Something odd is happening. I did the trick where you run wuauclt.exe through CMD to get it to start installing it for you.
It downloaded it all for me and did the whole 'preparing installation' It got to the end and is now saying

    'Check your PC before Upgrading
Before installing Windows 10 Insider Preview, Something needs your attention'
There's a button to 'Check you PC'

    Is this normal?

EDIT: When I click on 'check your PC' it just brings me back out to the optional windows update screen.
This is exactly what happens on my desktop.

Yeah. Doesn't seem like it wants to install for me at all. Not showing in my updates at all. Just 3 optional updates.

Same thing is happening here too

I decided to install the 3 optional updates just in case and now it's saying 'Downloading Windows 10 -Preparing for Installation'
Edit: After reboot it's now offering me 6 important updates. Very odd.

    Anybody install from the ISO?
Can anyone confirm if it's possible to skip the Product Key step and activate later?

I'd like to try the 32-bit version just to test one application.

You could do that in Vista, 7 and 8 so I don't see why not you can't on 10.

Yes, they're all there, but you'll need to reset them to be the default apps rather than the MS equivalents again.

Browsing history, bookmarks etc are still there too.

I've just spotted something quite worrying in the Settings under "Choose how updates are delivered". By default it is set up so that Windows update will download updates not only from MS servers but other PC's in your own network, which may be a good idea, but potentially also from other PC's on the Internet! So you're consenting to your PC being used in some huge P2P network for updates, using your upload bandwidth in the process. Luckily you can turn this feature off completely, or just enable it for PC's on the local network, although presumably if I'm for example using WiFi in someone else's house this will kick in too, unless I specifically set that network as metered. All sounds a bit dodgy to me and a potential security risk, so I'm turning it off, thanks.

It's not a security risk, as the packages still have to be signed by Microsoft. It's also a method used by other programs and OS's for a while now.

I will, however, point out that that people on a metered broadband connection should probably turn it off, as depending on how much you seed, you could burn through your upload limit.

For everyone else though, it should be totally fine.

If you think that's a security risk, wait until you hear about WiFi-Sense.

That's already turned off, don't worry!

Ha, it's not that I'm optimistic about security, I just find that a lot of the computer users I deal with are so, so pessimistic about some things, and then totally and utterly ambivalent to other things just as much.

I had one person who turned off automatic updates on Windows because he "didn't like American corporations knowing too much about him", and yet used Chrome with a signed in Google account. I almost passed out from laughing so hard.

My internet is so awful a lot of times I'm praying to hit 1 Mbps! 1.6 would be a treat :pac:

Encounter things like that all the time. At some point you just have to give up on expecting logic around computers from the wider public.

Just done the upgrade to Windows 10. Went to check for the update, and found 11 optional updates only. Tried them, they failed and it asked me to restart. When i did it came up that Windows 10 was downloaded and ready to be installed. I hit "start" and away it went. Took about an hour from start to finish.

Has completely changed the look of the PC. Have to relearn it all again. The 3gb download turned into 13gb for the entire upgrade. Not a major concern. Plus i'm not in the least bit tech savvy, so whatever happens, happens. I only finished 10 minutes ago but can see some improvements. Mail for a start. All mail accounts now under one mail setting, proper start menu, etc.

I'm a basic computer user so some of the improvements may be lost on me, and it'll take a while to discover them all. Time will tell i suppose.

Failed updates on both our machines here from 8.1 and 7
    Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro

    Installation date: ‎30/‎07/‎2015 12:55

    Installation status: Failed

    Error details: Code 80240020

    Update type: Important

Install the next version of Windows.

Deleted c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download contents and retried this time download size was twice what it was on my 1st attempt just over 5gb failed with the same message. Noticed the action center was nagging to be clicked and asking for my current password to be entered.

Installed and running smoothly so far, haven't seen any issues. Kudos to MS on this one :)

I tried a few scenarios this morning.

Tried to install the ISO using a Win 7 key and it wouldn't accept the key. Skipped the step but later it wouldn't activate either.

Re-installed Win7, did the upgrade and the key activated. Just about to format the drive and retry the same key from the ISO.

I wonder if the Win7 key has now been "upgraded" or unlocked for Win 10 activation.

no dont, it wont work, you have to use a MS tool for a clean install

try this tutorial from some guy on Reddit, I can confirm it works 100%

Grr...it's not giving me an option to get it at all. Been downloading every update available to kickstart it but it just tells me it's reserved. :(

Windows 7 all up to date. Checked 3 times. No sign of the "upgrade to windows 10" anywhere.

Upgraded desktop and laptop from 8.1 to 10 and none of them are activated and when I try nothing happens.

Looks like this is the way to go for those that aren't getting prompted to install it.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/3f0lcs/how_to_clean_install_100_explained_no_more/

Seems to be working for me at least. Might fail once it tries to reboot....

Not gonna bother doing a clean install like the link says to do.

My Surface Pro started downloading an update about 2 hours ago and its still only at about 40%. It better be Windows 10 after all that time
