How little I have left after I pay my bills, mortgage, fuel costs, insurance costs, pension, it's never ending. It's just infuriating to be left with so little after working so much.

    add sky to that!

I get that possibility, however are car accidents like you describe that common, which warrants mandatory insurance ? Should the burden not land on health insurance or even the taxpayer ?

We already have the MIBI, should that not just exclusively cover health related car injuries as opposed to vehicle damage aswell ?

I've had a near life ending motorcycle accident that wasn't my fault that even I admit was just one of those stupid things that wasn't really either party's fault. I had a decent settlement and trust me, a LOT of people thought I was a fool for accepting such a low figure. I see another poster on the thread that suffered horrific injuries from a car accident.

Dude, it happens every day and trust me, you're far better off making sure you have your bases covered without having to rely on the state. That's what the Kiwis told me about their system. 'You'd be a fool not to make sure you're fully insured' is what I was told time and time again.

For yourself you havehealth insurance Your property insurance covers these things if it happens on your premise (I think) aswell.

A person not having car insurance is incredibly wreckless and selfish. What happens if you crash into a car that is 60k in value?

What if you knock someone over on the road? Do you have enough in cash reserves to pay for their medical bills for life?

Should that not suffice, assuming that it is down to a genuine accident and not reckless or dangerous driving ?

That's actually another problem I have. You're essentially paying most of the time for the hypothetical in case someone's luxury get's damaged. I don't think everyone should be forced to legally pay an insurance premium on a commodity if they're expected to burden the costs of a 60k car they could never dram of affording themselves. I think it's too disproportionate.

The disgusting attitude of most politicians, top bankers and some employers. ALL these think people are there to be trampled on.
Al Qaeda and other terrorists who deliberately target civilians.
Unnecessary wars like the one in Iraq.
Burglars, and especially the ones who live next door to their victims and see their every move before they rob them.
Fox hunting and it being considered 'posh'.
Idiots who shoot pigeons, pheasants and anything else they can find and then try to convince people they are doing people a favour when it is themselves who should be shot.
The US Tea Party and other Neo-Nazi movements.
Insurance companies and their disgusting attitudes.

If you cause an accident, you are, or should be, liable.

Thinking it'll never happen to you is just stupid, and people who drive without insurance put the cost of all insurance up for the rest of us, who actually care about the possible consequences of our actions.

Well then I don't know why existing health insurance providers can't provide cover for medical problems arising from a car accident in that case.

Why should my health insurance premiums pay for the injuries you cause someone else?

I'm assuming since you feel car insurance is a waste of money that you rely on the public health system. You want to live in a world where someone else always picks up the tab for your mistakes.

    An increasingly popular position. Sadly.

 You could say the exact same about car insurance then. Why should I pay for Candie when he/she takes someone out of it at a junction ? Our health premiums are most likely already paying for unhealthy lifestyle choices which lead to cancer, cirrhosis of the liver etc. Are you angry about that ? And no as matter of fact, I'm on private health cover.

There will always be grey areas.

The higher premiums are based on the persons luxuries. If you say people should pay a premium how do you define the cut-off point? Why should people who never drive pay towards other peoples car tax? Why should a non -business owner pay for someone elses negligence if they do something dangerous in their shop?

I work outside of Ireland and pay taxes abroad. When I go home I drive my other car (which is insured). Why should the tax payer pay for my car when I don't even pay tax in the country?

    Huh?

I have car insurance, you're not going to pay for any of my mistakes.

If people hurt themselves, that's their issue. I'm responsible for myself and for people affected by my actions.

If I hurt someone with my car and I'm at fault, I'm responsible. My insurance means I can alleviate or ameliorate the situation. If I have no insurance I'm neglecting my legal and moral duty. It's really that simple.

That's what shared risk is all about. It's basic economics.

Today you might be the 20yr old pup hooning around and writing off your Civic. Tomorrow you might be the struggling student that has his car stolen from outside Tesco. Next week you could be the retired gent that was t-boned by a drunk solicitor. The week after that, you could be the idiot that takes his eyes off the road to change the radio station and roll into the back of a massive pileup.

You pay over the course of your lifetime so that everything eventually works out. Even insurance companies insure huge portions of their books with other companies, just in case they are the one that the music stops for at a point in time. That's why I don't believe in modelled insurance, load x, y and z person because if reason a, b or c. Everyone should pay the same over the course of their lives so that it all eventually balances. But that's a different row.

Well non-drivers aren't obliged to pay Motor tax, so I don't get that argument unless you mean extra money is being drained from the general purse for a shortfall in motor tax takings.

 Did you mean the rest of us paying for business owner's negligence in health and safety terms when someone get's injured in their shop? I honestly don't know about that one tbh.

Well they shouldn't, you should have to pay the relevant tax to drive a car here like everyone else I assume ? How does that correlate to insurance anyway ?

Do these things not generally drive up insurance across the board ? The more an insurance provider pays out, the more likely it hits every member with a policy ? Both car and health ? Maybe I'm not as clued in as I thought at first, the case may be.

Ah I don't know. Maybe a middle ground between Health and car cover could be found ? Health covers medical, car covers vehicle damage.

I'm kinda derailing this thread at this point.

Hope that clears your confusion. :)

My points are based on when you mentioned that the taxpayer could foot the bill.

You can't charge a proportionate health tax on peoples income for their cars unless they all drive the same car. Having premiums associated with a cars value as you previously suggested is no different to motor insurance.

Again, business insurance should not be a burden to everyone, only business owners. If this was covered by health insurance it would drive all non-business owners premiums up.

I meant insurance, not tax for my car (I pay both btw:)). Again, how could this be done through a national health levy. It would be fair to people paying tax (a healthy levy) in Ireland. How would you be able to rent cars to people who go on holiday?

Motor insurance is obligatory and rightfully so. You pay for what you drive, and to be fair its not 1000's (except your first 2/3 years. If you crash into someone you are liable, not the public or if someone hits your car and drives off, you are covered through insurance and won't have to pay the bill.

When you ring someone and leave them a missed call, and instead of ringing back they text
    "were you looking for me"

No you just have a magical missed call! I didn't really ring you.

And on the same note, when someone texts you "ring me" and you literally ring straight away and the mongos don't answer. Getting annoyed just thinking of that one!

When YouTube pages are loading and in that nano second where you quickly attempt to click on a video, adverts suddenly load in that very spot instead, pushing the videos lower and so you fcuking click on the ad instead!

Also, when you have a bunch of tabs open and an audio advert starts playing and you can't find the bastard tab that it is playing in! Arghhgghhh!!!

I'm coming out off 'T' junction, I look right I look left, I glance right as I pull out...... And a car that was going at a normal speed when I first looked and I knew I had plenty off time to exit 'T' is now apparently trying to stop me or even commit manslaughter(cause they certainly didn't plan it!!)..... Anyway that fills me with RAGE....

Indecision over places to eat. You pick a spot and go there. Absolutely fries me to see friends of mine thinking and then rethinking a choice of restaurant. I am by nature a patient man but god almighty that drives me mad.
