Martin McHugh's references to business people in the county rallying round and improving the county team is quiet dis-concerting!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭willabur

it costs a serious amount of money to keep a county team going

Listening to Clare - Longford on RTE radio.
Well, they're switching over to updates on other games a lot too, so not even a full half of commentary

Anyways, the commentator (Brian Carty) told us on 3 seperate occasions that Sean Collins is Colm Collins' son, and twice mentioned that he is Podge Collins' brother.
    God, change the tune!

Watching it last night and can never understand how Martin McHugh is allowed on.
He is dreadful, at some points I cant even understand what he is saying and it sounds like he doesn't even finish his sentences.
And he comes out with garbage, having a go at gooch previously and then syaing leitrim should be the same standard as the top teams. good man martin.. clueless!

I wouldn't have him doing the evening programme at all. I find him better for live match stuff as he'll often bring up tactics and stuff you might miss watching it on tv.

So we have had a stack of one sided Hurling games this weekend.

Will the narrative still be that the Hurling Championship is the greatest thing since sliced bread and that the football is sh!te. ?

Well the football is generally sh!te every year and that still hasn't changed.

I see Michael Duignan was back today on TSG giving unbiased and balanced analysis of his beloved KK.

Poor hurling championship does nothing to change the fact football is a sh1te sport, the odd good game aside.

He's well countered by the neutral comment from DOG.

Not based on this years championship it isn't. It's been a really good football championship so far.

The awarding of that goal to Limerick is simply shocking from the officials. surely the ball ending up outside of the net after the shot was taken would be a pretty big indication it wasn't a goal.

amazingly bad call and the umpire 2 feet away from it , the same thing happened back in the 90s in a munster football match between tipperary and kerry where the ball hit the outside of the back stantion (side netting) and bounced back into play where kerry got what turned out to be the wining goal of the game

    Unbelievable call!

I know its the fastest field sport in the world and all but like ya said "sliotar in net = goal, sliotar not in net or no ripple in net= no goal".

Reminds me of a bugbear of mine of the ball rolling under the net after a goal. Breffni park is a serial offender-happened yesterday even though the ball barely crossed the line. Will somebody tie down the bloody net please!

Yeah I remember that, the umpire just turned his back to the action fearing a ball to his face. O'Rourke was on co commentator duty and was giving out about tipp defence appealing for a non existent free out when they were clearly appealing the wide ball. Made a sheepish apology few mins later after a second look at the replay.

Flicked it on a few minutes ago to see donal og analysis of a hurling match where you couldn't even see the players let alone the ball😱

Thouht Daragh Moloney was beginning to lose it with Brolly today. Brolly really needs to go, shouting over and interrupting everyone. I bloody despise the man at this stage.

Des Cahill....."Roscommon and Cavan are neighbours"..... ehh, no Des, we aren't neighbours, Leitrim & Longford are between us.

Its not about the championship. Its the sports themselves. There is and never will be any comparison between them.

Moloney had no business trying to stop criticism of the referee who was poor yesterday. Cork rode in Killarney yet again

I thought the penalty decision was a horrendous one & Brolly was quite right to point it out. However, on shows like the Sunday Game, you highlight incidents that happen during the game, you give a bit more time to the REALLY big incidents such as goals, sendings off, penalties etc etc & then you move on to the next incident. There is only so much time they can give to a 70 minute game. They have to squeeze a lot into the time that they, have before they had to hand off to the hurlers, or take an ad break or whatever.

The problem with Brolly is that he goes off on long winded rants, that hog all of the producers time and all of the viewers attention, when there are loads of other things that contribute to the eventual outcome, that need to be highlighted too. Brolly was right to bring up the bad refereeing decision, but Moloney was equally right to tell him to put a sock in it eventually. If Brolly was allowed bang on about it for as long as he wanted to, he'd still be talking about it now.

Did anyone else think it was bizarre that Tommy Carr during the Roscommon-Cavan match called the sending off a '50-50' ? He was so blase about it. But it was blatant - the guy had to go. Carr is so equivocal about dirty play and off the ball stuff, it's unbelievable. He always seems to end his analysis of the situation by saying it was harmless, nothing serious. I think it was in the Galway-Mayo match where two lads were pulling out of each other and Carr said it was harmless.

What annoys me in general about the analysts is that if a guy gets sent off, they never talk about how the guy getting sent off has a negative effect on his team for the rest of the game. These guys train for 7-8 months before championship, prepare methodically and scientifically, good diet, etc. etc., and an act of neanderthal stupidity on the part of one player on the big day can be to the detriment of his team. No doubt it's because of the macho culture in the GAA - they don't want to seen to be holier than tho and can't even condemn dirty play. The old 'they're only amateurs' or 'tension of the game' excuse is trotted out. In fairness, McStay would be an exception in that regard.

Of all the spoofers and bluffers I've seen on TV Carr takes the biscuit. What has he ever done in management to deserve a top job as an analyst. He provides no insight, is almost factually wrong, and has little idea of formations or set ups.
    A few examples from Saturday:
"there is no hints of blanket defences here" - fro what I saw on TV both teams played with sweepers, and often more than 1
As mentioned above, the sending;off a clear strike, described as 50:50... WTF.
Cathal Cregg, scored a good goal, then criticised and described as really struggling, to being awarded MOTM.
Add to this the constant negative narrative and he's a real pain in the hole. Compare this to the radio coverage provided by newstalk, generally sharp, to the point, willing to praise, generally insightful and without an agenda.
There has to be someone more in touch than Carr

The panel nominated James O Donoghue for man of match. He didnt touch the ball in play for the first 26 mins of the second half.

Is there a decent co-commentator working at RTE for football?

So more than deserving of it so.

And that's not to mention his antics on the field everytime someone looked at him crooked.

Watch him score a bagful in the replay.

he is superb - I love how he looks so languid in his running style, doesn't look to be moving that fast but if you look at the lad chasing him its like looking at the roadrunner... legs everywhere
