Go up to the Corrigan ward in Beaumont hospital and talk to any of the patients there,. Many of whom are there because of the effects of smoking,It is a real eye opener.. E-cigs didnt work for me to be honest but I have heard that they have worked for other people.

Off the cigs 1 day went cold turkey. I just stopped after watchin a documentry on youtube and was so shocked. I ve been smoking for 12 yr and I never knew there was 4000 chemicals in cigs.

So what I did was while I was smoking and enjoyin cigs I went on to youtube and watched the graphic videos and read every article on the internet and in 2 days I went from craving a cig to the sight of them making me sick. Now cig remind me of tar filled lungs where just 2 days ago i was craving them.

Another thing I did was filled and clear blue plastic bottle of water and used it as an ashtray and throw ur cig butts in and closed it. The water turned black and while I was having a cig I wud smell d cigs in the bottle. The smell was so bad i nearly puked.

The best thing is to change ur perception of cigs from cravings to them making u sick.
The hardest part of quittin is d 1st few hours wen you say no to cravings after that its easy. Good luck

I did indeed got really bad side affects, bought my e cig 2 day really didn't like it all going give cold turkey a go again 2 Moro

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 594 ✭✭✭The_Pretender

Don't buy an E-Cig from your local supermarket, it's cheap rubbish.

Invest in something decent such as:

    http://www.e-smokeireland.eu/product-p/kangtwist.htm

For less than 6 days worth of cigarettes you can get yourself one of these. Worlds different to the things you likely tried. It tastes good, and you can adjust your nicotine hit.

My best advice is re read the Allen Carr book cover to cover again.

I quit in October after 20yrs but went straight onto VIP ecig but I didn't like idea of still being addicted to something.
So came off the e cig new years day and re reading the Allen Carr book and it's helping loads.

Thank you all so much for you replying to me so it's being 13 hours since my last smoke :) and not much sleep in that 13 hours bout 4 hours I think.. and it has being tough first thing this morning with my cup of tea but I just kept drinking cold water and few puffs of my e cig and lots of cleaning !!! Feeling positive but Still having a slight doubt in the back of my mind about days to come!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,108 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

Stick with it! The trick I found is to recognise when you are having a craving and then do something to take your mind off it. The cravings will start to get less and less after 3 days or so.

I strongly recommend getting a proper e-cig such at the one suggested by The_Pretender. The ones you buy in shops and chemists are awful, but if you get a proper one you will actually prefer it to smoking and have no cravings for cigarettes.

You will still be addicted to nicotine, but it's far cheaper, doesn't smell, can be done indoors and you will feel the difference in your body very quickly. I'm not going to tell you they're harmless (they might be, they might not be), but they won't do anything like the damage the cigarettes are doing to you and you'll save a fortune.

You can also gradually cut down on the nicotine content of the liquid you put into it. If you're serious about it and can't find the will power to go cold turkey (don't blame you, it's hard!), it's the easiest way you're going to find to bin the cigarettes immediately.

I'm still doin ok! Cannot believe it I'm so surprised but know it's one day at a time I'm still doing d cold Turkey thing well with a few puffs of e cig I'm hoping things don't change 2 Moro because it's my daughter 2 nd birthday party and all my smoking friends and family are coming to my house.. Will defo be buying a eco cigs if the what i'm doing now isn't working by weekend no way do I ever want to smoke again!! Thanks you all so much again for the reply and support

The hardest part of quitting is at the start after that it gets easier. I didnt sleep at all either. 3 days now I am without a single puff of anything.

Did you do the cold turkey thing?? I googled alot and says cravings peak really high at day 3 but you seem to be ok??

Ya went cold turkey. I stayed awake for 10hrs saying no to the cravings and when I woke up next day the cravings all but nearly disappeared. After that I had headaches and very drowsy feeling thats it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,280 ✭✭✭shamrock55

Its funny cos i find when i give up the cigs ( alot of times unfortunatly) i find the first few days or weeks the easiest its when i get to wk 4 or 5 that i really struggle, or the first time i have a beer after quitting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 jda

I'm worrying a bit too much about to Moro cos honestly cravings aren't as bad as I thought so hopefully I'll b like you doing great :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 jda

Ah God no!! Week 4 or 5 go back on them what a waste you must think!! if i'm lucky to get that far I will defo refuse to smoke and I don't drink only birthdays or friends birthday so prob every 3 ta 4 months I would have few drinks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 357 ✭✭Bored Accountant

I read the Allen Carr book before and it it didn't work for me.
Went to one of the Allen Carr seminars last weekend and i'm feeling much happier now that I'm off them.

