Emirates recruitment drive comes to Limerick (Irish Times)

The carrier is running a recruitment open day for both men and women this Saturday in the Limerick Strand Hotel, with the intention of filling jobs that involve living in Dubai.

“Irish candidates tend to do very well and there are nearly 500 Irish people working for Emirates in Dubai and this number is growing year-on-year.”

Not sure if posed but interesting view as to why SNN-LHR was scrapped in 2007. He believes giving Ryanair a deal was part of the problem. Shannon Airport refusing to comment speaks volumes!

It is rather strange that Shannon Airport would not make a comment. Can anyone verify if this account is accurate?

Now, shannon is under a new management. Would they have not at least said "New management are now in charge of shannon, we cannot comment on the previous management" or something like that?

The new management can't possible comment on the past management, which was pretty much the government. If Shannon airport was giving favorable rates to other airlines, then so was Cork and Dublin

Heavy winds at Shannon this evening have caused 2 go-arounds. The two ryanair planes that have gone around are now holding near Shannon for winds to improve.

    Flights holding:
    FR109STN-SNN. Update: Diverting to DUB
    FR2312SXF-SNN.

Maybe you're right, but that's not how it was described at the time

<...> Ryanair <...> has negotiated a new landing fees deal with the Shannon Airport Authority and will begin services to new destinations next year to Britain and European bringing an additional two million passengers through the facility.

Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary and Shannon chairman Pat Shanahan will hold a press conference this morning. <...>

Ryanair has been looking for a cheap landing charge deal at an Irish airport for some years and the coup by Shannon will be a blow for Dublin Airport.

Ryanair has said it will not launch any new routes from Dublin unless it gets a second independent terminal at Dublin and cheaper landing fees.
    http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/new-era-will-create-2000-extra-jobs-says-ryanair-25881954.html

Mr O'Leary <...> said the establishment of a Ryanair base at Shannon would revolutionise the growth of the airport and he paid tribute to the "vision and tenacity" of the new Shannon Aiport Authority for the role it had played.

"In less than two months since its appointment, the board of Shannon has won this biggest ever single investment in Irish tourism, despite intense competition from seven other low-cost European airports."

Shannon to New York JFK with Aer Lingus appears to be going year-round from January 2016. Its bookable for weeks after the typical 5th January cut off.

If SNN-JFK is going year round, its great news as Shannon still struggles quite a bit in the winter season

Edit : Boston also stays daily for W15/16.

Yep, today Jfk ends on the 3rd of January. Boston also goes down to 6x weekly.

IAG deal would boost passenger numbers, Aer Lingus head says (Irish Times)

Incoming chief executive Stephen Kavanagh says sale would benefit Heathrow routes

    Selling our seats

“We are confident that all of the Aer Lingus network will be positively impacted because there will be more people selling our seats, and there will be more customers viewing what we have for sale.”

Last year the number of people that flew between Shannon and Heathrow fell by 22,000 to 233,000.

Mr Kavanagh said this was as a result of Aer Lingus’s own decision to launch two daily transatlantic services from the Co Clare airport. Most of the traffic from there to the London hub was destined for North America, so some passengers simply switched to the direct service.

He said the London route could be opened up to a bigger market if Aer Lingus were to become part of IAG as British Airways, the group’s US partner American Airlines and members of the broader Oneworld Alliance would all sell Shannon-Heathrow.

    ************************************************************

That’s a positive way of looking at it!

But could the drop reflect the 17% reduction of in seat capacity plus the late time of the morning departure?

Mr Kavanagh seems to be a bit of an eejit. Heathrow numbers have fell the past few years, especially since

*The 17% reduction in capacity by using an A319.

*The cheapest fare to Heathrow is not less than €130 whereas you can get return to Stansted for €20.

*Ryanair has increased capacity to Stansted.

*Heathrow is not suitable for business passengers with the 8:50 departure.

The increase of the T/A services would of had little or no Impact on the Heathrow figures. Their was always daily services to New York with united and in the summer delta, and Aer Lingus always had the T/A services, just not at daily.

Mr Kavanagh is coming across as the type of fella with the attitude of "why fix something that's not broke?". That doesn't work in the fast evolving world of Air Travel. At least he supports the takeover.

Willie Walsh on the other hand, has acknowledged most of the facts above.

The taxes and charges for LHR are huge hence the price. Stansted is not great for Central London if you ask me particularly if going south of the river or are in a hurry!

I understand why LHR is so expensive, but with the service EI offer and the timing of the flights they are bound to lose traffic. Its only really useful for Transferring passengers. If EI *return the earlier flight or *return the A320 to the route, I'd imagine some of the passengers lost will return.

Group elected to support Shannon Airport (Limerick Leader)

IRELAND’S first ever community support group for an airport has been established for Shannon, in a show of further proof of the enormous goodwill for the Mid-West’s Airport.

The Friends Of Shannon Airport, a voluntary group, has lift-off following a recent meeting that saw it elect officials.

It will now embark on establishing a programme of activity aimed at supporting the airport as it continues on the growth path it set off on two years ago when it achieved independence.

So far, members of the public from Clare, Limerick, Galway, Tipperary and Cork have expressed interest in getting involved in the group, illustrating the deep level of support that exists in the Shannon catchment area for the airport.

Shannon Group chief executive, Neil Pakey, said that the enthusiasm of members and the sense of volunteerism was encouraging for all involved with the airport.

“There is a really strong sense of community around Shannon Airport and a sense of belonging that stretches far and wide, up the west coast, deep into the midlands and south to Cork and Kerry. It’s very encouraging that this initiative has been met with such strong pledges of support and we look forward to a long and enjoyable journey with everyone involved.”

A similar group exists in Liverpool.

    ************************************************************

It would be great to see a book published by them covering the aviation at Shannon Airport.

US military plane in Shannon emergency (Clare Herald)

A US military aircraft made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport in the early hours of this morning (28.02.2015).

The crew of the Hercules C-130 turbo-prop plane told air traffic controllers that they had a problem with one of their engines.

Shannon’s emergency plan was put into place while three units of the fire brigade from Shannon along with ambulances from Ennis and Limerick were sent to the airport.

Additional fire crews from Ennis were mobilised to a designated holding point adjacent to the M18 motorway at Latoon in case they were required.

The aircraft landed safely shortly before 1.00am.

Last August, another US C-130 aircraft made an emergency landing at Shannon after the crew reported a fuel leak over the Atlantic. The flight landed safely.

I see six aircraft (5 Aer Lingus and 1 Ryanair) were diverted to Shannon today, due to snow clearance work at Dublin Airport.

I see six aircraft (5 Aer Lingus and 1 Ryanair) were diverted to Shannon today, due to snow clearance work at Dublin Airport.

    They did.

    EI661 from Vienna
    EI363 from Warsaw
    EI363 from Paris (CDG)
    EI159 from London (LHR)
    EI433 from Milan (LIN)
    FR7045 from Malaga

Shannon was "Full" according to DUB atc after these diversions. The last time we got diversons in Shannon, after DUB atc said Shannon was full, 2 more aircraft demanded Shannon and got Shannon.

Aer Lingus will be restarting their New York (JFK) service on the 15th of March.

I wonder how many community groups will be travelling for St. Patrick’s Day.

Probably this one. That type of military aircraft would regularly refuel at Shannon.

According to its registration number that particular aircraft would be based in Stuttgart, Germany.

Sometimes you can track them on Flightradar24.

I think the location in that link was where the photo was taken, however I saw another Hercules source and they named Ramstein as its airbase.

It seems that there were two of them that refuelled with an orange stripe yesterday (93-7311) (92-1535).
