I see a new wave of ads labeled "American Holidays" with the FlyShannon and United Airlines logo nearby.

Good to see a bit of advertising about.

Yeah suppose, better then nothing though. Was it expected to be daily?

Hopefully it will go daily, definate demand for this service.

I hope for an eventual re-opening of the base with a morning and evening service, along with Edinburgh and Bristol.

Walk, then run. Base was not economical hence why it was closed. If this works out then yes other flights could be added but it could easily be a flop especially when Ryanair are quick to flex their muscles. Time will tell.

I doubt they would expand a base by so much and then just close it because it's "uneconomical". It was the introduction of the MAN route with FR pissed them off and rightly so. They also made good use of the second aircraft with the Subsidised Donegal route.

The withdrawal of MAN effectively made it uneconomical.

I strongly disagree, bur without figures to prove it, we cant prove anything.

The Edinburgh and Birmingham routes had a strong market.

If stobart come back it will be like NOC-BHX with them last maybe a year or season and be scrapped.

Interesting to see if FR pick NOC for BHX over SNN, clever game players at FR. Bit laughable if they want a SEN connection when FUB as failed!

Another prediction falls flat jamie! Not really predictions of yours id say more wishful thinking!

Oh just wait a few months.....

By the way I never said they wouldn't come back just it won't be long term.

I'd be more sceptical. Remember Shannon is not Knock airport and has a larger Market for BHX. Also with the demise of the routes is the west, it will go from 21x PW between knock and Shannon to 6pw.

Yep certainly seems like you saying the Stobart wont return to SNN but surprise surprise NOC.

Knock already has a regular service to the English Midlands with a significantly greater capacity than this one provided by Ryanair to East Midlands.

The most likely scenario is that Shannon expected Ryanair to step in with a similar service from Shannon to Birmingham but, when the Ryanair rumours proved to be no more than hot air, they went back to Stobart with a better offer (probably free use of Shannon or even an additional bailout funded subsidy) to step in and take on the route.

Its losing its Birmingham route. That will obviously be a help to Shannon. No 2 ways around it.

They really expected Ryanair to move in, and for that to be such a good thing with the low frequency they offer? If that's the case the management should really mixed around a bit.

Stobart Air in dramatic U-turn at Shannon (Independent)

The airline has confirmed plans to recommence six flights a week to Birmingham from June 18, but will not base any aircraft at Shannon.

Stobart Air, which operates the Aer Lingus Regional brand, ceased operations at Shannon in January saying the airport "does not fit with our current strategic plan at this time".

When Stobart closed its Shannon base, a total of 20 weekly flights to Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh were lost. The company said last night: "Closing the base enabled us to consolidate our costs, and thereby look at Shannon from a different perspective. Now, it can work both for Shannon and our wider network."

Ronan Whitty, Stobart's head of revenue management, said: "The original decision to cease operations at Shannon Airport was a difficult but necessary one. The high cost of having aircraft based full-time at the airport made it more difficult to generate the necessary returns.

"The passenger demand is there and, together with our colleagues at Shannon and Birmingham airports, we will make a major push to mobilise a positive passenger response on this new route."

    ************************************************************

Hopefully the flights will arrive / depart early in the morning (08:00 – 09:00) which would tie in nicely with the Aer Lingus New York / Boston schedules.

Its interesting to note but not a bit surprising that airlines make decisions based on cost and not revolvers put to their head by airport authorities as some people around here would have you believe.

Passengers stranded after broken bolt grounds jet (Clare Herald)

It seems like that not all passengers can be accommodated on that 767 aircraft today as arrangements are also made to fly some passengers to Heathrow to make connecting flights.

United 764 only have 35 more seats than 752, so it positive in this regard for the route while annoying for passengers.

Just the ticket for the holidays: fun and learning for the family (Irish Times)

Atlantic Air Venture, Link Road Shannon, Co Clare

    Suitable for seven- to 90-year-olds.

This is a must for aircraft enthusiasts of all ages. Just a few minutes from Shannon airport, this small museum has a good collection of aviation paraphernalia, a few excellent examples of airplanes – some of which visitors can sit in – and also offers flight simulation packages. Young children can learn how to fly planes on a basic system (a little like a computer game), while older children and adults can get into a cockpit and learn tips from a real pilot. The realistic images make it feel as if you are circling and eventually landing a plane at your chosen airport – thrilling, even for those in the back seat. This is well worth a visit if you are in the locality and while not a day-long activity, those with a keen interest can spend a few hours before heading down the road to the airport to see some real action.

Bad news on the Boston flight being pulled for 10 days. Strong rumours that EI will pull both Boston and NY next year from Shannon for at least one season.
