Here's the full thread if you'd like to witness the horror.

The really sad thing is that after he cleaned it up, it looked really well.

He then goes and destroys it!

Why didnt you just build your own instead of destroying a nice original cabinet?
You should be ashamed of yourself, you turned gold into a turd.
btw your a laughing stock in the arcade community

What a nice first post.

Whereas the others are saying it's 'beautiful', 'looks amazing'... Strange bunch that think it looks good. Horrendous what he's done to the poor candy. :(

Yeah, bit over the top alright. You can be horrified without being an arse.

Although the fact that someone would sign up to a website to go on a rant about what he did just shows the stupidity of the modifications.

A lot of folks in the US see candy cabs as generic junk or don't really know what they are. I specifically remember reading a thread where someone was ruining a Jaleco Pony II 19 (with a value of about €2000) and one of the responses was something like - 'and it's only a little generic cabinet, so you don't need to feel guilty about Maming it!'

I left a post there myself, trying to be just a little more positive about it but pointing out the folly of his/her work.
I wonder if they will take it well?
Seems that previous poster was banned for suggesting that the cab work was a bad idea, although his language was slightly more colourful than that.

    Nice post :)

Unfortunately this poor Pony can't be saved, but it's nice to even make folks aware of the potential value of these things (both monetary and historical, it's it's not like the world is full of Pony IIs!)

I have to say **** that lad.
that was the first time I've ever been properly angry at a picture of a mame cab.
he deserves every bit of abuse thrown at him imo!

And that cost a lot to build I reckon!

That pony thread has the best quote ever on any arcade site

    What a plonker

Is everyone just too polite to say it, or are cabs like that a 'culture thing'?

It's possible they just have a really warped view of what a MAME machine should look like as it's a forum dedicated to builds.

I guess for some people, building is the enjoyment. So they just keep adding more and more and more and end up with these monstrosities.

It doesn't take must of an eye to see these are in really bad taste though, so you do have to wonder!

I wonder what responses I might get, when the Americans finally decide to get the hell up.
I tried to be as polite as I could.

O1s1n, you've one of those cabs, why not post up what it is supposed to look like.

My one is the sleeker Pony III, the one in the link is an older Pony II. They actually look quite different :)

Well, maybe to the trained eye. I do remember someone here saying that candy cabs all look the same :D

I'm sure the Americans on that forum would just tell me it looks like a washing machine!

The rotate mech in particular is nicely done, and other than all the unnecessary lights and what looks like a customised X arcade CP, it's not the worst I've seen. I quite like the way he's got the two screens too, especially for the pinball. I've never been the biggest fan of digital pinballs, but it works well in that regard.

Jesus that rotate mech is pretty nice.

Horrible to see that machine, guy who built it obviously has a lot of skill but just horrible taste

It's all subjective, the person who's building their respective machines seems to like them.

Its akin to someone completely 'pimping' a desirable, rare and significant classic car in a really distasteful way.

Classic car enthusiasts would be bothered by that.

Excuse the ignorance, was the Pony an arcade machine that was used in Europe? Don't ever remember seeing that shape in my youth at the seaside in the UK. When arcades used to have actual games rather than fruit machines and 2p shovers.

Only place I've ever seen them in Europe was the Troc in London.

They're Japanese cabs, which were rarely imported into Europe.

You're dead right there Ole Jack.
It's surprising and not entirely plausible that so few people frequenting a site like Hyperspin would not see the abject horror of fecking up a Pony, especially, as already said, halfway through the process, it looked pretty damn good.
Better perhaps to have done it to a AWSD or something, at least they're more common.
I'm not posting on that forum again though, Agrajags comment about my posts in the future to be going "onward and upward" really p1sses me off, judgemental twonk.

Ah don't say that, you've been such a great contributor to their forum in the years you've been a member... :pac:

Seriously though, maybe "troll" wasn't accurate but Agrajag is spot on in that your first post was to give out about someone else's work, hardly a great introduction or constructive even. Yes what he's done looks crap in our opinion but what's the point in posting just to be negative. Folks on here would be rightly defensive if a first poster on here was to knock someone else's work.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,679 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

I was quite constructive, as you put it, and acknowledged the work put in, but I didn't like the work and explained why without being nasty.
Anyway, let them at it, it's a hideous thing but then there's a lot of people who wouldn't want my AWSD in their home.
