Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

If ya want one. Here is last years thread for those interested. Just do the same this year. Post yer name here and come the time, if the interest is enough, we'll kick it off.

Might increase some numbers though. Some are too easy got, and might include some deer. Doesn't matter if you cannot fill the table. Wouldn't be much fun if everyone could.

You can sing that. Only for shotie starting this thread i'd never have copped it.
................ not getting a trophy for it :P
The lads last year were nearly not getting one either. It was a cluster <insert expletive> . I ordered the trophies when the comp ended. Between loosing my order, taking the money for it twice & having to sort that, then ringing me to tell me the ones i ordered 6 weeks ago (at this stage) were no longer available, and then finally getting the wrong ones delivered i was well pissed, and it looked bad. Not only the trophies, but the constant excuses for someone else's mistakes.

So this year i'm not going with the names on them. I'll order well in advance, get the title done (you know "Boards.ie Mixed Bag Comp 2014/22015") and have them delivered. Then when the comp is over & the winner is announced i'll bring them to a local engraver to have the name engraved. Well that's the plan.

looking at last years table the pheasant and woodcock are low maybe up them to 5 or a bit higher as every one (well a lot) are/is going to be shooting/hunting pheasant and woodcock any way come november .just my thoughts

I'm thinking something along the lines of:

    Game | Amount |
    Pheasant |
    7
    |
    Duck |
    10
    |
    Snipe |
    10
    |
    Woodcock |
    7
    |
    Wood Pigeon |
    25
    |
    Fox |
    10
    |
    Magpie |
    8
    |
    Crow |
    20
    |
    Grey Crow |
    10
    |
    Grey Squirrel |
    3
    |
    Mink |
    3
    |
    Rabbit |
    30
    |
    Doe/Hind |
    3
    |
    Stag/Buck/Prícket |
    5
    |
    Total |
    151
    |

    1. Too much?
    2. Too much of certain species?
    3. Not enough?
    4. Right total, but wrong amounts?

Also thinking of introducing a point system, but only for certain game. IOW getting a pre-selected species, in any amount, is extra points? No one will know this only me. I'll take part, but be excluded from the prize (like that is a worry based on last years result :D).

Forgot I had no dog this year :(
It'll pure luck that I run into a pheasant or woodcock.
But I feel lucky so cass out wild boar on it aswell :) jk

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 198 ✭✭strangles

Think 8 deer might be a bit of an ask for most lads on here as most just shoot a couple for their own freezer in the season ...........

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,627 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

I understand and agree. I normally shoot between 3 to 10 a year.

However the comp is designed to challenge lads, not give them a target that can be easily filled. Like Dodderanglers's comments on pheasants & woodcock (plus his Boar suggestion). I'm light on foxes, rabbits and duck. So these are a problem for me. I have wild pigs/boar though and plenty of deer. So whats good for one will not be for another.

It just seems each year it's easier for people to fill certain quotas so my thinking is give everyone something that is a non runner. If they fill the rest, and others do too, then it'll push you to find and fill the hard species. Plus it's all a bit of fun.

not having a dig or anything cass .just going by last year final table you can see what quotas where filled by most lads. take rabbits for example only 2 lads filled the quota for them so maybe 30 might be too much id leave them at 15.
id leave the below at something like you have done, as they where the most filled reached quotas by lads last year
    Pheasant 7
    Duck 10
    Snipe 10
    Woodcock 7

id leave the rest the same then as last years table as lads found it hard to reach these quotas
    such as below

    Wood Pigeon 15
    Fox 7
    Magpie 8
    Crow 15
    Grey Crow 5
    Grey Squirrel 3
    Mink 3
    Rabbit 15

im just going on what i seen from last years table .just to note im happy to go with what every the quotas are and cant wait:D just would hate to see lads loose interest half way through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 672 ✭✭✭ace86

Here is my proposal for numbers:

    Pheasant 5
    Duck 7
    Snipe 8
    Woodcock 8

I wouldn't have great numbers of rabbits and woodpigeon and grey squirrel and I don't shoot deer either but like alot of lads here some will have alot of one and none of the other I suppose.I'm happy with all the rest to be honest.

what way does the list work is that total for each week or have you to reach the numbers over the season.

I'm sure a side comp can be ran for the longest bird. As you said a picture with the gun, tape measure, username, and something like that days newspaper or other form of proof it was shot this year.

If lads want i can run it, but i'll keep the results to myself until the end of the season and announce a winner then. Or if lads prefer i'll stick up a second table with the username and bird length for all to see so lads can try again for a longer one.

It's up to ye lads, it's your competition.
    blackpearl wrote: »

Each week, usually Friday, i'll go back through the pictures posted and after checking they meet the requirements (picture, gun in picture, and piece of paper with username & date on it) i'll mark down what they shot. After tallying up all the users for that week i'll update the table and place them in order of the highest amount for each week.

As the comp goes on the positions will change and then by the end of the comp the person with the highest total amount, wins. If there is a draw i normally go with the person to reach the highest amount first, however after thinking it over that could be a bit unfair as one lad might be able to get more of a certain species than the lad he drew with so (meaning one lad could get up to 80 very quickly then slow off for the rest of the comp, while the lad he drew with slowly builds all season) i'm introducing a point system. I'll assign points to each species. In the case of a draw whomever has the highest point count will win it.

The point system will be known only to me, and for this reason (like every other year) i will not be able to win the comp, but can take part for the craic.

Yup. When placing an entry you post a picture which includes:
    • A gun in the picture
    • A piece of paper with your username written on it
    • The date written on the piece of paper

Then under the picture just write up what is in it. Sometimes the pictures are not clear for either amount or species so if you shot 2 duck, a fox and 3 crows you post the picture and under write:

    2 duck
    1 fox
    3 crows

All this is done so it makes it easier for me to see exactly what you are entering (and i don't have to go PMing lads to verify) and the pictures need the gun because we have had instance where a picture has been taken from the site and photoshopped to place a stick, club, axe, etc. in it. Making it look like we're savages, and that the animal was not humanely/instantly killed.
    djflawless wrote: »

I've stuck up a poll there lad, so anyone can simply vote and by the time the comp is ready to start we'll have our answer.

so really the point system only comes into it in the event of a draw would i be correct or have i missed it altogether .

will the longest tail comp be run for the 1st or will it be ran for the hole season ? if for the hole season i think a second table would be easyer to work with and be easyer for lads to see who has what lenght bird etc .just my thoughts.

as far as longest bird, id be calling it just for the 1st.just for banter, same as a gun club.
although it could make it unfair for a fella not able to get out on the 1st.
    maybe just the weekend?

I'll leave it to yourselves lads. I don't want to make the poll too complicated by adding a load of options, or have the longest tail issue lost in the mixed bag discussion (or vice versa) so whatever ye decide (assuming lads want the comp) will be what we run with.

My own opinion is if it's just for sh*ts and giggles then the weekend sounds fine. If it's something you'd like to run as a comp with a prize then it may be all season.
