Short memory on your part. There were plenty disappointed to see him go out on loan. It's a weird sort of logic where some people having been glad to see the back of him makes the rest of us hypocrites.

Not at all as I said some people not everyone. I just find it amazing now how many people are talking about nani after he scored a decent goal in Portugal... I still don't deny that I was glad he is gone and i still am. I can remember how many times he waisted possesion in games with silly shots that end up in row z. I'm not saying he is all bad I loved him at times but most of the time over past few seasons he was so frustration to look at.. On the republic of mancunia site they have a thread dedicated to how bad he is and it was one of the most popular threads on the site so in general yeh most fans prob did want him gone same as myself.

Yeah in those 1200 league minutes he played over 2 seasons he didn't do too well. I wonder what sort of reason there could be for that?

Here's the thing; I distinctly remember many a poster on here complaining after every game in that season that we were really poor, that RVP was continually bailing us out, and that sooner or later, we'd be sunk; that if anything happened RVP, we were in serious trouble.

People look back now with rose-tinted glasses, but while the football in that year may have been cavalier, "We'll score 5 if you score 4", the general consensus at the time seemed to be that we were lucky that RVP won games on his own while the rest of the team struggled yet other teams around us all bombed horribly.

It wasn't as bad as Moyes, who basically ostracized the most important player from the season before and was a disaster of highest proportions. And it wasn't as bad as LVG since RVP's form meant we were getting wins. But the squad were playing at a really low level overall if we're being honest, and it certainly wasn't a level we should be aspiring to in terms of on pitch overall preformances.

Your correct. I remember many a shocking display under Fergie in his last couple of seasons. Teams like Southampthon and Liverpool dominating the play at OT. Teams waltzing through our midfeild.

We were more direct and attacking better but our control and ability to dominate games was very poor at times. Of course Fergie could get that bit more out of them and gt wins and trophies whilst not being at our best but rose tinted classes is right.

We haven't been a team to control a game from the outset until the final whistle for longer then the past two seasons.

There is a difference in not playing well and been wasteful in possession the biggest problem with nani over last few years was not that he couldn't pass the ball or cross the ball he was actually good at that when he tried the problem was he didn't try that often he opted to go for goal from the most ridicules angels or distances and and ballooned the ball into the stands.

Again you are getting ahead of yourself. We arent at the stage where we "need" them to slip up. We are still ahead of them!!.

Also I think we will pick up more points against the bigger teams than many are predicting. Ironically it has been the lower placed teams that have beaten Utd well this season. Against the bigger teams they have either picked up point of been very narrowly been beaten.

Yeah I get the feeling Van Gaal can set the team out nicely against the top 3. Funny enough we have been pretty decent against Chelsea, City and Arsenal all things considered. Probably be the rare occasions where opposition won't sit off us deep, and there will be a real onus on being fast on the break, utilising Di Maria and potentially Wilson.

Maybe the Swansea game will be a kickup the ass to them I'm glad we have to play all our rivals still its still in our hands and it will come down to who wants it enough.

My uneducated view is that Van Gaal's key strengths over the years has been in assessing players, particularly young players, and figuring out where their best positions are. This skill has worked wonders at other clubs, where short term expectations were low - he has produced fabulous teams but it has taken time for them to gel.

The trouble for him at United is that he now has the ability to buy fabulous players at high prices - and the fans expect that he will immediately slot those players into their "normal" position. Instead he has been the Van Gaal of old, e.g. shifting Di Maria & Rooney around, playing Valencia & Young as wing-backs - in many ways he has been ignoring their previous form and treating them as young players with an attitude of "I don't care where you think your best position is, in time I'll figure that out." That's what leads to the unbalanced teams, and players being played in what looks like odd or unusual positions - and it's why he says that he still hasn't figured out his best team. Any manager could stick Di Maria in the center/wing with Rooney up front, but Van Gaal doesn't see it that way.

