I asked VWCS about safelock, alarm & keyless and was informed via email that "To get the alarm on the GTI, WD1 needs to be ordered. However, you are right that 4F2 should be available on the GTI for keyless. It is the same price as 4I3 at €445."
I wonder if the product guide will be updated to reflect this and clear up this confusion.

I'm looking at placing an order this weekend and this is something of interest. I'm definitely speccing the alarm and would ideally like keyless ,though it's not a dealbreaker TBH.
It seems there is no reason why they can't offer "Keyless with SAFELOCK", but it just isn't on the configuration list. - Should I just be saying to the dealer "I want to add option '4F2' and expect to pay €445 for it".

Has anybody had much luck with requests like this?

Yes. Every time I've ordered one (I've ordered a few :D), I've found something that I'd like to spec that isn't on the official Irish product guide. With the R it was the "driver profile" button... which they subsequently made standard.

You just need a friendly dealer to do a bit of legwork for you. Arm him with as much info as possible - i.e. the correct product codes and he'll ask the product guys in HQ.

Joe would a 162 Highline in the old model with more spec be a nicer car than a 171 Demo Highline with less extras? Would it be a better buy?

    Cheers.

I would say so yes. Unless you've a particular want for the Active info dash, the older car would have a far better spec.

I remember you saying that all right it's for my brother, cheers!

I'm glad to hear this too. I asked VWCS about keyless and safelock and asked about something that isn't on the Irish product guide. They were happy to give the code and cost so.
I'm planning on ordering this week/weekend too. I think the dealer is doing some work to figure out those codes and their availability.

Can I ask what deposit people have been asked for when ordering?

Lots of stuff is back on the options list that was standard on the pre facelift highline, reverse camera, high beam assist, 18's, keyless entry.

The facelift has immediately make the 7 look dated though IMO.

Wha? I think not. Arguably for the GTI it has - a very little bit. But it's much of a muchness in the Highline downwards. On those cars that don't have xenon/ LED lights or rear leds, it's really a case of spot the difference. In fact, the outgoing Highline has a better looking rear end as it had the GTI rear leds. The new car is back to standard looking rear lamps.

I think only a true anorak would tell the pre-FL and FL cars apart. I think most on here would agree I'm in the anorak category and I would definitely have to look twice to be sure.

OK, who's this JoeBrosan guy who's posting and then deleting posts again?

Ah I'd disagree :pac: the way the exhaust tips are incorporated into the rear bumper instead of an unrefined pipe poking out through a cut-out in the bumper, the way the radar is now in the badge and there isn't a big gaping square hole in the front grille, the shape of the headlights.

Generally im not a fan of mid life facelifts but it's as if they intentionally made the pre face lift a bit unfinished to allow room for the 7.5

We have a 162 highline and don get me wrong it's still a smart looking car but every time I pass a 7.5 I am filled with want and I'm no Golf enthusiast.

    Lot of things deleted.

You'd be hard pressed to tell a Mk7 and Mk7.5 apart in the lesser models, your average joe would have to be shown the differences. It's mild as facelifts go.

The headlights are the same shape :pac:

I do like the new LED lights / DRL's - front and rear - but you only get those on the GTI/D upwards unless you pay big bucks to spec them on a Highline.

There's also some aspects of the facelift that make it clearly look like a "facelift". The Active Info Display and the new Infotainment systems don't look like they belong in the dash imo. Clearly the MK7 dash was designed before this tech was available and now they've fudged it into the "old" dashboard. They did the same thing with the Scirocco... that car has bits and pieces from the MK7 cars stuck into a MK5 Golf dash!
I expect in the MK8, it will look more "resolved" if that makes sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

They are the same shape but the lamp clusters have different diffusers internally which match the shape of the diffusers in the rear lamps which is tasteful but probably wasted on most people as you say.

I'd agree on the dash though, its clear that the afterthoughts were just that. I think the active display looks weird in every model though, Tiguan, Passat etc but the flat panel infotainment does look like it does come to a very abrupt stop beside the hard plastic of the dash.

Still nicer than an i30 interior, however!

Yeah... the Active display looks a bit strange when the car's powered off. Its like a big hole in the dash. I think they've some work to do to in future iterations to make it look a bit more "alive" and less like a laptop screen. The Audi equivalent also appears to be more configurable with a higher res screen too.

The new Polo's dash already looks like it's better integrated than the mishmash 7.5's effort.

When is the scirocco replacement coming?

There hasn't been anything that would tempt me out of my own car but a 4motion scirocco R might.

Wouldn't hold your breath. At least 12-18 months, possibly alongside the next Golf...

I sometimes get a jerk/hesitation going from 2nd to 3rd when really pushing on. Very occasional - almost feels like a wheel hop. I've never mentioned it to the dealer as it happens (or I notice it) so rarely. Is that what you mean ?

Yep- never seemed to noticed it before but your correct 2nd to 3rd when giving it the beans !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,554 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Oh, maybe we're giving it too much beans so!

    1.5tsi engine

I contacted vw re the above engine and this is the reply I got

    Dear Mr. xxxx,

Thank you for contacting Volkswagen Customer Care.

In regards to your query, currently Volkswagen Ireland do not have any plans to offer that engine size in our market.

We are sorry we do not have a positive response for you.

anyway in Germany a highline version of the 1.5tsi commands a premium of €1,500 over the 1.4tsi which if offered here would pitch the 1.5tsi north of €31,000 at least

you kind of wonder why in the mark 7.5 they are prevailing with the old 1.4 tsi which doesn't even have ACT which the outgoing model had. in essence the mark 7 1.4tsi is more frugal with lesser emissions than the 1.4 in mark 7.5.

I was talking to a dealer about this and expressed my surprise that they weren't offering Wolfsburg's much-vaunted new 1.5 TSI engines in the lineup. He said that the engines were coming in too expensive and VW Ireland weren't interested in bringing them in as a result. You would think it would take very little work for someone in VW Ireland to make an option available for those who wanted it, but there you go!

Its already offered in Audi A3 in Ireland replacing the 1.4TFSI - surprised its not available on the Golf, unless they have 1.4TFSI stock they are trying to shift for July first.

Imagine paying more for a set of Santiago's than a set of Pretoria's would cost you. :P

What's a sensible % discount to reasonably expect on a new GTI?
I imagine i'm not in an overly strong position, buying made-to-order, trading in a 9-year old car and availing of PCP.
Does the money tend to come off the sticker price or through a more generous trade-in?

In my experience, Irish dealers don't talk about the discount off the top when you are trading something in. They will focus on what they are giving you for your old car and the cost to change - most likely to make you feel better.

E.g. Against a 45k Golf, they might tell you that they are giving you 10k for your trade in. 35k to change. Realistically they are giving you ~7-8k for your car. The 2-3k is the discount room they have on the new car.

This generally makes you the customer feel better lol. They've not insulted your old car, you feel you're getting a good price for it, etc.

Some people would prefer if the real trade price being offered and the real discount that's available was more transparent but really it doesn't matter how you slice the cake. The real figure that matters is the Cost To Change.
