Buy good glass like Zeiss, Swarovski, Kahles, Nightforce, IOR etc etc and you won't need something with the diameter of a lorry wheel to see what you're looking at.

1500 , and Lamping , I pic up a second hand zeiss or something along them lines , 2 sets of Mak detachable rings , a set of Mak mounts and a yokon photon night vision scope , and you foxing rig is complete .

You would have the best of both world and 2 scopes u can change on the spot and keep zero .

Nightforce are a great scope, but start at around the €1,550 mark and go up. Also after using them for years i've found that they are perfect for target work during the day, but can be beaten when night shooting.

The likes of Swar & Kahles are among the top glass for clarity. Day or night. However they also demand the top price with prices again starting from €1,600 upwards.

The rest such as Zeiss, S&B, Leupold, Burris, Doctor, IOR vary in price from €600 all the way up to €2,800. Zeiss and S&B would have better glasss (imo) but the price tag is ridiculous for the models with anything over 3-12 magnification.

I recently wanted something new, and went for the S-Tac. It's a Sightron. Prices are €1,250 max with every model below this price. Great glass, plenty of features and the kind of magnification you'd need for lamping (very low and quite high). I done a review on my new one here.

    1700 euro , I'd be buying the zeiss victory ht , 3 - 12 x 56

IMO best scope in that size 95% light transmission

    How about some personal preferences.

Magnification, tube size, features, FFP or SFP, etc, etc. This will eliminate some choices and make picking one easier.

There are a couple of Swarovski scopes for sale on the stalking directory.
Specifically a 6-18x50. Used with the Swarovski ballistic app a dandy piece.
There's a 6-24x50 also both with TDS reticle.

i have the z6i 2-15x56 bt i got it for 1600 euro.i looked through the zeiss victory 2-12x56 i was between both for a while but the z6i with the bt turret and the extra mag done it for me.also the z6i to me seemed to have the edge clarity wise.i couldnt come pair in low light due to it was summer when i picked it up.if i was you wait awhile and put an extra 500 to your budget and you can get a top hunting scope for that.either zeiss or swaro

For lamping you want something that will let in a lot of light. Look at Smidht and Bender and go with a 56mm objective.

Of course we all want the best scope on our kits, but do we always need the best glass?

I have never been one to use my best glass for lamping. For lamping, you should have good light or should not be shooting at all.

I find the high end stuff to be critical for the last or first minutes of the day. This is when you see the difference between mid and high level glass.

However, under lighted conditions, such as Lamping, will the Swaro's and S&B's really excel over the Bushnell, Burris, and Nikon ranges?

I was out after deer once, just before dark. During the last five minutes, my mid range 40mm scope became ineffective. However, the glass next to me, a Swaro, could still make out the edge of the forestry (I forget the bell size, maybe 50mm). So if your game depends upon those first few/last minutes of day, I agree. The top end glass excels.

However, at night, I have never lost a shot due to light and the 40mm bell works grand. Granted, my LF 170 gives plenty of light. But again, if you don't have the light at night, don't shoot.

Personally, I do not think lamping justifies a need for top end glass. Which is not to say that low end glass will do, it will not. I have seen the cheap stuff "frost" up in applications as well.

If you have the dosh, by all means by the best.
