As much I loved the Camaro SS we rented, it felt wasted. Passed at least 3 Highway Patrol cops a day standing in the middle of the highways gunning people as they went by. The only time I got any real fun out of it was traffic lights and toll booths and even then you couldn't even max out 2nd gear for fear of being jumped on. Oddly enough, the americans don't seem to take too kindly to that kind of behaviour but will gladly drive straight across all 4 lanes of a highway without looking once.
I had the same experience with a Corvette ZHZ I rented. At 80mph on the highway I soon realised that I was overtaking everything, nothing was going quicker than me. 75mph seems to be about the quickest folk drive, although that was in Florida, don't know about other states. Was also afraid to gun it properly. Toll booths got an earful alright! :)

I've done it in the L.A to San Francisco direction twice. Once in a Crown Vic and Once in a rental Impala. It's a spectacular road and the views are stunning however I found it too busy to have any real fun on it and the overtaking opportunities aren't plentiful. You might get 5 minutes in before you would be up behind someone again. When we did it in the Crown Vic we were stuck behind some guy in a modern Comaro. He wouldn't pull in to let us by and then he floored it along the only straight sections and the Vic clearly didn't have the power to pass him then

If I could choose any car I've driven to drive on that road I would probably pick a Levin. Mostly because I've a lot of confidence in one and would be great fun in the twists leaving the Americans behind in their floppy barges :)

I did my road trip in a 6 pot 'Stang. Fairly gutless but WAY cheaper than a V8.I had two V8's at home at the time so it didn't bother me. There's not many parts of the PCH you can give it socks in tbh. The important part to me was cruising down the California coast in a 'vert, sun on my head, pacific ocean gleaming on one side and beautiful scenery the other. Woulda been better with the V8 rumble though. :o

I also did part of it on the back of a GSXR ridden by a girl:eek:
I admired her bike in traffic, (I was in the back of said boxy stang at the time)
She asked me if I wanted to go for a ride :D
She was some pilot, and that was some weekend

GTI passed 150,000km earlier. Which means in the just over 2 years I've owned it, it's done near 50,000km. And a good year of that time wasn't spent commuting in it. Shoulda bought a diesel :P

Speaking of which, what do people think of high mileage cars?

Mine was at 212,212km today (I noticed cos of the symmetry). I reckon that by the time next year rolls around, I'll have it at 250km. Would it be worth trying to sell it on then, or would it's value have bottomed out as it's got 'high mileage'?

I was on Done Deal when i was just browsing around, bored, and seen a fair few cars, looking for decent money, that were sitting around the 300km mark. I'd have thought that a car that has over 300km on the clock would be looking for a buyer on a budget?

Personally I reckon most cars are able to go a lot longer than that these days. I'd say most cars would see 500km fairly easily. But I do notice cars seem to rack up the mileage a lot quicker these days (sales rep mileage on a fair few cars). I think I seen an 10 with 300km on the clock on DoneDeal the other day. Lot o' driving.

100k miles with nothing replaced, no thanks, 120k miles with some of the expensive jobs done, definitely. Once the engine hasn't been run low on oil, been serviced regularly it'll keep going.

Exactly, got the 530 last March with 133k miles on her, we've pushed it to 192 this week!
Never a think wrong, body and engine look good. You'd never suspect she had that kind of mileage.

I don't think I would like to have a low milage car. I would feel bad about driving it because it wouldn't be low anymore…

Savage drive, especially the twisties between Carmel and Big Sur.

You weren't exactly taking it handy Donal. I did it over two days and it still felt a bit rushed.

Nah, could have made more stops along the way but decided to keep going for large chunks of it. Because it was labor day there was an hour delay getting our car (though if we were there 5 minutes later it looked like we would have been waiting even longer!). Traffic wasn't too bad overall, disappeared entirely after Carmel.

Probably sacrilege here but I did it in a 2013 Toyota Corolla. Have a 1993 one at home so it felt right. Only saw maybe four cop cars, none doing speeding checks, but was generally 5 mph over the limit most of the way.

Smaller road trip in two days to San Diego but have another major one then from Vegas to Yosemite to look forward to next week. Will have a think about a different car for then!

I am more worried seeing low milage examples out there. I prefer previous owner to put money in to actual car maintenance, then clocking the car.

At least when you buy car with high milage, it is honest car. I would even take high milage car, which has stuff done, then buying low milage, which is about to fall apart.

Each to their own but personally I don't see the point in going to the US and hiring a Corolla, or a Porsche for that matter. You see Corollas all over the place here and you can go to Mondello and drive a Porsche.

Similarly I don't go to Irish bars to listen to diddly-eye and drink sh1te and overpriced Gunness. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale FTW. ;)

Of course, each to their own. But I love doing the trip in the corolla, as I said it felt right!

What's just as infuriating is when this is the case, lots of history then some muppet clocks it anyway

Speaking of which, this left me speechless :P when I was filling with petrol, go in to pay, I arrive back out to find this pair of ladies gawking at my car. I think they were in the car beside me, a Civic SiR I think. One says to me as I walk to it "hope you're doin rings with that yoke!" and walks on...

Well that brightened up my day at least! :pac:

    Yeah, that's ugly as ****.
Unfortunately, old with modern engine doesn't always mean cool, especially when you destroy the lines of one of the most beautiful classics around.

Great way for towing a car too if you buy them and need to get them places with no tax, nct etc. or if a car breaks down too !
