    Just talking with a friend about the main thing about Xmas.........the dinner :D
    What do you have for your Xmas meal?
    What is your favourite part of the Xmas meal and what could you do without/or really love with it?

    Here's mine

    Turkey(white meat only)
    Ham (Boiled and not baked)
    Mashed Spuds(lashings of butter and salt on)
    Roasties
    Croquette potatoes
    Stuffing
    Sprouts
    Carrots
    Turnips
    Parsnip
    Mushy Peas(:eek: don't ask :P)
    Gravy(no thanks)
    Mustard for the ham.

    Desserts
    Trifle
    Xmas Cake
    Xmas Pudding
    Mince pies
    (of which I eat none)

    Dunno what Im having this year. Last year was free range chicken. Couldnt tell the difference between it and normal chicken.

    I didn't include drinks on mine as I don't drink much but it wouldn't be Xmas dinner without a Guinness :)
    I might have a couple of beers that night watching a movie when the kids are in bed.

    Big slices of white turkey meat
    Giant slab of baked ham
    Mound of mash
    Roast parsnips and baby onions
    Token croquette
    Big pile of baby carrots
    Slurry of parsley sauce on the ham
    Deluge of gravy on the potatoes

    Big helping of trifle topped with too many flakes
    Chocolate pudding with whipped cream

    Chocolates to keep me going until the sandwiches a couple of hours later.

    Last year we had a turkey. We usually go for turkey.

    This year we are keeping it low key. We don't usually do starters. For the main meal this year it will be a large chicken or salmon. My fave part of the dinner is the veg - carrots, parsnips, turnip, Brussels sprouts (my favourite), stuffing and gravy too.

    I usually look after desserts. I have the ice creams done and sitting in the freezer. I will add in jelly, dream topping, custard and cream in my food shop. On Xmas eve, I hope to visit a bakery to pick up some tarts and cake.

    A tub of sweets too - will be heros or celebrations.

    I'm the only drinker in the house (not that I drink often or much) but I'll probably go for the aldi own brand of baileys.

    Same here.
    The veg are my favourite part of the meal(apart from the horrendous mushy peas)
    I could eat a plate of sprouts dosed with cracked black pepper and just nicely smushy :o

    prawn cocktail for starters.. its just a tradition at this stage and we live close to the sea so its usually a nice treat (not the crappy defrosted kind)
    various cheese crackers, dry cured meats and wine

    turkey (stuffed ofc) - my mothers away this year and were cooking for ourselves so i suggested something different but nearly got nailed for it so, turkey it is! have to say im not overly keen on turkey but i love the sandwiches and leftovers for making soup in the days that follow.
    gravy.
    ham (boiled in cider, finished off in the oven with cloves/mustard/honey/sugar etc)
    mash
    roast spuds
    yorkshires
    stuffed roasted peppers with couscous/herbs and spices
    carrots and turnips, boiled and roasted
    celery (my mum has an obsession with celery)
    sprouts. para boiled and then fried with pine nuts
    broccoli
    cheese sauce (+cauliflower)
    bread sauce
    cranberry sauce

    for desert.. for anyone left standing.. usually a trifle or a christmas pudding fired up with some brandy and served with custard and/or cream

    As long as there are sprouts, roasties,mashed potatoes, stuffing and gravy on my plate, then I don't worry about the rest in terms of what type of meat.

    I have family members who have the "starters"
    Melon, prawn cocktail or soup.
    The stuffed peppers are an unusual addition

    I wouldn't enjoy the "main event" if I were to have that :(

    Yeah, we have ours at about 3-3.30. Anything earlier would be too soon after the fab fry up we have! Good food, everyone happy and healthy is all I want for Xmas. Simple mantra eh?!

    My first christmas away from home was at my exes and they had dinner at 1pm, they made stuffing with just breadcrumbs and onions and when I asked to be passed the cranberry sauce, they had none!

    Everything about that dinner was wrong.

    my parents have been seperated for years.. so christmas dinner was always a bit of a touchy subject.. we agreed that the siblings would have a big fry up at da's and we'd have dinner later at mums house. after a few trial rounds of this (year before last we force fed ourselves christmas dinner at 11pm!..) we finally settled on having the fry on the christmas eve :)

    I feel the same. It didn't help when I was being told it wasnt any old chicken, it was free range! Hoping this year is a bit more traditional.

    Could probably taste more freedom on an american chicken.

    Nah to be honest my Xmas dinner is as follows:
    • Turkey with golden brown crispy skin that has been marinated in it's own meat juice (slow cooked)
    • Roosters shhpuds ;)
    • Roasted potatoes cooked in meat juice
    • Parsnip and carrots
    • Brussel sprouts (can't forget)
    • Bacon
    • Small bit of pork
    • Cauliflower cheese
    And the part to too it all of: *drum roll*
    Gravy mixed with the juice from all the meat :)

    Desert: trifle, cake or whatever sweets are about .

    My plan this year for the grocery shop is to go into town the weekend before Xmas and pick up some supplies from also and lidl.

    On Xmas eve morning, visit s bakery for tarts and a cake before accompanying my mother to a grocery shop which will hopefully be nearly done on my part.

    Turkey, ham, stuffing and gravy then I'm happy.My Mam tends to boil the **** out of veg so I polity avoid :D I'll go for desert if it's black Forrest or apple pie and cream...if not champagne will do.

    2pm for us, 2.30pm at a push. It's Christmas lunch.

    I always have to nap afterwards. Postprandial somnolence is a issue with me (if I eat a big lunch at work I fight to stay awake in front of my computer in the afternoon for example), but at night at least it feels like the right time to be sleepy! A big meal in the daytime on the other hand feels wrong in a way. But I wouldn't want to wait any later for me Christmas din dins!

    I know of people who have dinner well into the evening. 4pm, 5pm, 6pm or later!

    Dinner around 1pm to 2pm.

    Do most of the farm work before dinner, get dinner, have a rest, and then do any farm work that has to be done in the evening, be finished by 6pm.

    Normal Christmas dinner but I have to work around it. Just hope no cow or heifer decides to calve in the middle of mine....

    My dogs get a mini version of the dinner all mashed up. They love their Xmas dinner :)

    One of my earliest memories of Christmas is having turkey and brussel sprouts at my grandparents. As I grew up, we always had turkey and brussel sprouts. Turkey and brussel sprouts were all the rage for a few years when I was in college. Then, through the Celtic tiger years we went all sophisticated and had turkey and brussel sprouts. Last year we had turkey and brussel sprouts. This year we were wondering what to have and settled on turkey and brussel sprouts, but agreed that next year we would definitely have turkey and brussel sprouts.After that, who knows. My favourite though is turkey with brussel sprouts.

    Turkey

    Sage and oniom stuffing
    Sausage stuffing
    Roasted carrots + parsnips
    Peas
    Sprouts
    Colcannon
    Mash
    Roasters
    Gravy
    Broccoli

    Then a Christmas cake that my gran is making, chocolate cake, Christmas pudding, and ice cream.

    Out of that, I'll probably eat some ham, turkey, carrots, parsnips and peas. :pac: feckin' hate Christmas dinner.

    After that, I'm going to my OH's mam's house to get drunk.

    Vegetable soup (about an hour before main course)

    Turkey (I prefer the tastier dark meat)
    Ham.
    Mashed spuds.
    Roast spuds.
    Sprouts (cooked in juice of the ham)
    Carrots.
    Peas.
    Stuffing.
    Gravy (optional, sometimes I do and sometimes i don't).

    Rarely have a dessert.
    Mug of tea.
