This thread won't last long. Most people don't want travellers living beside them. They have a reputation for anti social behaviour.

Oh this is going to get good.

People would rather not take the risk.

Fair play to Cllr Higgins. Her constituents raised concerns and she sorted them.

Is building houses that are only intended to be used for travellers not discrimination against the rest of society?

Then let them take a case against the council for discrimination.

If it was rehousing Jewish community what would the reaction be?

Like it or not travellers have a bad reputation and not without reason, people are going to be wary with any suggestion of them moving nearby.

Jews generally work, pay tax and house themselves within the norms of society.

I'd imagine the reaction would be based on that completely different situation.

Do the Jewish community need to be rehoused?

    Are we in 1930's Mississippi?

    No,
    travelers are not a race,
travelers don't have crosses burning in their yards every night
there is no KKK (or organisation like them) terrorizing them,
travelers don't get lynched and hung from trees.
travelers don't have their own toilets, schools or water fountains
    ect ect ect...

Jewish people don't need to have houses provided for them.

    Learn the meaning of racism.

Travellers are an ethnicity and discriminating against an ethnicity is racism.

Yeah its a problem. Maybe the settled community and traveller community could both work a little harder to live in harmony.

Some travelers are fine, you just cant guarantee the entire family is and when the person shows up the area can go to **** as their "culture" involves turning a blind eye to it.

If travellers are just like the rest of us why do they need special housing then? What happens if a settled person needs a home, they go on a list and wait their turn. No one suggests purpose built accommodation. Why do travellers need it?

You can cry that "tar with the one brush" stuff all you like. Doesnt change what everyone already knows. If Travellers move in nearby trouble wont be far behind them. And no community is going to want to deal with it.

You want is to talk about the travelling community at an individual level? Or are you just determined to stick your head in the sand and refused to recognise common distinguishing characteristics between different social groups?

I am not sticking my head in the sand I live beside travellers. It's lazy scaremongering and picking an easy target to blame to everything

    All they want is equality.

...So long as they get way more equality than the rest of us.

...And that they don't have to pay any tax to get it.

    Complains about Traveller lifestyle.

    Complains about them being settled.

    Brilliant.

No, it's not. There may by hyperbole and prejudice but there is also some substance (which you are entitled to debate) to the common view of travellers and obstinately refusing to acknowledge the negatives is just as unconstructive as focusing exclusively on them IMO.

So what if it is? People work hard to pay mortgages, no one would want anything in their community that would devalue their property.

Good on Cllr. Higgins. It must have been a huge relief for those in the area to get that letter.
