From what I heard it was just cancelled due to lack of load. New York JFK with Aer Lingus has been going out near full everyday though!

Low-cost airline granted licence for Ireland-US flights (Irish Times)

US authorities have granted a licence to Irish-based low-cost Norwegian Air International, paving the way for direct flights from Cork and Shannon to Boston.

Norwegian Air has been given permission to fly up to four times a week between Cork and Boston from next summer and there are hopes it could also have a direct connection to New York.

The decision paves the way for a major shake-up of transatlantic air travel, introducing the first Irish low-cost routes between Europe and the US.

Norwegian has been seeking a foreign carrier’s permit from Washington’s Department of Transportation for more than two years to support the launch of low-cost flights from Europe to the US.

Late last night the US department said that it would grant Norwegian the permit, which would allow the airline to launch proposed services from Cork and Shannon airports to Boston.

The US department’s delay in issuing the permit held up the launch of the services, which were originally scheduled to begin last April.

    Interesting times ahead.

    Interesting times ahead.

Now Cork has 2 airlines competing on the USA routes.... Well that's not what they were looking for I am sure.

Really hope this long haul Ryanair doesn't come to Shannon. I cannot see why Shannon are intent on pissing off the high spending business sector in vain hopes of attracting a few extra piss heads.

    What?

Cork doesn't have any transatlantic routes?

If Wow Air had not come on the scene, Norwegian might be able to get off to a stronger start there. Instead, both the KEF and Norwegian services are likely to have be stodgy performers. They are both classed as the super budget type carrier (leaving Wow's pricing structures for another day), so they will effectively share the same market between them.

Overview of services available next summer

    USA

Boston:All summer, daily, departure time changes from 11:40 to 12:00 from 26th March. Currently scheduled 757-200, but likely to change to an Omni 767-200 for the peak summer (June-August) as it has done the last 2 years.

    American Airlines

    Philadelphia: Operates 6th May-30th September, daily, 757-200.

    Delta

    New York: Resumes 5th May
    5th May-25th May, 5x weekly (No WED/THURS) 757-200
    25th May-31st October, daily, 767-300

    14th June-15th August: Daily 757-200
    18th August-11th September: 5x weekly (No WED/THURS) 757-200
First year in quite a while that there has been no expansion in US services, although an announcement from Norwegian regarding New York/Boston is possible, but if that happens it would likely in my opinion result in the loss of both Aer Lingus services.

I wouldn't be saying unfortunately, wouldn't take much to help Aer Lingus permanently end their operations.

Seems it won't be BOS/JFK, but infact Stewart for NY and TF green (Rhode Island, yes the one the Taoiseach said should have a link to Shannon) for Boston.

On PPRuNe it mentions that the routes will be Dublin, Shannon, Cork, Manchester and Edinburgh.

It will be interesting to see if Aer Lingus respond to those routes, it's still a possibility.

They will respond but if losses mount they will leave. Do think they could be alright for a time.

Suppose the question is whether the Norwegian services will last. Shannon will benefit from a large inbound tourism market, but just how many people with NYC or Boston as their origin/destination will be willing to travel over an hour to get to the airport on the US side.

Story changes so much you'd never know!
Reading PPRuNe it seems pretty certain but with how the whole Norwegian saga has gone so far it can't be believed until the first flight takes off!

Does anyone know if there's a petition started to get more flights from Shannon to EU (France, Belgium, Germany Switzerland for example).
I live in Brussels at the moment but am originally from Shannon and find it such a pity to go through (packed) dublin airport every time I want to go home. I know that a lot of international friends here would also be interested in flying directly to the west of Ireland but of course, no direct flights are available.
I've tried emailing Shannon Airport, Tourism Ireland and TDs involved in the Limerick 2030 intiative (Patrick O Donovan) to see if there's any inititive there to get more flights into Shannon but so far, no replies. Very frustrating that Shannon airport isn't fulfilling its potential. If anyone has any info please let me know, thanks.

Why do you think Shannon has the market for a route to Brussels? Shannon couldn't keep Nice, Poitiers, Paris, Memmingen and several other routes historically.

Cork had a route to Brussels again which it could not keep.

IIRC Shannon once had a route to Charleroi, which didn't do very well.

Well it now has Frankfurt and Stockholm on the roster....

Failed routes quoted are more to do with Ryanair tactics rather than the route not performing

I'd agree with the Ryanair tactics (such as what looks like an attempt to kill Berlin and Krakow now), but considering Aer Lingus couldn't maintain Brussels from Cork is another point against the Brussels route.
