The new Jag looks great, hopefully they won't release bland entry models as it will harm the image.

on the subject of competitors to the Germans, whatever happened with the Maserati Ghibli?
It had some fairly positive reviews when it debuted if I remember correctly, but has it been a sales success in the UK?

I've yet to see one over here, but that is hardly a surprise.
I had a Ghible roar past me 6 weeks ago outside Newry. I was driving in the typical Italian fashion when it went past so God only knows what speed it was doing.

Saw a Ghibli when I was in Prague last Christmas - it was parked (surprise!) in Prague's most expensive shopping street.

Car looked elegant but perhaps it lacked the road presence of, say, a BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, which is a rival.

Can't say that I have seen any Ghiblis on UK roads - maybe I need to hang around West London.

For all you Ghibli fan boys, here's Harry Metcalfe's (formerly of Evo magazine and now working for JLR) video review:

I think the facelifted XF is probably the best looking car on the road. Alright, the interior shows its age. The sportbrake is certainly the prettiest estate you can buy. Quite like the look of the XJ, c-pillar quirks, chrome inside aside. Love the F type. But the XE is as bland a product as Audi could produce. Really, really underwhelming. It's not ugly, but it could be a 6 year old design. The inside in particular is incredibly disappointing.

Previous XJ was a lovely looking car but it looked too retro for some. Current XJ design is "challenging" - I didn't like it when I first saw it at the Paris or Frankfurt motor show and still don't like it now. However, sales of the current XJ have been good.

In print edition of this week's Autocar, saw a snippet that Jaguar reckons that it will have to sell 90,000 XE cars to break even (on the R&D costs and the manufacturing costs for the model, I expect).

The snippet also pointed out the following:
    - Jaguar's total worldwide sales for the last financial year were only 80,000 (for the five years before then, annual total sales averaged only about 50,000 cars per year).
    - When the X-Type was in production, the largest number of units sold in any given year was 50,000 (in 2003). Original sales predictions for the X-Type were 100,000 cars per year.

Therefore, Jaguar execs are not lying when they talk about the importance of the XE to the brand. I wish JLR luck but I can't see the XE dislodging its German rivals in key markets.
