    Your location/exchange: Navan
    Speed daytime before 6pm (mb/s): 12mb
Speed after 6pm (mb/s):~8mb can be more or less, but ping = over 120ms and high packet loss. [streaming/gaming not possible]
Have Eircom engineer attended your address?: No, pointless.. routing problem not line fault.
Was there any fault found in your line?: -
Have you escalated the matter to your ISP, if yes, what was the result?: Several times said that they don't guarantee ping, lately tho they say it's under investigation.
When did the problems with the broadband speed started?: Late August/Start of September 2013

This is exactly when it started for me - was regularly playing WoT in the evenings then one day "bang" - dropped packets/ high pings/ crap download speeds - and it's pretty much like that every evening since - but still very usable between about 1am and 6pm. My daytime broadband is not great (7.7 MB/s) but it's consistent.

I've also see a download speed of 28kB/s from an ftp server in Holland during the evenings, despite the fact that speedtest still shows about 1MB/s is available and a simultaneous test on my O2 wireless proves that it's not the dutch server or their network bandwidth that's at fault.

The real funny thing is that despite the line appearing to be "congested" (ie a download speed of 8MB/s is now around 1MB/s in overall throughput, actual web browsing seems quite "snappy" throughout all of this. If 8Mb/s -> 1Mb/s was an actual 8 times over subscription to my shared bandwidth then everything should in theory be 1/8 the speed - it's not.

Webpages don't require alot of bandwidth to load, latency is more important. On a 20000Mb connection there still not gonna load faster

    Weird issue tonight.

Eircom's speedtest gives me the maximum of my line.

    294343.png

    Whereas all others give me:

    3310722182.png

Eircom's network is really messed up recently.

    (*edit*)
I decided to traceroute to the server providing the test file (random JPEG image). Inspected using Wireshark to find the exact address. Downloaded the JPEG file seperately for each, confirming that the Eircom test does in fact run faster.

Eircom is very slow tonight, I just ran 2 speedtests, one from Eircom and one from speedtest.net within 30 seconds of one another and got completely different results. I'm on 24meg bb and usually get 13-14 at max and usually have a ping of around 35-40.

I'm using google dns servers because I was having real bad slowdown with Eircom.

Really slow tonight for me in wexford aswell, on 24 mb, getting .33 as of a few minutes ago on speedtest.net

It is something wrong with south-east network I'm affected as well (vodafone vdsl). Latency went up 10 times (speed 6/6)

eFibre result from Kilcoole, Wicklow. Normally getting around 39mb.

    3310913065.png

Edited to add: Eircom's own speedtest somehow thinks I'm getting 20.49mb/s!

I am on my phone at the moment but our household is on ADSL2 and we get 10Mb/.6Mb...

I was on Skype around noon and it was fine. Net went down below 56k standard around lunch time.

I'll post details up tomorrow but trace routes show that my traffic is sent via Waterford nodes to Dublin even though I live in Greystones...

There is an issue with a node in Waterford as well.

    EDIT:First Tweet

    Second tweet

    Eircom didn't respond at all.

    Your location/exchange: Kells, Meath
Speed daytime before 6pm (mb/s): between 10-12 depending on the time of day)
Speed after 6pm (mb/s): drastic drop to (currently) 1.5mb
Have Eircom engineer attended your address?: Yes Twice nothing wrong with line
Was there any fault found in your line?: No.
Have you escalated the matter to your ISP, if yes, what was the result?: Yes, they say everything is fine.
When did the problems with the broadband speed started?: Approx September 2013

Sent a email to Comreg just to let them know of the joke serivce I am getting.

    Your location/exchange: Prosperous, Kildare
    Speed daytime before 6pm (mb/s): 2.6mb
    Speed after 6pm (mb/s): 2.6mb
Have Eircom engineer attended your address?: Yes Twice nothing wrong with line
Was there any fault found in your line?: No.
Have you escalated the matter to your ISP, if yes, what was the result?: Yes, they say everything is fine.
When did the problems with the broadband speed started?: Intermittent problems where speeds would drop to 0.5mb and ping of 1,020. On the two occasions Eircom checked the line, their Engineer did his best to convince me it was an internal problem even though the house is new and the wiring is fine. When I pushed the matter, he went to the exchange and changed some node and it fixed the problem (even though he had insisted the issue was in my house!).

