Me again but could do with advice on this sore one. Thing is i have a side by side shot gun which i like but it's killing me. When i fire the trigger gard is hopping of my middle finger it's swollen and cut after a few shots. Do ye know of anything i could put on the back of the trigger gard to act as a pad.

    How?

An improper grip might account for the trigger guard hitting your finger (sliding or recoiling back into your hand) but cutting it. The impact would need to be severe or a sharp piece on the guard.

I've heard and seen lads getting their fingers caught in a shotgun but usually when opening/closing it.

How is your grip? Is the gun "sliding" in your hand when you fire the gun?

Yes cass it's sliding back that little bit. Been a side by side the stock is that much slimmer behind the trigger gard and i have big hands im not getting a good hold on the stock, Not much fun when it hits i have swelling there all the time.

I've never heard of anyone with this complaint before but after saying that i don't know a lot of lads with SxS.

Five things i can think off:
    • Get the stock professionally altered to suit your hand size.
    • Adapt it yourself with padding, Sugru, or some other homemade alteration.
    • Wear a heavy pair of gloves.
    • Adjust your grip and learn to shoot with a new hand position.
    • Place padding or something else to pad the trigger guard or brace the gap between the trigger guard and your hand.

There's little rubber cushions that can be got in gunshops exactly for the problem you have. They fit to the rear of the trigger guard with a little screw clip that screws through the trigger guard.

    Have a look here.

It's a malleable material, much like Mala, but when shaped it hardens in the air and forms a tough and semi permanent adaptation to whatever you use it for. Lads here have used it for the same reasons you have.

Another option is PolyMorph Plastics. Such as the stuff from this crowd. Seems to be the business.

    Never seen those before.

Jaysus they really do think of everything. I mean someone somewhere has probably invented a gadget for a problem we don't even know exists.

Meathstevie might be able to give you a dealer that has one, but if that fails Fleabay has them.

Never went shopping for one, a few phone calls to the usual addresses might do the trick.

Used the poly morph on my bipod because the custom stock has a flat base under the swivel stud works great just put it in boiling water melts then shape it then just leave cool and turns solid like nilon

Haven't had a chance to ring anyone yet, working last night and bank holiday and all but I'm quite sure that any gun shop should be able to get you one for about the price of a pint and not a Temple Bar pint at that.

A sore finger is a sore thing... but a sore thing is no sore finger!

If you want it quickly I reckon Courtlough might be worth a call tomorrow. Being an open clayshooting ground and all I reckon they may well be open tomorrow.

    Hi Snipe49,
I had a similar problem with my side by side. Every time I fired it the trigger guard hit my middle finger. A rubber stop was purchased and added to the back of the trigger guard but it made no difference. I put up with this for years and eventually bought an o/u.

Last year my son had his o/u stock altered and I brought my s/s along too. It turned out that the the comb of the stock was too far forward, pushing my hand up against the trigger guard. The comb was filed back, problem disappeared and I am shooting with my old friend again. (1902 Cogswell and Harrison)

My only regret is that I did not get the stock altered 30 years ago.

Pat Sludds near Enniscorthy is the man who did the work. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

    Hi Snipe49.
I sought advice in the past about this problem from a number of different gun dealers and had the stock lengthened twice in accordance with their recommendations without making any difference to the middle finger hammering. Those whom I consulted thought ( as I did ) that the critical dimension was from the buttplate to the back of the trigger guard. It turns out that the distance from the back of the trigger guard to the most forward part of the comb can make a bigger difference, particularly if you have wide hands.

    Good luck with the alterations.

Weird, my friend gets a bruised middle finger when fireing my sidexside and my hands are bigger than his!

I had the same problem at the start with a side x side merkel. In the end I used to straighten out my middle finger so it would alongside the guard without affecting my shooting too much.

But since then I must have changed the way I held the gun as i know grip the gun like normal as if it was my under and over. it might just be that you are gripping the gun too high, or has this been happening for a few years?

Hi, if you need to get something quick, go to the local chemist's and ask for Corn Pads. They are little foam pads for between your toes, for people with Corns. Some are sticky backed, and could at least alleviate the problem till you get a more permanent solution.
