A lot of online fans clamour to see it make a comeback. There's often echoes of people asking for it to return. Even on Raw just gone, the red-hot Dean Ambrose made a reference to it on prime time television. I am, of course, talking about the Cruiserweight Division. Is it as good as people remember? Is it a case of rose tinted glasses? Well let us pit all former champions against each other and see what type of talent there was. Everybody that held these titles in either the WWE or WCW will get their chance to be call the best Cruiserweight Champion of all but it's all of you who will decide.

I have included every individual who has held either the Light Heavyweight Championship in the WWF (now WWE) and have done the same for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship, which became re-christened the WWE Cruiserweight Championship in 2001. That's explained below :
    7920230_orig.jpg

*We have a total of 48 champions in this tournament, 16 of which have held a title on more than one occasion. These multiple champions receive a bye into Round 2 where they will be joined by the 16 winners from Round 1.

*First champion to receive 3 votes will progress

*All draws are made using a random number generator

I remember one vaguely as the lad who danced with Disco Inferno and was named after Berlin while the other from his X division exploits with just a lil bit of ECW and teaming with Jamie Noble thrown in there.

My memory says Kid Kash was better so he gets my vote

We say auf wiedersehen to Alex 'Berlyn' Wright as Kid Kash goes through in a whitewash.

There might be one or two more of them in Round 1 due to WCW's early mid 1990's champions I'm afraid but keep the faith if you can.

Never heard of the other guy so Crash for me

Crash Holly, not familiar with Brad Armstrong's career.

Armstrong goes out as I realise that there was actually a WCW Light Heavyweight Championship before the Cruiserweight title came along. There was only 4 champions ever and one of them in Brad Armstrong is out.
Never heard of the other guy so Crash for me

He's actually Road Dogg's brother. Worked commentary for WWE's version of ECW for a short stint. On the Road Dogg thing, he even did a lame version of it in WCW as Buzzkill.

    Disco Inferno. I hate Hornswoggle.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Moneymaker

Disco Inferno. He had a string of good matches in WcW, as did most of the light heavyweights of that era.

  • Registered Users Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

Disco for me also. Hornswoggle was a disgracefully sad end to the division.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,974 ✭✭✭✭chopperbyrne

Definitely Disco if only for his attempts to join the Wolfpac.

  • Registered Users Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

The leprechaun doesn't make it of the blocks and loses out to the dancing fool himself, Disco Inferno.

Hardy, I loved his V.1 gimmick

  • Registered Users Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

Matt Hardy for me too. The V1 delusional stuff went great with his cruiser reign. I remember him trying to shed weight in the sweat suit and all. A great character based champion.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,974 ✭✭✭✭chopperbyrne

Matt Hardy the overweight champion. Probably the most memorable WWF Cruiserweight Champion.

  • Registered Users Posts: 328 ✭✭Griever931

Matt Hardy, I enjoyed his V1 character.

Evan Karagias runs out of courage as the elder Hardy makes the cut ahead of him. Next match is our last bout of the night....

Yep, Jerry here too. How the he'll is Oklahoma a cruiserweight? Lookit the size of 'im!

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 51,050 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

    Jerry Lynn for me too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

Oklahoma was basically a rib on Jim Ross in WCW played by Vince Russo stooge Ed Ferrera. It was in extremely poor taste as he mocked JR's Bell's Palsy by talking out of the side of his mouth in a ridiculous Southern accent. Ferrera and Russo caught a lot of heat for it, and rightly so. Jerry Lynn on the other hand was a fine wrestler and advances on unscathed. Next up is an all Japanese affair from the early days of the Cruiserweight division.

Liger without a doubt a real great who should go far in this

Jushin Liger again because I know a lot more about him

The seemingly ageless Liger thunders past Otani easily. A lot of squash matches in Round 1. Will this be one also?
