Thanks gents for the advice. I have the wheel booked in for this Friday with Collins Engineering in Bray. Will post a pic when it has been fixed.

Did anyone get confirmation on pricing / availability of the GTI PP yet?

Anyone know what the going rate for activating app connect is with the main dealers? are VW Ireland offering it for free?

I got "mates rates" at the dealers but still paid €250 odd.

I rang two dealerships today one is looking for €168 and the other dealer isn't charging me for it.

Rang another dealership and they're charging €300. My car is 161.

I find that surprising. Are you sure they even know what you're asking for? VW Germany charge 200+ for the licence key - the key that is needed to enable it. So unless VW Germany have stopped charging for it, I can't see how a dealer would do it for free.
That and it does involve labour to do it (10 minutes effort, but still...)

It was added to the tech pack for 162 alright, but that's with it factory fitted. Retro-fitting it to a car that doesn't have it from factory is a different, more expensive, ballgame.

Yeah it sounds wrong. But I rang twice and spoke at length about Apple Car Play and the activation key required, they informed me that its app-connect that offers Apple Car Play and they need to plug it in to activate. Car is booked in for Friday week, I really don't want a long trek to be told the key is at a cost of x.

Plug it in yes - but they will need the licence key. It actually comes in a DVD-like box, just a piece of paper with a code on it that VW charge well over €200 for. The licence key is one-time use only per car, so unless things have changed very recently you will be charged for it - if they even have the keys in stock that is!

I wouldn't be surprised if they ordered in keys to put on cars in stock for the 162 offer or similar and have them sitting around gathering dust.

I guess that's possible alright, but main dealers aren't clued in on this stuff at all, so I'd be skeptical.

Something must have changed, I phoned twice and spoke with two different individuals within the service dept. Both confirmed that app-connect is free. However when I called a garage much closer to me, they're looking for €168 (VAT maybe added to this figure, which brings it a little over €200)

App Connect is meant to retail at €299 supplied and coded.

I can't picture any dealer giving it for free unless they have no idea what they are talking about. As pointed out, it is just coded in but you need to buy an activation code from VW, the price of which varies a little model to model. I wouldn't think they will be giving you a free app connect that was in excess from the 162 period because these were only provided on request for specific chassis numbers built within a certain range but supplied during the 162 reg period, that and why would any dealer give away something worth a couple of hundred quid.

If your car is 161 it may not even be possible to code in. Look at your head unit and the four vertical buttons along the left side of the touch screen, if the bottom button says "phone" it's possible to code it in but if the bottom button says "mute" it can not be retro coded at all.

I'd really be worried if you've priced it with a culchie dealer that they are just wrong.

I think Irish cars from 152 are all compatible - generally speaking, because virtually all Irish cars came with Discover Nav, and all versions of Discover nav mib2 are compatible. There was some issues with the non nav version alright, hence a lot of confusion in other cars such as the Passat.

I'd be double checking before I make the trip anyhow.

After 18 months of being extra careful a low kerb in Tesco car park got the better of me this am. Can anyone recommend a place in south Dublin/Wicklow for diamond cut alloy repair?

Personally, for that level of damage, I wouldn't dream of a diamond cut refurb. Got mine done around a year ago and there is plenty white worm there now. Collins did it.

If you get white worm fair enough but that's very superficial.

So the wheel you got refurbed has coroded? How about the other 3?

OEM 3 fine, the refurbished one has white worm despite not being damaged. Also the black paint chips far easier than OEM.

I have a spare refurb in the shed and has white worm despite being sealed and not used.

I just don't think the OEM lacquer is easily doable. You are trying to get it to stick to a highly polished surface. To be fair its still fine, you need to be cleaning it to notice.

That's very disappointing to hear, I dropped the wheel in Yesterday so it's probably already done. I'll call them this am to see. When I dropped it in, there were four other MK7 GTI wheels after being refurbed for someone else.

I'd say every time a Wheel Refurb place see's a new model of car with diamond cut alloys, they lick their lips!

The sooner manufacturers stop with that crap the better imo.

It will look great and you might be lucky. They gave me all the talk about OEM tech finish etc. But it's only a wheel. If mine give me any more trouble I'm just going to get them redone in anthracite power coat.

Howdy! I'm looking to get a Mk 7.5 GTI very soon and have a couple of questions based on the online configurator.

I'll be trading in a 151 Highline Golf and when I specced the GTI online I was surprised that there's an option for an "extra alarm". Should the GTI not come with the best of the best as standard in terms of security? What exactly does the extra alarm do?

What are the commonly ticked extras in your opinion? I reckon I'll get the alarm, the Brescia alloys (I'm not a huge fan of the Milton Keynes yet) and potentially the Dynaudio system. Is moving from 18" to 19" alloys going to make a significant difference to driving or it won't really be noticeable? Would anyone who got Dynaudio get it again on their next car? Adding any more extras brings me a bit too close to Golf R prices for my liking!

    Thanks,
Long time VW GTI Configurator User

Lol. Extra alarm. There's no alarm on the car at all. No deadlocks either. Only Golf that has a standard alarm is the R. So yes, I would certainly spec that. I'd consider keyless too but for some reason the configurator doesn't allow you spec both alarm + keyless. I would question VW on that, see can they work around it.

The standard 18's are stink imo so the 19' upgrade is a must. That said I'm not mad on either of the 19" options either. With 19's you might want to consider the adaptive chassis.

I've heard dynaudio is a great feature. I love my sound myself and I don't have dynaudio but I do find the standard speakers pretty decent.

Hi guys, going to view a 151Gtd, how do I know if the alarm is in the spec? Any one know where I can find spec list so I can see how may extras it has? It has leather seats, reverse camera, radar. It seems fairly well up on spec.

It'll have this button inside the drivers door on the B pillar.

Not alone is there no alarm but VW dropped deadlocking on the Mk7 so when specing an alarm make sure that 'Safelock' is included( I think there's 2 options for alarms' 1 with Safelock the other without) this may force keyless entry option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,371 ✭✭✭TheAnalyst_

Dynaudio is a must if you listen to music.
Keyless entry for the money is essential.

How common is no alarm or deadlocks on a car these days? Seems a bit ridiculous when people are getting cars upwards of €30k? I didn't actually know this and wasn't told by the dealer nor did I have an option to spec one. Just got keyless entry without Safelock but no option of Safelock anywhere else on the Golf Highline.

Also is there any little features that you guys like on the Golf or were pleasantly surprised by? I can't get a hold of a manual online to read the features (and I'm not expecting delivery for another 3 months) but from what I've gathered online some features are the passenger window tilting to reverse, rear wiper going off to reverse, cruise control resuming after tapping the accelerator etc. I also hear the intermittent wipers stop when you're at a red light. Any other little features on the Golf?
