not a bargain alert per se, but it might save you some money if you planned to cancel or downgrade - from today's email:

"Changes to your monthly subscription charges from March

The change to the price of your UPC services, which is listed below, will be reflected in your bills from March 2014. [...]

Our services represent excellent value, however you do have the right to cancel or downgrade your service within 30 days of receipt of this notice without penalty if you choose not to accept these changes."

    What are the changes?

What are the subscription charges going up to now? I haven't seen the email.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,355 ✭✭✭cruhoortwunk

I was quoted an extra €6.50 on top of my usual €36 for broadband only. They let me off with €3.50 as I'm registered on MyUPC for paperless billing-wahoo!!

I'm ringing to end my contract anyway, I'll at least see if they will budge on it.

Everybody who can read a contract that they sign. Every customer will get an email/letter to notify of price changes also.

also, contracts are done over the phone now, so you don't sign anything

There are enough threads on boards.ie relating to this already. Not a BA, but that doesn't seem to matter.

UPC price increase??, Change to your subscription: Your price change €6.51 Inc. VAT per month, UPC Price Increase to mention but three.

    Never signed a contract.

    Never received email.

    UPC Customer, for years.

Thanks op, didn't realise this. Great bargain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23 pmulv

I also got the 200 charge for the change and decided not to.
So it looks like I can cancel but can I cancel straight away?
In other words, do I still have to give 30 days notice? Anyone know?

    Thanks for the bargain op.

It's a bargain for people wishing to break their contract and not everyone visits the UPC forum, so I appreciate the OP posted it here.

yes, from what they told me over the phone it still is 30 days notice as price change from March 1st

You signed a contract over the phone. I did it with UPC before, and magnet. They outline that you agree to x, y and z, and you reply "Yes". This constitutes a contract, and is not just a verbal agreement.

Should you ever get into legal dispute with the organisation they can pull the file of the call where it would clearly outline your agreement to x,y and z which is contractually binding.

i'm paying 36 euro a month for 30 mb it now goes up by 6.50, so it will be 42.50

now I see they are offering 50 Mb for new customers

    50Mb Broadband
    Home Phone with Freetime World

for 25 euros for first 6 months and then 37 euros thereafter

Unbelievable companies who treat existing customers so badly.

here is the letter from them

Over the past 12 months, UPC has introduced superb new products to bring the best digital experience to our customers including Fibre Powered Horizon TV, superfast broadband and phone services. Through our network investments to date and our ongoing investments in programming, content and technology, we are focused on delivering quality and value for money to all of our customers.
Due to increases in overall programming and operating costs, we will need to increase your monthly subscription. We are aware that any price adjustment is unwelcome so we have ensured that the increase is kept to the minimum possible. Details of this price change are outlined below.

Changes to your monthly subscription charges from March
The change to the price of your UPC services, which is listed below, will be reflected in your bills from March 2014.

    Change to your subscription

    Your price change

    €6.50 Inc. VAT per month

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,500 ✭✭✭✭cson

I called there to explore my options. Long story short; I got put through to the Loyalty Dept and signed up to a new 12 month contract @ €55 p/m for TV, Unlimited Internet and the mystery phone that we never use.

The increase (was going from €66 to €70) precipitated my call so ironically if they'd left it, they'd be getting more money out of me for the next 12 months.

Worth a try for anyone hit with the increase.

Been with UPC for 2.5yrs in case anyone is wondering.

is there any advantage of this to my situation?

joined UPC back in august on the 6months at 50€ and then up to normal price for next 6 months. it's for tv,bb (100mb and unlimited downloads) and phone.

Cancel and get a housemate to sign up for another half price offer?

Am I right in thinking they are announcing this now, but not putting the prices up for more than 30 days in the hope that by the time the majority of people are billed for the change the 30 days have already lapsed?

Music to my ears anyway. Have had nothing but hassle since I switched to horizon.

I've had neither for the last few series of price increases, since I went paperless. Perhaps in UPCSpeak, paperless means "cutting off all contact". They do have my email address as I have gotten other emails from them on it.

I changed from the 30mb to this last week as my basic BB and phone was €52 which brought it down to €37 for the 50mb package so maybe ring them to change

I would love Sky but I can't move because of a stupid clause with apartments and satellite dishes!!! hate the way UPC have the monopoly :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 673 ✭✭✭GekkePrutser

I didn't get one either (am on 30mbit broadband with nothing else on the side). I don't think customers who aren't affectd (and thus don't get an email) can take advantage of the 30-day thing.

I really hate their policy of requiring a new 12-month contract for any minor change though. I'd be on the fastest broadband I could get if I could just switch without changing the contract :( I'm happy with their service, but times are too uncertain now to lock myself into anything. Their loss, I guess, as I'd spend a lot more money with them if I could.

Does anyone ever check the speed of their broadband? I'm on the 50mb line but using speedtest, my download speed is only about 23mb.

You need to check with something connected via lan lead to the router/modem. Otherwise with wifi your lower rate could be due to local interference.

Try changing the server when you are doing the test. It usually defaults to the fastest ping time which doesn't always mean the correct server. For example, I'm in Limerick but I get a more accurate reflection of my speed by selecting the Dublin Vodafone server.

Edit: And of course what Dravokivich is correct too. Being on Wifi can be a major influence the result you get.

Indeed. Sitting next to the router, my phone speedtests at 30 meg.

My laptop connected via a LAN cable speedtests at 150 Meg speed.

Just got the email a few minutes ago. Thanks to the deal we have with them, our bill has increased from €0.00 per month to 87c per month

I think we might be able to manage that ;)

ballooba, I was going to change from my current service to the Fibre 50 Chat. They told me that it was not going up in price, they even sent me a message to confirm that the price would still be 37 after 1st March. Do you mean that the 3.50 charge is being added which then drops off when you sign up to myupc or do you mean the actual bundle price of 37 is going up as well as the 3.50?

I'm the same, nowhere near the advertised speeds. I was on 150MB and the speed was crap. Downgraded to 120MB as I thought I shouldn't pay for something I don't use to the full capacity and was still getting the same speed. A quick call to their CS and I was informed that because I still use XP, won't be able to get higher speeds than 100MB - that was a shock for me. So if you're like me still using XP, you'll never get near 200MB.

Thanks to their increase in price, I think it's time to downgrade again to 50MB as I recon it's more than enough, at least until I decide to install a newer OS.

Got an email here too with a €6 increase. Have been out of contract since November. I don't want to cancel as the broadband is pretty much in a league of it's own and I'm not going back to DSL but if I was to ring customer service and tell them I want to cancel are they likely to offer me a decent discount to stay on? currently paying around €90 a month for 100mb broadband, free anytime calls and the lowest TV bundle with horizon.

Without having to threaten to leave, I'm sure you can get Horizon Max bundle for €80, so 200mb broadband and some extra channels. You might be able to do better that that if you are leaving.

Got email today too. Had entered into a new cheaper contract last July they told me at the time over the phone was guaranteed for 12 months
I have Digital max tv with 1 recording box and 2 points with basic boxes in other rooms/phone with anytime world calls and supposed to have 50mb broadband but never get that speed and my increase is below. Already doing direct debit and paperless billing.

Change to your subscription Your price change €11.50 Inc. VAT per month
New Self-serve Discount Total Change spacer.gif-€3.50 Inc. VAT per month
Total Change €8.00 Inc. VAT per Month spacer.gifspacer.gif

spacer.gifWonder if I ring them up threaten to cancel will they reduce the price. Would consider Sky but want the tv points in the 2 other rooms and don't know anyone who has the full package with Sky.
Think I may go look around now and see can I get better deal elsewhere.
