The time has come to scrap the dole, for those on it long term anyway! No more freebies at the expense of the educated people, hard working decent people. Not the cunce who's sky sports and multi room sub is paid for by the folk who get out of bed in the morning. I'm sick busting my balls every day while these wasters longer around drinking cans of Stella at lunchtime

We should petition the government prior to the budget, then scrap usc for us decent folk

I'd have a cut off time of 3 years. Anyone dependent on JSA after 3 years is taking the piss and should absolutely be cut off. And other benefits should be cut gradually after as long as they fail to get work.

We have a situation now where getting our unemployment rate below 10% is going to be seriously difficult because a large cohort of that 10% are more comfortable on welfare than working - even minimum wage.

Jobs don't just appear out of nowhere just because you've been on the dole for a few years.

Please explain how a person who has no job and is unable to get a job is meant to survive with no income, or else STFU.

    Thanks.

Yes there is plenty of work around the world but it all requires an investment a long term unemployed person may not be able to afford.

Also the world needs unskilled people. If we did not have unskilled workers the economy would be a lot worse off than it is right now.

That is your problem and not anyone else though. Get yourself a job. Any job. It's not as difficult as many seem to think or want everyone else to believe. If you really want a job you could get one.

So just let the unskilled starve?moving overseas requires a decent amount of seed money too, even more-so to if you have a family.

Don't let these real life problems impinge on your idiotic opinions though.

Really?? Jeez I never thought I could get a job if I really wanted! Right!
So dropping my cv in everywhere then getting taken on for days unpaid training in a fricking cafe to then not get the job! Silly me, just not trying hard enough to get anything or something.

I have fecking worked all my life even part time when I was at school so spare me the crap!

Have a read of the jobbridge scandal thread. There was a link yesterday. Our lovely people in charge are now ringing companies with vancanies advertised and asking them to turn real jobs into job bridge positions.

This will only force more people to lose their jobs and claim the dole.

If true what a shambles this country is that they want to take away paid jobs just so they can make their unploymeny numbers look better,

i have no problem with people on the dole i've been there myself, but like many people i have a problem with people that make a lifetime of it, currently i know a good few people getting free housing and its sickening for the people that put in a hard graft only to see these people get it handed to them

    Dude, I'm unemployed not desperate

I know your probably not desperate but maybe you should be, while abroad things got so bad for me I was about to take a charity job, and you'll laugh when you hear this job, no saftey net of the dole either so once the funds were gone it was me myself and I

basically you set up a bbq outside a supermarket, the charity had a agreement with the supermarket so they would supply the sausages bread ect.. you didnt pay upfront but squared off at the end of the day from the profit,

so you basically sold hot dogs for $2, for every one sold you get 1 dollar and the charity gets $1 thats after all the supplies were paid for,

now never would i have considered ever doing a job like this but desperate times call for desperate measures, so i came home after the unpaid days training if you even wanted to call it that, had a laugh about it with my house mate and he was like are you seriously going to take that job and I said I have no choice need any income i can get, so being the sound bástard he was rang his boss there and then and said if he had anything going and he said bring him in you you tomorrow,

now i had been looking for work for a while prior to this and also asked him to seee of there was anything going but I think he was relucent to ask because you don't want to be responsable for some joker and have it fall back on you, so once he saw that I was commited to do what i condidered to be a ****ty job he put his neck out for me and the rest is history,

i don't really know what the point of this story is other then once people see your commited they will help you out, i'm going to shut up now as i think i wrote a essay rambling on here

well due to health and saftey you cant just set up a bbq outside a shop yourself and sell hence the training and charity involved, but that was just an example, if you cant handle getting the piss ripped out for being on the dole for whatever reasons consider the alternative no matter how demeaning you might think it is.

In reality... the land of the living... the amount of boards threads attacking unfortunate folk that ended up with a contract with the DSP being degraded further by everyday insults must be overwhelming.

Enough of this dole bashing, it has been going on too long. Help your fellow-man and just get on with life, because if it's not the dole... it will be something else the government strategy uses to get us to fight against ourselves.

Who said life was easy either way ?. This sort of talking regarding dole bashing just depresses all.

Why is it always the tv subscription? Is this the ultimate measure of living in luxury? You'd wonder sometimes if this Daily Mail brigade flick through the channels and boil into a rage at the site of "you are not subscribed to this channel" in the knowledge that someone out there on benefits is subscribed to the channel.

Whatever you're paying in taxes, you'd be spending twice as much on security if the dole was scrapped. If you can afford it that is.

I've started doing Monday Club lately, because I don't work on Mondays and I am back over in my home town so I go drinking with two girls I know. What sets me apart from everyone else out is, I'm spending my own money. You see, Monday is pay day for most of these wasters. And there's two pubs in the town that are absolutely jammed packed from about 12 o'clock in the day. In one of the pubs, there's a dj who plays from 3 until about 7, then a local band will play.

And those wasters will sit there drinking until their money is gone. I know I'm no better, but at least I'm paying for mine and am getting up for work the next day

    Internet connections aren't free.

The other issue is that recognition of courses like these are patchy and difficult to align with specific jobs.

Don't get me wrong - I think the availability is great - but the fact is if you are unemployed, it takes time to get enough out of any of these options to make yourself employable depending on where you're starting from. I think there needs to be a realistic assessment of what is possible in terms of learning and how it might relate to obtaining a job ultimately.

If you look at some of your suggestions, they are not going to necessarily result in a job: history for one and the languages option, sorry, that's not going to work because the amount of work you need to get yourself up to working in a foreign language is to the tune of 3 or 4 years including immersion.

So yes. there are loads of ways to educate yourself - an awful lot of interesting stuff on iTunes and even on youtube as well. Structuring it and exploiting it in such away as to make yourself employable; that's a different kettle of fish.

Possibly social welfare should encourage people to become self employed ie create jobs raher than wait for someone else to create it. However?, you have to be on the dole 12 months and risk losing it forever if you set up your own business. A cynic would say that they dont want people to be their own bossess and like havig people nice and docile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,694 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Although I am going to use NI as my example, it sort of proves the point.

I know of 3 young girls in the last year who arrived from England (2) and Canada (1) into Derry, one of Europe's unemployment blackspots supposedly.

They are aged 21, 23 and 34 respectively. They landed with no jobs or no interviews lined up.

In the time they have been here, all have got jobs easily. In fact one has had 3 jobs, and is currently working 2 part-time jobs as it suits her schooling. The second is on her 2nd job and enjoying it. And the third has had a temp job in Belfast and now a full time permanent job in Derry.

My point would be that if you try hard enough and actually want to work, then you can find work. I know of quite a few others of similar ages who have never worked and are not actively looking for work, as they are already engrained in the benefit culture.

If there was no dole and the threat of homelessness or starvation was a very real prospect then we would see a drop in the unemployment rate.
