What's dying is the frequency of actual decent discussion - it's just really bad puns and stupid jokes derailing threads most of the time. Maybe we can see the statistics I'm sure it's doing just as well if not better than in the past - but proper discussion of topics and events has certainly been going downhill for a long time.

There's on average about 5,000 people browsing the forums at any one time.

It seems like you're browsing through some pretty quiet sub-forums. Check the front page to see the most recent posts.

Introducing the thanks button was a huge mistake-that and letting Biggins turn AH into a grandstanding circle-jerk.

This is true for After Hours ... but the other forums I find excellent and very good discussion.

Just look at the photography forum ! - pure class.

Boards is a tiny bit quiter I'm terms of posts per day compared to a few years ago, however smaller Irish forums are a _lot_ quieter now , every year they decline. I imagine social media plays a part.

I find the format of another site (not going to mention the name) to be much better in encouraging strong, interesting and highly informative discussion in a very easily accessible way. The linear format of conventional discussion forums is outdated nowadays - it takes a lot of trawling through fairly worthless stuff to get to the meat of a topic and by that stage it feels too late to join the discussion anyway.

I hope Boards take the bold step in changing the format and moving towards something based on upvotes/downvotes that lets the cream rise to the top. Thanking posts is already an established norm on Boards so it wouldn't necessarily be out of the behavioural norm to push this towards ranking content.

If they didnt ban the ones they ban the place would be unbearable for anyone who actually contributes to this place.

Problem is AH. Its pure shíte stuck on a loop with the occasional news story threw in.

Absolutely not. Downvoting leads to cliques.

Another thing is, the same topics keep coming up over and over again which I'm sure puts people off.

It's like it's recycled every few months.

Things certainly seemed different after the great hack of 2010 and the increase in re-reg numbers certainly hasn't helped. But I generally don't come to AH or Boards for a serious discussion, so I'm not too bothered.

It's the same with practically every forum.

Reddit isn't even safe from the constant recycling of material.
