All the teams that played in the uefa cup had poor games today, Liverpool included, and in past seasons teams have performed badly after it. Its a big variable in terms of who finishes where in the race for the top 4.

The longer spurs and liverpool stay in the better for us and Liverpool have an easier draw in the FA cup there fixture list could get quite packed up very soon.

It'll be tight and I think southamton will be there or there abouts once they get their shooting boots back on.

They have beat arsenal at home, drew with chelsea and where unlucky to lose to us and the pool. Ive no idea why poeple are writing them off bar the fact what their name is

There goals have dried up. 3 home games without a goal. Could you see that happening to utd, arsenal or liverpool. Would take a miracle.

    Anyone read r/reddevils?

This was posted on it, last 2 lines were really unexpected.
we end outside top 4. probably 7th again. lots of players will leave. this include de gea, falcao, and hernandez, mata either sold or on loan. we'll bring in replacements that fans won't like due to their lack of popularity. but we'll perform better next year thanks to these player van gaal cherry picked to suit his system. we'll be back to 433 or 4411 if fellaini is playing.

still wont win us the league tho. that comes in lvg 3rd season when he'll bring more players, this time there'll be one or two high profilers that'll deliver us the title like rvp did.

then a film will be made about this in 10 years time with cristoph waltz as LVG, Andrew Garfield as Giggs, and Justin Bieber as David Beckham for whatever reason. it'll be suck and we're gonna hate it

I dont follow southampton too closely especially recently but 3 games in football is a very short period and for a team who rely on only a few players for chances creation and goal scoring I doubt its a big deviation from normal distribution.

Their main strengths seem to be defense, organisation, having a game plan and consistantly doing so. Fans at all the clubs you mention have asked for these throughout this season.

Southampton biggest weakness all season has been their attack and while taking your point they do some things better than the others in the race for the top 4

I would be lumping on the pool if I weren't a united fan, they have all the momentum while we just seem to be stagnating,

I will be lumping on them and I'm a United fan.

Also, as you were there, did the players seem a bit subdued when Herrera scored? on TV it looked like they were a bit, not sure if anyone elses noticed, someone on reddit said it too.

Noticed this myself while watching the Preston game at the time. When he scored, I thought he cut a lonesome figure in his goal celebration. For a cup game, a goal that gave us the lead in the match, and from a returning player, I thought it would amount to more than it was. Same with the lack of response from the rest of the players yesterday for his goal. I dunno which of those goal celebrations it was, but in one of them I remember him looking back to see which of his team-mates were joining him and all the players in red behind him were walking the other way to reset for the kick-off.

I haven't noticed any of our other players' goal celebrations recently to compare, so maybe they're just not going too mad for all the goals and it isn't just Herrera's. It did strike me as odd though.

I've seen it mentioned in here in the last few pages, and I'd agree that the team spirit seems to be waning a little. It is still night and day compared to last season, but the honeymoon period has seemed to worn off a bit with the players, and not just the fans.

I wasn't the biggest fan of them at the time, but earlier in the season there were a spate of selfies regularly posted here and on reddit featuring Herrera, Mata, DDG, and other players. We were joking about a Spanish mafia developing at the club. Those selfies seem to have died-off the last month or two, or is it that they just aren't posted as much now? I'm not on twitter so wouldn't know unless they were posted here or on reddit.

Can't remember what game it was but they scored first and just simply got the ball and kicked off again.

Think they are as frustrated as we are

surely this is not the weekend to be posting that video?? Or are you informing us that Uniteds loss to a poor Swansea side on saturday was just your way of giving to the anfield "charity"?

Just found good highlights of the goal. From the footage only Rooney, Blind and I think RVP went out to congratulate him. Fellaini, Di Maria, Shaw and McNair walked quite slowly. None of them looking particularly happy.

    http://www.lastminutegoals.org/swansea-city-vs-manchester-united-premier-league/

Around the 5.00 mark on first video.

Weird one really. In terms of other goals, everyone went pretty mad when Smalling scored against Burnley last week. Checked the Preston game there when Herrera scored, a few ran out to him and then Young and I think Rooney ushered him back, maybe its nothing after all.

that nani goal gets better and better every time i watch it, yet more depressing at the same time.

imagine what would happen if Valencia would try a shot from 35 yards out with his left leg????

