    It is all right.

I went for a nap earlier so I'll be awake for the fights but I'm sitting here now thinking what am I doing with my life!

He won't be on til after 5am I don't think.

You could watch the first two lord of the rings?

I really don't care at all about UFC or MMA in general. I'd watch the fight if it were on at a reasonable hour (like now), but not arsed staying up all night to see it.

That's the billed time but sure it's depends on the competitiveness of the undercard. He could be on earlier.

Is the undercard decent or is it just a load of bums?

It's not like boxing where it's all about the main event, the whole card is well worth watching

Can't get a real Kung po on this island... And by real I mean the American version where it was invented.

Having said that there's a brilliant schezuan restaurant on Parnell st called schezuan chilli king (original, I know) and it's proper schezuan cuisine. Highly recommended!

Is that the one down from the Kingfisher, across from Peats?

Anyone staying up for the Pendred and McGregor fights?

Am I the only one who has a sneaky hope Mendes beats the cocky f*cker? Or is that not a popular view in these parts? :D

I'd say there's plenty out there who'd be happy for McGregor to get a beating.

I'm not a big fan of ju-jitsu. I don't understand what they are doing most of the time.

    ..

I don't follow MMA but ended up watching his series on RTE one night away with work, something like the glorious?

I really didn't take to him at all, he came across as absolutely full of himself.

Maybe it's the sportmanship of the game he's in though?

Just didn't like him at all.

I reckon I'll stay up for Pendred and then set an alarm for McGregor. What time do you think it'll be on at?

McGregor done the business. Mendes was wrestling him up and down the shop but couldn't live with him on the feet.

I woke at 5 because of the light coming into the room. Opened the periscope app on the phone, turned the volume off and watched the fight for free in the comfort of my scratcher!!

Ok so for the guys on here who are really into MMA, was that a fix or is it just tin foil hats and sour grapes?

Did you see the punch Mendes took that knocked him down? Not sure how people can call it a fix.

I'm not a fan of ufc, I'll admit that, but is it starting to look like this generations wwe, just with a few proper slaps thrown?

I'm no follower but he got a serious bang on the jaw...ref had to stop it...He wasn't defending himself and with the power that mcgregor has he could have done some serious damage to him.

Not a fix, McGregor actually is as good as he says he is

Jesus no way...these guys are hardcore. Elbows to the face, flying knees. This isn't just a "few proper slaps". These are digs to take you out. No real showboating in the octagon.

I would have been a huge boxing fan through the years (benn, eubank, tyson, naseem (hated him), McCullogh). These lads I would have watched their fights religiously - even getting up at mad hours to watch Tyson as a kid. However boxing has become so political and lads avoiding each other and pure dilution of belts mean it has lost a lot of it's shine.

I'm starting to get into the whole MMA/UFC scene a bit more and it seems to me to really have a big following. I can take or leave McGregor as a person but as a fighter he backs up everything and for that I respect him hugely.

Just a pity I couldn't devote myself to the training and ultimately the body condition of the fighters what with my commitment to things like sweets, beer, takeaways, crisps and laziness.

People who follow it are saying online that refs have been a lot slower to stop fights than that, especially that close to the bell.

From my perspective, which is knowing f@*k all squared about MMA, the damage was already done when McGregor got 4-5 elbows to Mendes head a bit before that, Mendes didn't seem to fully recover from that.

Not a chance. It's more like boxing when it was at it's biggest in the 90's.

I stayed up to watch the whole card. Absolutely unbelievable -best card I've ever seen.

Anyone who saw the Rory n Robbie fight will know there's no fixes in that sport.

Also the theatre was well and truly gone when McGregor was weeping into the flag.

Yeah I saw the replay and thought he was pretty quick to jump in there. I've pretty much zero interest in UFC, but to me any sport where the organisers employ all the participants is wide open to being fixed - you do what you're told or you don't get another fight. McGregor is gold dust to the UFC organisation, they couldn't afford for him to lose that fight.

    *takes off tinfoil hat

    *cat, meet these pigeons... :D

I thought the same thing after the last McGregor fight. It might the case where me and you haven't seen enough fights.

There have been plenty of big upsets in UFC history so not really sure about fixing. It's certainly a changing sport though the last 3 - 4 years though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,308 ✭✭✭✭.ak

Nah, if it was a fix then the pragmatic business choice would be for McGregor to lose. They're in an awkward decision now how to involve him in dublin.

Refs aren't employed by the UFC if that's what you mean, they work for independent athletic commissions

The stoppage was fair, ref has to protect the fighters and Mendes was clearly not intelligently defending himself. It seems to have become accepted that a fighter takes multiple shots on the ground after being dropped by a punch before the ref steps in, but Mendes was done, that particular ref is the best in the business and he made a good call

Exactly, you can see deans running in as soon as Mendes jaw buckles, he's well aware that he's done. Now there's a lot being said if he let it go on the bell would've saved the round but it's unfair to expect the ref to favour a fighter in that regard. He was consistent with what we saw during the card, refs jump in whenever a fighter curls up without movement to protect themselves.