I accept that living in the sticks rules out getting high speed broadband but the congestion on my line is getting worse by the month as services such as Netflix, which worked fine up to a couple of months ago, are now hit and miss when the broadband speed drops.

I think a visit to the Eircom so called help forum might enlighten you where you can see people who signed up for eFibre thinking that things would improve, find to their horror that in some cases it is actually worse.

Strange you mention that.I did see an improvement the last few nights.Mine was okay during the day but it was at night it went to hell.Speeds did seem a bit better at night but I didn't pay too much attention 'cause I had seen that happen before and wasn't getting my hopes up.Must keep an eye on it now.

Not me. My evening speed was its usual cack last night, 1Mb or so.

I have gone past begin angry with Eircom anyway. We are thinking of moving and so let the contract run down.If I don't move I will move to UPC and if I do, if I can avoid going with Eircom I will even if it is a half sort of avoid by going with Sky.They have been told in no uncertain terms that there will be no line rental paid for this time and if they try to force the issue,I'll be gone anyway. But they won't be paid regardless.

Mines gotten worse, less than a MB last night for a while.

I can't believe it's congestion - for me it happened fairly abruptly Sept 2013 ish. One evening I just couldn't play World of tanks and my downloads were crap at during the evening, but still fine during the day. i didn't see a gradual problem building up.

It has to be some kind of throttling/packet shaping eircom put in late last Summer.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,342 ✭✭✭red_bairn

I wasn't on after 6 pm yesterday so I don't know if it got worse. No problems during the morning/afternoon. The Sunday before, speeds were as low as a 56k connection from lunchtime throughout the rest of the day.

Doubt it, it's only affecting some exchanges. If they are doing it because of inadequate capacity at those exchanges then it's no different to congestion anyway!

No,false alarm.Still shoite.Less than half what the daytime is and that's only 6.9mb.It's hardly asking too much to get that consistently!!!!

Interestingly, my ISP is showing as Eircom tonight, even though I'm with Vodafone. I have a ticket open with Vodafone about this evening speed issue, I wonder is it something to do with that (as I guess it's an Eircom problem to solve)?

    Speed still crap though:
    3329243021.png

Edit: and the ping is twice what it normally is. :(

    Your location/exchange: location:Quin, Co Clare
Speed daytime before 6pm (mb/s): occasionally up to 2.3, usually 0.10 to 0.50
    Speed after 6pm (mb/s): 0.16
Have Eircom engineer attended your address?: yes 3 or 4 times
Was there any fault found in your line?: yes originally, but when this was 'fixed ' there was no change.
Have you escalated the matter to your ISP, if yes, what was the result?: yes, several times, no change, they say it's just the consequence of sharing the line
When did the problems with the broadband speed started?: when we got broadband first it was ok, we were getting about 2 mb but since September or so it's reached a new low, can't stream ANYTHING!

    Here's my evening

    A05aNd49_original.png

Pretty much from 6:30pm to midnight it's unusable - like that *every* weekday and most weekends. 10% packet loss makes any game unplayable and the d/l speed is not enough for youtube/netflix/twitch

it's really bad tonight, it's bad every evening/night since the beginning of last September and no let up in sight, is there anything any of us can do about this, Im trying to work tonight but pages are barely loading, it's like been back on a 28k modem with images loading line by line.

Personally I think the only thing that can be done is to approach Comreg, making a list of all the users here who have posted speeds as evidence that there's a widespread problem.

We need to collate the information first though, into a spreadsheet or something, or maybe a Google doc where people can fill in their own info. The more people the better.

Or someone can ring Joe Duffy. ;) :pac:
