and board members mainly.

Also cogs-in-the-wheel staff if they strike it lucky with travel dates and there are seats free! Used to happen where I worked, though sadly not to me.

Those who did fly in the corp jets said it was completely different to mundane airline travel; they showed-up at the corporate aviation gate 10 mins before departure, the usher carried their luggage to the aircraft and they grabbed a coffee and pastries from the lounge on their way through...

EIN108(EI-LBT) is now in the hold off the west coast and will most likely return to DUB after sufficient fuel has been burned off. not squawking 7700.

    A bit odd, no?

Flightaware has it listed as taking off from DUB at 10pm. Maybe they are expecting them to return to DUB?

I wonder what they are doing?

Looks like a tactical delay probably to make an oceanic entry time restriction.

Often Oceanic airspace crossing clearances have time restrictions. In this airspace here is no radar coverage so separation is ensured based upon something called the mach number technique; aircraft fly a constant mach number and are separated from preceding and following aircraft by time. Therefore, its quite common that aircraft are told that they may enter oceanic airspace 'At or after' a time, to ensure that the aircraft ahead of them has enough time to create sufficient separation. Usually flying slower in domestic airspace ensures this, but often it isn't possible to fly slow enough to meet this restriction and so some form of delaying action is required - often a delaying vector to create more track miles, or a simple hold or two.