They have something like a 94% success rate it. If you slip back on or feel like you are going to slip you can 2/3 back up sessions in the first 3 months, and if you still haven't managed to stay off after 3 months they'll give you your money back.

€320 might seem like a lot up front (cheaper if you have aviva health ins) but the amount I would spend on 2 months smoking paid for it.

    Well worth a try.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 jda

Wow 320 euro that's a lot but same as myself I spend 70 quid a week smoking so maybe it is worth it., for now I'm taking one day at a time.. It's great to c from this how many people do quit coming on here reading every ones post is really keeping me going !!

    Try champix

My bro went off them for 9months. He ended up going out for a few drinks and ended up back on them again. 1 slip up and your back on them.

Quitting is extremely hard for the first two months.

    Then it's less hard.

There's no easy bit to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 jda

2 months o holy Jesus ha ha that seems for ever. Think the drink thing will b ok cos as said before not much of a drinker! I've seen from a few post people say buy your self something nice from money saved well every one in my House is always so busy so I would instead like a family day out with a nice posh meal lol I would really love to hear from people or any body that's knows some one who did it and is still an ex smoker thanks

I'm not actually trying to be nagging or anything, but you really should try a proper e-cig. If you find the cheap ones help you a bit, then you should have no problem at all quitting with a decent e-cig. Honestly just trying to help you out, it's tough! :)

Well done, thats the hardest part is done. From here on out it gets a little bit easier every day! Also if you have a smartphone get yourself a quit smoking app! Great for giving you stats about how much you've saved and how your health is improving :)

Hey jda well done, its such a struggle at the start. Have you tried patches at all??.
I used them and found them fantastic, would never have done it without them. I didn't want to use the e-cigs as I wanted nicotine out of my system but I also wanted to break the physical habit.
If you have a medical card you can get them on prescription but even if you have to buy them they are still cheaper than buying 20 a day. I know that the patches have nicotine in them but the dosage diminishes all the time .

4th attempt to quit in 2 years. Longest I’ve been off them is 4 months. Doctor told me before I quit at the 1st attempt is to recognise the triggers that gave me the urge to smoke and avoid them those triggers, and that it was just a habit anyway. I smoked because I enjoyed the feeling...if I experienced a good moment, I sort of celebrated with a smoke...if it was a bad moment, I depended on a smoke, and I just smoked in between anyway. Tomorrow, at 12.30pm will be the beginning of Day 7 of attempt #4. On the patches again. Work ok but each time I finished the programme with the 3 previous attempts, I was back on the fags eventually.

Hi JDA, I have been on and off them for a while and am sick of them now. Here is a tip for you or anyone still smoking. Get a white cloth, sock, tissue paper, etc. When you light up a fag, and take a drag put your mouth over the cloth and blow the smoke out. See what happens and do this for a day and see if you still want to smoke when you see what comes out onto the cloth. The brown patch to me represents all those nightclub smoking areas , what my clothes must at least sometimes look like , what other people are breathing in from my second hand smoke , what my lungs look like, the list goes on......

    Hi,

I have just turned 38 and smoked for around 19 years, giving them up for may reasons. I am going cold turkey as I don't believe in the patches etc. as the nicotine is going into the body still. You can do it to. If we get enough people to encourage us. we will be fine and smoke free. Go on give it a try again I am now off them 13 days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,276 ✭✭✭readyletsgo

Gonna add my name to this list too.

Smoking about 15 years and tomorrow (tuesday 14th Jan) I quit for good this time, I have done it before, and always break a few months after in a bar with a drink, but each time its very hard to get throught the first few days, or it might be a walk in the park. I'm gonna use the Niquitin Tabs again.

    Best of luck to everyone!

    Over the Years I've tried:
    1) Nicotine Gum ( horrible and didnt work)
    2) Patches (again didnt work for me)
    3) Cold Turkey ( fell out with just about everyone I met!)
    4) Champix ( side affects were crippling)
    5) Ego Vaporizer (Electric Cig)( Off the fags now for 5 months)

Like most people, I had to try a few different methods and fail miserably until I found something that suited me.
Also, as mentioned already, I now find I dont want a cig because my vapor tastes so much better.

Good Luck and remember the trick is to keep trying until you eventually find what works for you.

Off the smokes since last Monday.
Amazing how much better I feel- Sleep, less anxiety, clear airways, sense of smell and instead of wanting to give up in training I want to keep going.

First few days were tough, tingling, sweats, serious cravings but doing ok now.
Just bring a bottle of water and mixed nuts into work.
I also write out little lists of the positive changes since I've given up and have them at my desk for a day.
I've been around mates who smoke and while it's tough I also feel proud when I decline the temptation.
Can't get complacent though, just gotta keep at it.
    Good luck everyone.
