I find the format of another site (not going to mention the name) to be much better in encouraging strong, interesting and highly informative discussion in a very easily accessible way. The linear format of conventional discussion forums is outdated nowadays - it takes a lot of trawling through fairly worthless stuff to get to the meat of a topic and by that stage it feels too late to join the discussion anyway.

I hope Boards take the bold step in changing the format and moving towards something based on upvotes/downvotes that lets the cream rise to the top. Thanking posts is already an established norm on Boards so it wouldn't necessarily be out of the behavioural norm to push this towards ranking content.

Absolutely not. Downvoting leads to cliques.

If they didnt ban the ones they ban the place would be unbearable for anyone who actually contributes to this place.

Problem is AH. Its pure shíte stuck on a loop with the occasional news story threw in.

Where else would I go if I don't have anything meaningful to contribute?

He's talking about Reddit. C'mon, no one's ever been infracted for mentioning it on any of the other threads that have cropped up on this subject.

An infraction would mean witnesses. You'd just quietly disappear....

Another thing is, the same topics keep coming up over and over again which I'm sure puts people off.

It's like it's recycled every few months.

I'm sure it's doing just as well if not better than in the past - but proper discussion of topics and events has certainly been going downhill for a long time.

Things certainly seemed different after the great hack of 2010 and the increase in re-reg numbers certainly hasn't helped. But I generally don't come to AH or Boards for a serious discussion, so I'm not too bothered.

Oh please oh please don't let boards copy the reddit format. It sucks for any discussion type thingy.

I actually didn't mention it because I'm fond of Boards and don't want to encourage people leaving it!

It's line it's recycled every few months.

It's the same with practically every forum.

Reddit isn't even safe from the constant recycling of material.

Ya can't get rid of After Hours! Imagine boards without After Hours, it would be like pizza without cheese! :(

I get a lot of laughs out of after hours, I would die a little bit inside if it was gone. :(

Sorry OP and I wish to extend my sincere apologies to all Boards users, particularly those who frequently post in AH. I have not been posting as much lately and I know it's being causing a ripple throughout the online community as evident by this thread.

However, boardsies. I'am omnipresent. My legacy, my imprint on the community if you will, shall continue to be seen during my intermittent absence. For some this is seen as a good thing, which shapes the dialogue and philosophy of user content. For others, this is a bad thing. My absence results in many, many upset users. To them, I would like to offer my sincere regret for the hurt they're feeling.

I'am as always available via PM to the female users of AH for their needs.

and then you get lazy hoores like thejournal.ie recycling already cycled material from reddit and attempting (badly) to pass it off as original content.

Rest assured after the first day of nuclear war, families the country over will be sitting around the glow of an AH thread looking for survival tips, registering a new all time high for this site.

Thanks +1 will be the new currency we trade in, for money shall be worthless

On that day, we'll all be sons of thanks whores.

Yeah people.dont understand after hours. Its not about discussion its about saying something you think is funny then returning to see if everybody else thought it was funny. Then curseing them all that they didnt find it funny because they have a vendetta against you and not your hilariously funny post. Then returning the next morning to see if any of the people found it funny at night time. Then curseing them again.
There is a forum for everything to discuss everything in.
This is really the section where you put a thread if you want it to get derailed I think.

Yeah. There's a politics section - with very serious posters and highly moderated - for politics. AH gets some political discussion allowed because it's the "main" forum, a catch all.

I've been on Boards for a couple of years now and my experience is that, apart from AH, there tends to be a clique associated with each forum. The long-standing contributors, (experts of course), give the impression that they "own" the forum and interlopers are really not welcome unless they tow the line and agree with their betters. This is especially true if the newcomer expresses a radical or non-conventional view; almost immediately the term 'troll' is trotted out.
Of course Boards will die eventually; every dog has its day. It will die because a new generation will see it as old and fuddy-duddy. Eventually, the only people on boards will be geriatrics and the main forums will be residential homes and the merits of complan.
In the meantime there is AH where at least we can have a bit of banter and cheeky humour. Enjoy it while it lasts.
