Stupid Food Trends

I don't care how much protein is in it, quinoa does not taste good.

Does kale need to be in everything? Spinach tastes much better.

What other food trends need to die?

I eat pretty much anything, as long as it's served on a plate.

    Pulled pork.
Tasted it for the first time yesterday and thought the BBQ sauce it was covered in was sickly. Whole concept is done to death now.

    Gluten free bull****.

Genuine coeliacs must hate being lumped in with these gluten free frauds.

Though I suppose their selection has increased a lot as a result.

I can't keep up with food trends anymore. First they said fat was bad, eat more carbs. They scoffed at high protein low carb diets. Now they say eat more protein and less carbs and that fat is friendly and sugar is evil. *Sigh, make up your mind boffins, make up your minds.

Have to agree with gluten free. Most of the idiots don't even know what gluten is.

I love pulled pork, but it lives and dies by the sauce (and often the fixins').

    Theres bloody pulled pork everywhere

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I think part of the problem with a lot of the gluten free crowd is that they are really on a low-carb diet but don't want to say that, so they claim gluten free instead. That said, I know a lot of people who aren't celiac, but have autoimmune disorders or other long-term health issues who have experienced significant improvements in their health by going gluten free (and dairy free, in some cases).

I do know what gluten is. Gluten is a vague term. It’s something that’s used to categorize things that are bad. You know, calories, that’s a gluten. Fat, that’s a gluten. Gluten means bad sh** man, and I’m not eating it.

Serving food on wooden boards. This is a pet hate of mine. Has to be less hygienic than plates. Ruins dinner for me.

Also, steak on a stone. Must have been an accountant that came up with the notion of going to a restaurant & then cooking your own dinner, complete with the stink and heat and fat spatters. Trying to keep one eye on it while you are eating. Cooking tiny little pieces. It's all wrong & pointless.

Pulled pork like you get in KFC or most of the other places here is terrible. Tastes nothing like the american version.......yummy!

Drinks being served in jam jars. Usually in overpriced hipster places serving burgers, fried chicken and cheap cuts of steak. A glass works. Glasses are a great way of serving drinks.

I REALLY hate the trend of 'stretch your food' food like pulled pork, meatloaf, pot roast, or other forms of comfort food for people on a budget being sold in restaurants at 'regular' prices. Sorry, the whole point of these dishes is that you are using scraps or the cheapest cuts of meat and then filling them out with cheap grains and starches.

Wooden boards are definitely better for your knives, but I think the most hygienic way to manage them is to keep one for veg only and a different one for meat.

That said, wood seems totally impractical for restaurants - washing on high heat warps them and they have to be oiled regularly. Plus, wood tends to hold the smell from garlicky/onion-y foods. China seems much more practical, and the plates can be warmed before service.

Speaking of plates, the 'small plates' trend in restaurants is a total crock. It always ends up being less food for way more money by the time you order enough to feel satisfied.

Almond milk is AWESOME, especially for those of us who are ragingly lactose intolerant. But it is absolutely horrible for the environment, so I think I'm going to have to (reluctantly) give it up.

Absolutely the most horrendous thing I've tasted. It's so awful. Not like coconut at all and just basically tastes like Satan's anus. Avoid

Also, food trends of yesteryear that seem so stupid now are always good for a giggle:

    -Fondue
    -Nouvelle cuisine
-Breakfast rolls (though these are on the comeback!)

Wooden chopping boards are banned from commercial kitchens as they are porous so they absorb everything and anything you put on them, including bacteria.

    You got done there then!

Pork is sweet meat to begin with, it needs to be put with a really smokey BBQ sauce or hammered with spices before cooking and then left to soak up its own juices instead of using sauce. Don't know why people pay so much for it though, it's surprisingly easy and dead cheap to make at home.

I'd say gluten free (unless you have a need for it).

I was only taking about this yesterday. Why has pulled pork suddenly taken over the country? Every shop you go into is selling it. It's not like it's a new concept or anything, been around since the dawn of time.

    It's a protein.

What gets me the products without gluten are usually much more produced and full of crap than products with gluten. So people who don't have an intolerance (and there are people who really do have one) are actually eating worse crap.

Usually people who have real intolerance stick to rice and natural non gluten grains.

Gluten free bread is usually much worse for you than bread with gluten if you are a healthy person.

I'm addicted to coconut water at the minute, it's so yummy and it really feels very hydrating when you drink it. And almond milk is lovely on it's own, it's too thin for tea or coffee though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 642 ✭✭✭Bafucin

The most annoying food trend is people giving a **** about what others eat. Or and people who refuse to cook for me. I deserve it. I don't eat meat, craving it recently though apart from that I'll eat anything, I mean that. A lot of people simply like to try new things.

Whoever said steak on a stone is dead right. It's like a massive in-joke. I can imagine the chefs peaking through the divider at the kitchen entrance going "Here, Frank, they're after getting another one... Come here n have a look at this dope doing your job for ya!"