The question is whether he can have that time to do this sort of player development at a club like United? Personally I'm willing to give him at least another two years, despite the results - we need to lay proper foundations and put off short term performance for hopefully long term results.

I think when you look back on his previous stints he has an eye for promoting youth but also making shrewd signings. He promoted the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Valdes and Puyol at Barcalona while also bringing in the likes of Cocu, the De Boers , Kluivert and Riquelme.

At Bayern, he again promoted quality talent. He brought Muller into the fold, laid the foundations for Schweinsteiger to change from being a winger to a CM and promoted Badstuber and David Aliba. He also brought a young Toni Kroos to the club, along with Mario Gomez and Arjen Robben. Interestingly he also oversaw the sales of Matts Hummels if the interwebs is to be believed.

Already in his short time we have seen Wilson, Blackett and McNair feature. McNair more so, even with a potential future at RB. While Wilson might have been a known entity, there is a difference playing him in end of season curtain closer, and starting him at home to Liverpool.

I'm confident he will promote the right player, and bring in the right signing. And when you look back at both Ajax,Barcalona and Bayern, even AZ, the clubs typically benefit from his eye for youth, long after he is gone.

If we have good players operating at underage, he won't be afraid to use them and promote them and get them right, so we can benefit for years to come.

To be honest there has been plenty of times you'd think they'd see a result as a kick up the arse, or when we have gotten a draw or win against it, you'd think the penny would drop.

Remarkable how this season and last season, the team is incapable of kicking up a gear, nevermind ingame, but week to week.

All the talk you'd hear from an opposing manager who was facing United after a loss was " the backlash". We would lose a game under Ferguson and then absolutely tear the next team apart.

Striking has been the teams inability to recognise a let off, or react to a bad result. Potentially down to Fergie's touch, but I think all the best teams feel the sting of a loss or know when they have got away with a result, and come out swinging harder the following match.

As many have pointed out, this loss against Swansea was coming, it wasn't out of the blue. It was either going to Saturday against Swansea, this Saturday against Sunderland or the week before agaisnt Burnley. The team was getting away with murder for weeks grabbing results and points and if the performances didnt improve someone would do us.

Can we really not play Rooney up top with Di Maria and Young wide and a midfield 3 taken from Herrera/Fellaini/Mata/Blind, am I to believe that that front 6 wouldn't out score the likes of Swansea and the other poor teams we've dropped points against regardless of how crap Jones etc are playing?

Van Gaal is getting it wrong, I refuse to believe we can't play better than this and get top 4

Checking, Rooney had 16 in all competitions, and Hernandez had 8. So 24 goals between them rather than the 20 each you were implying :P

And while our strikers might not be hitting form this season, we've still had Mata with 6, Herrera 5, DiMaria 5 and Fellaini with 4, with Smalling, Blind and Rojo also all registering goals with still plenty of games to play, so in fairness, we are scoring from all over the pitch (if anything, it's scary how our midfield is now probably one of our bigger dangers to other teams while our "world class" strikers flounder...)

I just did a check there, Rooney had 16, Hernandez had 18 :)

We declined once Ronaldo left. But the football we played between 09/10 and even Fergie last season was much better then this season and last.

We were still a decent force until Moyes came. We won a very good league in 10/11 and we gave Madrid a excellent 2 games in CL in Fergies last season.

The last season our two under Fergie may have seen a decline but it was not all that big either. We still got some very good results and could match the top teams. And we won trophies.

Either way surely ye should only be taking in the league goals into account as that is what ye are arguing. i.e. RVP dragging us to the league.. League goals Rooney had 12 and Hernandez had 10 while RVP had 26 which is more than the 2 others put together.

Not sure WTF this argument that things were better under Ferguson is meant to be proving.

The soccer was still insipid and dull but they were better under the GOAT manager who had been there a quarter century. Not exactly stop the presses stuff.

You're right, they could cram literally millions of people onto a guided tour...

Considering, they may have a max of say 40 people per tour, it sounds plausible.