    Very depressing alright.

If Nani was given the same opportunity as Valencia was given, we would be far better off right now.

Still waiting for the "defining" moment of this team, the performance to "turn the corner". Was waiting all last season and it never came, worried it might be the same this time round.

The defeat at the weekend was coming on reflection, insepid performances week in week out, was bound to catch us out.

Sunderland at home this weekend. Sunderland are a shambolic team, they are properly rubbish. They have a terrible manager who would blame shifting techtonic plates if his team lost and questions were raised about him.

We need to get back on track with a win and Sunderland is the perfect opportunity. Confidence needs to be rebuilt, and performances improved rapidly if we want to make this top 4 spot.

Might also be an opportunity to put Di Maria on the bench and take him out of the firing line. Being utterly hopeless for a worrying amount of time now. I'd drop Di Maria for Januzaj, Fellaini for Mata, McNair for Rafael/Valencia and Falcao in instead of RVP.

Going to this game so i hope to god its a good performance, but if we cant look good against a terrible Sunderland team i dont think we can get top 4.

And when we beat Sunderland there will be a lot of people who will think everything is ok again, who will point to unbeaten runs and claim that we are just in transition and that everything is fine, that we can get to the holy grail of top four!!!

Its actually horrifying how far expectations have fallen at this club.

My kingdom for a team of

    DDG
    Raf---Smalling
    Rojo
    Shaw
    Herrera----Blind
    Di Maria
    Mata
    Januzaj
    Rooney

Would even be interested to see how Herrera would do in Di Marias position, with him taking Januzaj's spot and Fellaini in the middle with Blind.

Its called realism. Anyone who was expecting a title bid this season was delusional.

Great team, but Young in for Januzaj on current form.

Whats the deal with Raf anyway, LVG just not fancy him?! Supprised he didn't even get any time in the reserves. On his day he's one of the best full backs in the league.

Sometimes watching united lately is like watching u12's play. 1 player gets the ball and the rest charge up the pitch. There is no structure to the team and no space to run into

There is quite a difference between expecting a serious title challenge and settling for the tripe served up all of this season.

With the players we have available we should be cantering into top four, instead the likes of Rooney, Di Maria, Van Persie, Mata and Herrera can barely string two passes together. Its actually quite an achievement to have so talented a forward line looking so inept.

I fail to see what this philosophy of LVG actually is.

If Rodgers came out with that nonsense he would rightly be laughed at on here, yet here we are, over 6 months into the season, and not one descernable improvement in the team. We had the excuse that he was late into the job, that he was suffering from lots of injured players, players taking time to understand the system.

What we have got is a team totally incapable of any type of slick, one touch passing, devoid of any creativity or flair. All our 'best' players are totally failing to perform. At what stage do people start to question whether LVG has any idea what to do.

I'm all for taking time, but at this stage, with 2/3rds of the season gone, I can't work out what he has done better with the team. If I could a t least see what he is trying to achieve, what this great philosophy actually is supposed to be about.

Sure he makes a nice press conference and seems to believe in himself, but he still doesn't know what system he wants, doesn't seem to know what players he wants, and doesn't seem to know what way the players are to play when he does pick them.

His major contribution this season seems to be sending Fellani up top?

Rodgers turned Liverpool season around. Koeman has done great with Southampton. Even Spurs are going pretty well. I know we sit 4th, but we have a very tough run of games, against teams that are actually decent coming up and based on the way we are playing at the moment we could be 10 points off 4th by the time that run is over.

It is a managers number one job to get the best out the players he has and LVG has singularly failed to do that.

I'm not calling for his head, but I would like to see even a small bit of improvement. I think LVG needs to explain WTF is is actually trying to do. Simply waiting for the summer window is a sell out. Get on with the job at hand, the squad you have is more than capable than doing better than the dross they are currently 'entertaining' us with

If there's anything positive to be taken from the game, perhaps it's that Herrera will be seen as a regular starter from now on?

I was referring to the amount of game time Valencia got as a winger which was obvious when comparing him with Nani.

Criticising Valencia as a winger is completely appropriate considering how ineffective he is going forward and the amount of game time he was given in that position.

Also, Valencia has performed averagely as a fullback, and that is being generous IMO.
