Phillys licence to roam was likely of his own making (I suppose it's understandable given Westmeath's lack of an attacking gameplan), but the defensive structure from here on out has been emphasised to all, but most particulalry to the defensive line players.

He seems to fancy himself for a couple of points a game, a bit like lacey. As discussed he has more football in him then he's credited with, but he over does the outside of the boot passes sometimes they skim off and go straight to the opposition, but they work sometimes too.

Cooper use to pop up for a score or two but hes stopped that now he was at it in the league a lot last year but stopped for championship matches.

There is a lot of talk between the defenders alright.

    Hidey ho campers !

So todays the day then....the first knock out game of the year. The first day of the year when the butterflies in the tummy try to make their presence felt, only to be told to shag off, it's "only" Fermanagh. Still wasn't able to face the fry for breakfast though...

Safe travels to everyone heading in. Pack yer brollies, roar really loudly for Kildare, and oh yeah, avert your eyes when the ads for the hurling skills app comes on the big telly. You really don't need to see Danny all dressed up in a cape and eye shadow, looking like he's an extra in a Spandau Ballet video.

Heading in shortly myself. Wore my Arnotts Dublin jersey to the matches yesterday. It doesn't get out much these days. I never bought the Vodafone one, as I did not like the big red sport. I'll have my AIG one on today. There was a guy in a Fermanagh jersey 5 seats away from me, so I wasn't the only one that looked like a spy there. :) Of course it was a pointless in him being on a spying mission, so maybe he was just there to enjoy the games. ;) It still won't prepare him for what awaits him today. It will be a very different atmosphere. There'll be a lot more blue jerseys around too. See you all later. Up the Dubs.:D

On a day were Dublin win an All-Ireland Quarter Final I never thought I'd enjoy watching Kerry beat Kildare more!

Enjoyed the game. Fermanagh were great , a real eye opener.

Donegal, Mayo and Kerry won't fear us now.

Thought fermanagh fans were great and the sportsmanship at the end was good too. Watched it when I went home a d the banter beteen McGrath and Gavin seemed genuine.

    We've a lot to do.

My view of that "push-over try":

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,952 ✭✭✭✭Stoner

I've decided I'm not going to talk about the ref. The game is won now and we have lots of issues to talk about relating to the team and the next game. I'm going to be positive.

Thankfully fermanagh gave it a real go. When bastic / Kilkenny and Cooper went off there was little shape.

KMc is seriously off the pace of the rest of the team, A Brogan was hungry and inaccurate.

Fenton while effective has to bring it up a level, he needs to catch more ball, lots of the ball he broke went to the opposition.

Bastic was very good imho and he held our shape.

Cooper played well and was missed when he went off. Andrews showed well. Forward interplay was poor in many cases.

How did Flynn play from the stands?

He kicked an absolute screamer from section 332 of the Lower Hogan, (row AA, seat 22 if yer being fussy,) but he did most of his best stuff on the actual pitch. :D

Sick as a dog with the flu. Off to bed. More thoughts tomorrow. Just hope to God I don't have Calpol inspired HD nightmares of Colm Cooper and Darran O'Sullivan running riot against us. Having to watch the non HD version against Kildare was bad enough. :(

Gavins thing of throwing the bench on while we're on top is a bit of a worry

MDMA seemed to be anonymous again to me. Bastick impressed.

Is McMennamin missing having O'Gara around to mix it up with the defence?

Think the lack of competitive games is going to scupper this team next time out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,952 ✭✭✭✭Stoner

Imo He was ok. Got into it more as the game went on. He didn't pickup as much breaking ball as we've seen him before imho. So from kickouts his positioning has been better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

Yeah seemed a bit quiet, though the better the opposition the better the man.

MDM didnt impress when i came on either, cant see him starting the next day. Bastic very good, but Fenton needs to up it a bit and make his presence felt a bit more.

Watching Kerry's midfield worries me a bit has to be said, I'm still not sure about ours.

    @Conmort

People who think Paul Flynn is not playing well because he is not scoring 2-3 points a game should not be watching sport.does some work#

I agree. He is a work horse. Scored a goal and a couple of points today. Some excellent foot passes too.

Flynn's work around the middle is great, his all round contribution across the field is exceptional. Wins breaking balls, tackles, carries, great kickpasser..he has so much more to his game.

I think the best or maybe for us the most important part of his play is compensating for our midfield. That means either showing for kickouts or winning breaking ball.

He didn't win as much breaking ball as usual. I don't mind him not kicking points. Tbh I think Fenton could throw him a bone and try to direct more of his breakdowns in his direction.

    They could work on that.

Today Fenton showed a little bit of lack of confidence or self belief for the first time. He seemed to be happy to simply prevent his man winning clean ball at the expense of winning clean ball himself. This might be necessary against Gallagher or AOS, but not today imho.

What did you guys think of Kilkenny? I thought he was a ittke better than the pundits suggested.

Don't care what Conor Mortimor says he's not been the same player so far this year. The boys a marvel and has been for a long time now but this year he's been giving the ball away, skying shots, not winning primary possession and not working as hard as is his norm (nowhere near McCaffrey for example).

Mind you he's not helped by the fact that when we've played against the blanket defences this year he's been asked to hug the right touchline. Hard for him to really influence proceedings from there, but still.

Faith has me believing himself and MDM will up it when required. Its not blind faith either but so far...no its not been business as usual with Flynn.

BTW On the kickouts? Seems to me Dublin are not showing their hand when it comes to the kickouts. Historically, we've been the best in the business at working the space for Cluxton (think Mayo 2013). So far we've done none of that but you'd be naive to believe Dublin have just stopped working on their kickouts. They know the likes of Kerry study it to the nth degree. Flynn, MDM and Connolly will come into their own then.

Watching Kerry's midfield worries me a bit has to be said, I'm still not sure about ours.

In fairness they've always had a great midfield and we havent for a while.

I hoped Brady got a run, hes been good this year. Kerry have three class options at midfield, imho MDMA is our only one and it needs to be his day.

What's all the talk of Kerry. We have to get past the semi which will not happen with a performance shown today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,952 ✭✭✭✭Stoner

I was just talking about what was on view today and comparing us to it. Nothing to do with the next match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

What's the general rule of thumb if I wanted to get back playing football? Parish and catchment areas etc etc
There's plenty of clubs around me.

Not sure of my level, as I've not played GAA in years so I think I'll start at the bottom and take it from there!

(Hopefully make the senior squad next year all going to plan lol)

Tickets are available already. Not the best of seats though from a quick browse.

Yesterday's no show performance by Dublin would not be good enough to beat Kerry. Kerry are laughing at the moment but no All Irelands are won in QF stage. Need to improve big time for next game. Just my opinion.

Fair point. A lot was shown up to work on over the next four weeks.

I dont know if Kerry are really laughing tbh. I don't think they like being favourites. Certainly Dublin are worried. But mayo are sitting back.

But maybe it's Donegal or Mayo that benifit most from yesterday. If we are that bad Kerry won't get to see it, they had a huge advantage having Donegal , Mayo and Dublin on the other side of the draw, but essentially they only have to potentially play one of those teams so on the flip side it could be of little significance to Kerry as either Mayo or Donegal still look strong.
They are going to play the best of two or three good teams, its still just one game.
