You might want to watch We Are What We Are whilst you have your feet up recuperating. It'd be right up your street, a wholesome story of a tight knit family who appreciate fresh air and carefully sourced home cooked ingredients.

Yes, it's in the back of the car. Wheels are fine, but my vision is not clear enough yet (and my bones/muscles not strong enough) to do a propoer check - at this stage though there appears absolutely nothing to warrant a new bike ....

Just the left side of my face (with the broken cheekbone) remains very numb and vision a bit blurred. It's slightly perturbing when the specialists in attendance at the scene keep telling me how lucky I was!

Possibly missed it but which bike were you riding? The Cervelo?

    One of the Cervelos, yes:P

(T'was a road race, meaning it was the S5's ("the Beast"'s) first outing of the year on Sunday)

Have found some damage to the bartape around the left shifter so there may still be some scope to retract my earlier statement;)

I think as long as you live, and suffer no permanent functional damage, people will tell you that. And to an extent, they're right. Not much consolation when you're lying around the house in pain though. :)

If it's any comfort, the Swords lads here in Clonard were not looking forward to the windy race!

All that healing, pain and suffering certainly deserves a new bike, not to mention the fact that your arms may end up slightly longer or shorter after the breaks heal, the geometry, think of the geometry!

Got to say it's not just the fact I've suffered injury. Surely the nature and scale of injuries are relevant also. Indeed checking the discharge notes, I've not yet worked out how many bones are broken - iit's possibly 5 or 6 in the facial area alone. I have no idea how long I will be off the bike(s) or what rehabilitation I will need to undergo. All these must be factors in determining the number of new bikes to which I will be entitled??? Can't skimp either as I suspect there will be others out there who may need to refer to any standards I determine in the event they suffer similar issues in the future, and I would certainly not want to be held responsible for anyone not getting their full dues - let's face it I'm in a position to set standards for all of you to potentially require at some future date.....

Beasty, you need to hurry up and check ALL your bikes. Any that look like the decals have been blurred by this incident need to be replaced immediately.

Didn't get the bike (and computer) back until yesterday and now I'm finally getting round to analying data:
    1hr 8m 50s - 44kph, 160 bpm
    1hr 8m 53s - 1kph, 160 bpm
    1hr 14m 13s - 0kph, 98bpm
    1hr 14m 14s - 0kph, 0bpm:eek:
    1hr 15m 26s - 0kph, 99bpm:)
    1hr 15m 34s - 0kph, 103 bpm
    1hr 15m 35s - 0kph, 0bpm:eek:
    1hr 15m 50s - 0kph, 104bpm:)

What I don't know is whether the HRM was playing up at all .....

It's OK, those non-zero values are probably anomalies.

That's impressive. 3 seconds from 44kph to 1 kph and then another 5 minutes to slide to a halt. Must have been a slippery road all right...

Speed was zero after another second - it was only the heart that stopped after 5 mins. Possible explanation - apparantly I was struggling to breathe and the paramedics may have moved the HRM to help me clear my airwaves. However the "cold" records of the Garmin do help "elevate" the story a bit....

Sounds dangerously like (self)medical advice to me. If only there was a mod around with their full faculties to rule on the matter...

Bit of an update required methinks. (sorry, TL;DR)

So on Wednesday I headed to hospital for a check-up on the cheek. They had not been expecting me though as they Shad received the relevant info last week and filed it - I presume they thought I was due lset week (when I had another appointment in Newry!)

So eventually after a lot of toing and froing and some -rays they decided I have a broken jaw. Interestingly they only spotted one broken wrist though.

Having been at the hospital without access to food or drink since before 8am they admitted me with the possibility of surgery that day. Later on they allowed me a sandwich confirming I would need to wait at least until Thursday. Then after a bit more starvation they decided not to operate on Thursday - next Tuesday had been mentioned as an option on Wednesday evening and I pretty much resigned myself to the long haul. Then they started to understand that I've had double vision since the accident and this morning I was shipped out to another hospital to get that checked out. The particular issus they mentioned was that in operating on the cheekbone there was a slight risk of sight loss in the eye on that side:eek:. Not exactly appealing as I have a long standing problem with my vision in the other eye

During all this rigmorole I established an escape committee. Basically I was bored, miserable and in pain - I was getting more comfort from the simple painkillers I had been prescibed by my own GP the previous week. Anyway the plan came to fruition and I walked out this evening.

Alas I'm not sure that's the end of it and epect to be recaptured and under the knife on Tuesday ...

Amazed the bike is ok. You must have cat like reflexes to unclip & jump in front of the bike to break it's fall - all in mid crash ;)

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 75,559 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

based entirely on the nature and scale of injuries I reckon I crashed into others throwing me over the handlebars with feet clipped in. I must have put both arms out and am guessing the forearms hit the deck first absorbing some of the shock but not stoppin g my head/helmet propelling into the tarmac. The bike then probably had a relatively soft landing (mainly on me!)

Not that it's your top priority right now, but unwrap the bar tape and check the handlebars at some point.

Here is what I found today:

Thanks for that - just a bit of a further update

Firstly the Sidi shoes have been found in the airing cupboard - rain must have been heavier than I thought!!

Secondly I'm headng back into hospital tomorrow. That's over 2 weeks since the original crash so I'm expecting them to need to take a hammer and chisel to the jaw and cheekbone before re-setting them...
